Does short termism affect the quality of urban design in the UK?
This paper follows the report on the âQuality of Urban Design: Study of the Influence of Private Property Decision Maker in Urban Designâ (RICS 1996). It focuses on one of the findings in the report, namely that decisions made in development, investment and occupation seemed overly influenced by short term considerations. In this paper, the authors review the Report and examine the concept of short termism as it affects urban design decisions. The paper concludes that although it is difficult to establish whether or not short termism exists in many decisions, there are grounds for believing that a priori short termism might particularly influence property orientated decisions. The paper ends with some implications for policy both at the economy and local level
CORPORATIONS-RIGHT OF HOSTILE STOCKHOLDER AND DIRECTOR TO EXAMINETHE BOOKS AND RECORDS OF CORPORATION
Plaintiff was a minority stockholder and director in Pascal Company. She sought to inspect the books and records of the corporation relating to marketing practices, sales and customers, but was prevented from doing so by the defendant, who is the president and majority stockholder of the corporation. Plaintiff thereupon brought an action for a writ of mandamus to compel the defendant to permit such inspection. The defense was that plaintiff had a scheme to interfere with, harass and sabotage the business by contacting distributors and customers, and by making information regarding the business available to competitors. The lower court dismissed the action with prejudice. On appeal, held, affirmed. Since the plaintiff\u27s purposes were hostile to the corporation, she had no right either as a stockholder or director to examine the books and records. State ex rel. Paschall v. A Low-Power Magnetic Torquer For Satellite Attitude Control
This paper analyzes a magnetic torquer for satellite attitude control which requires very little energy, or average power, to control its magnetic moment. The magnetic torquer consists of a solenoid with a hard magnetic-material core that has a large residual intensity of magnetization. Discharging capacitors through the solenoid winding generates current pulses to switch the polarity of the residual intensity of magnetization in order to control the magnetic moment of the magnetic torquer.
