    The Contribution of Sectoral Productivity Differentials to Inflation in Greee

    This paper estimates the magnitude of the Balassa-Samuelson effect for Greece. We calculate the effect directly, using sectoral national accounts data, which permits estimation of total factor productivity (TFP) growth in the tradeables and nontradeables sectors. Our results suggest that it is difficult to produce one estimate of the BS effect. Any particular estimate is contingent on the definition of the tradeables sector and the assumptions made about labour shares. Moreover, there is also evidence that the effect has been declining through time as Greek standards of living have caught up on those in the rest of the world and as the non-tradeables sector within Greece catches up with the tradeables.Balassa-Samuelson effect, inflation, productivity

    Cloud-native RStudio on Kubernetes for Hopsworks

    In order to fully benefit from cloud computing, services are designed following the "multi-tenant" architectural model, which is aimed at maximizing resource sharing among users. However, multi-tenancy introduces challenges of security, performance isolation, scaling, and customization. RStudio server is an open-source Integrated Development Environment (IDE) accessible over a web browser for the R programming language. We present the design and implementation of a multi-user distributed system on Hopsworks, a data-intensive AI platform, following the multi-tenant model that provides RStudio as Software as a Service (SaaS). We use the most popular cloud-native technologies: Docker and Kubernetes, to solve the problems of performance isolation, security, and scaling that are present in a multi-tenant environment. We further enable secure data sharing in RStudio server instances to provide data privacy and allow collaboration among RStudio users. We integrate our system with Apache Spark, which can scale and handle Big Data processing workloads. Also, we provide a UI where users can provide custom configurations and have full control of their own RStudio server instances. Our system was tested on a Google Cloud Platform cluster with four worker nodes, each with 30GB of RAM allocated to them. The tests on this cluster showed that 44 RStudio servers, each with 2GB of RAM, can be run concurrently. Our system can scale out to potentially support hundreds of concurrently running RStudio servers by adding more resources (CPUs and RAM) to the cluster or system.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Towards a fundamental astrometric reference system behind the Malleganic clouds : spectroscopic confirmation of new quasar candidates selected in the near-infrared

    Quasi-stellar objects (quasars) located behind nearby galaxies provide an excellent absolute reference system for astrometric studies, but they are difficult to identify because of fore- and background contamination. We have embarked on a programme to expand the quasar reference system behind the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, the Magellanic Bridge and Magellanic Stream. Hundreds of quasar candidates were selected, based on their near-infrared colours and variability properties from the ESO VISTA Magellanic Clouds (VMC) Public Survey. A subset of 49 objects was followed up with optical spectroscopy with FORS2. We confirmed the quasar nature of 37 objects (34 new identifications) that span a redshift range from z ~ 0.5 to 4.1
