Degradation, infection and heat effects on polypropylene mesh for pelvic implantation: what was known and when it was known
Many properties of polypropylene mesh that are causative in producing the complications that our patients are experiencing were published in the literature prior to the marketing of most currently used mesh configurations and mesh kits. These factors were not sufficiently taken into account prior to the sale of these products for use in patients. This report indicates when this information was available to both mesh kit manufacturers and the Food and Drug Administration

Final Technical Report for Award DE-FG02-05ER41389 A New Electrostatically-Focused, UV HPD for Liquid Xenon: A Direct Comparison with APD, PMT, SiPM in an Integrated Database
Within the scope of the project, a LXe detector and associated gas handling and purification system were set up to study the response of various photodetectors to the VUV Xe light. In particular we tested an Advanced Photonix Large Area Avalanche Photodiode (APD), Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) from two different sources and an Hamamtsu Photonics APD. As part of the XENON Dark Matter project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, we have accumulated independent knowledge of the response of compact metal channel photomultipliers. At this stage, we conclude that the last are far superior in terms of reliability and performance in a LXe detector environment. More studies are needed with APDs and SiPMs in LXe, taking advantage of the improved performance of these sensors with time. We could not test a hybrid PMT (HPD) since the only available unit on loan from one manufacturer lacked the mechanical stability and was packaged in a form not compatible with LXe purity requirements. Meanwhile, within the XENON collaboration, we are developing with Hamamatsu a hybrid PMT which is named QUPID (Quartz Photon Intensifying Detector) which promises to solve the problems of radioactivity and purity encountered with previous HPDs. We attach to this report two papers which summarize in detail the experimental st-ups, procedures and results obtained with different APDs and SiPMs operated in LXe. We continue our investigations of APDs in view of their potential appication in large arrays for LXe detectors. We intend to publish the results once we complete tests of newly acquired Hamamatsu APDs
Charm in the Nucleon
A next-to-leading order analysis of inelastic electroproduction of charm is
performed using an interpolating scheme which maps smoothly onto massless QCD
evolution at large Q^2 and photon-gluon fusion at small Q^2. In contrast with
earlier analyses, this scheme allows the inclusion of quark and target mass
effects and heavy quark thresholds, as well as possible non-perturbative, or
intrinsic, charm contributions. We find no conclusive evidence in favor of an
intrinsic charm component in the nucleon, although several data points which
disagree with perturbative QCD expectations will need to be checked by future
experiments.Comment: 23 pages, 9 figure
Animals in the Religions and Mythology of Ancient Peoples (Part 3)
In the third part of this study, the following animals are described as deities, mythical beings or monsters: monkeys, bears, hippopotami, rams, dogs, spiders, birds and fish. Most often, birds are worshipped either in their original form or depicted with the body parts of humans and different animals (hybrids), followed by fish, dogs and bears. According to their characteristics, these animals were symbols of strength, longevity (monkeys), courage (bear), pregnancy and motherhood (hippo), strength and masculinity (ram), vigilance and fidelity (dog), and finally, the correlation of life and death (fish)
Low-temperature electrical discharge through solid xenon
The uniform self-sustained electrical discharge through solid xenon has been realized and studied. The
multiplication of electrons proceeds in the noble gas above the xenon crystal interface whereas a positive
feedback is realized at the account of multiple exciton formation by excess electrons drifted through the
crystal: molecular excitons emit VUV photons which knocked out secondary electrons from photosensitive
cathode. The discharge was stimulated by short electrical spark along the sample axes. The discharge electrical
properties as well as the spectra of solid xenon electroluminescence in UV and visible have been studied.
Electric discharge in solid xenon was proved to be an effective source of UV radiation and a convenient tool
to study the processes involving excitons and electrons in solid xenon at high pressures
