Institutionalizing alternative economic spaces? An interpretivist perspective on diverse economies

    Get PDF
This article offers an approach that helps geographers and others to carefully and critically reexamine prospects for diverse economies. We propose an interpretative institutionalist perspective is useful for elucidating overlooked opportunities for creating alternative economic visions and practices by revealing the process of ‘meaning making’ undertaken by actors in the process of developing policy responses to various dilemmas. We explore this notion in the context of de-growth or post-growth. De-growth is a way of thinking about the economy in ways that are not growth oriented, or fixated on GDP, but on the redistribution of wealth and living within the Earth’s ecosystems

Ellen White and Subordination Within the Trinity

    Get PDF
The Seventh-day Adventist Church has been engaged in a debate about the role of women in ministry, especially as it concerns ordination. While engaging in this debate, some have used the doctrine of Trinity to support their understanding of the different roles in gender. Specifically, the subordination of Jesus to the Father as evidence of a correlation with the subordination of women to men. In order to find support for the way some believe ministry should be practiced, they have turned to the writings of Ellen White. They have attempted to support a subordinationism within the Trinity with her writings. When analyzing her writings, one needs to take into account her confirmatory role as it pertains to doctrines, including the doctrine of the Trinity. Her earlier statements which have been used as evidence of subordinationism can also be read in an equalitarianism position. Therefore, they are too obscure to be used as evidence for either side. However, after the doctrine of the Trinity was being explicitly expressed in the 1890’s, White was stressing the equality of the Trinity and not a position of hierarchy. Overall, subordinationism of the Trinity is not explicitly proven in the writings of Ellen White and therefore she should not be used as confirmatory evidence of that position

Pigment analysis by Raman microscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) of thirteenth to fourteenth century illuminations and cuttings from Bologna

    Get PDF
Non-destructive pigment analysis by Raman microscopy (RM) and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) has been carried out on some Bolognese illuminations and cuttings chosen to represent the beginnings, evolution and height of Bolognese illuminated manuscript production. Dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and held in a private collection, the study provides evidence for the pigments generally used in this period. The results, which are compared with those obtained for other north Italian artwork, show the developments in usage of artistic materials and technique. Also addressed in this study is an examination of the respective roles of RM and pXRF analysis in this area of technical art history

College Graduates in the Nonmetropolitan South: Origins and Prospects

    Get PDF
This study documents the regional origins of the college-experienced population in the nonmetro South, using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 Cohort. As of 1994, the nonmetro South had generated over half of its own college-experienced adults between the ages of 30-38, a higher rate than that of any other region. Although the results of logistic regression estimates show that nonmetro southerners were less likely to attend college, those who left the region for college were more likely to return than other regional migrants, especially after age 30. In addition, the relatively low demand for college-trained labor in the nonmetro South made it possible for employers to meet their labor needs using a largely native workforce. College-experienced nonmetro southerners in the early 1990\u27s apparently were willing to work for lower earnings in their home region than they could earn elsewhere, yet they received higher pay on average than did other returnees
