The angular power spectrum of radio emission at 2.3 GHz
We have analysed the Rhodes/HartRAO survey at 2326 MHz and derived the global
angular power spectrum of Galactic continuum emission. In order to measure the
angular power spectrum of the diffuse component, point sources were removed
from the map by median filtering. A least-square fit to the angular power
spectrum of the entire survey with a power law spectrum C_l proportional to
l^{-alpha}, gives alpha = 2.43 +/- 0.01 for l = 2-100. The angular power
spectrum of radio emission appears to steepen at high Galactic latitudes and
for observed regions with |b| > 20 deg, the fitted spectral index is alpha =
2.92 +/- 0.07. We have extrapolated this result to 30 GHz (the lowest frequency
channel of Planck) and estimate that no significant contribution to the sky
temperature fluctuation is likely to come from synchrotron at degree-angular

Observations of the bright radio sources in the North Celestial Pole region at the RATAN-600 radio telescope
A survey of the North Celestial Pole region using the RATAN-600 radio
telescope at five frequencies in the range 2.3 to 21.7 GHz is described.
Sources were chosen from the NVSS catalogue. The flux densities of 171 sources
in the Declination range +75 to +88 are presented; typical flux density errors
are 5-10 percent including calibration errors. About 20 percent of the sources

Analysis of CMB foregrounds using a database for Planck
Within the scope of the Planck IDIS (Integrated Data Information System)
project we have started to develop the data model for time-ordered data and
full-sky maps. The data model is part of the Data Management Component (DMC), a
software system designed according to a three-tier architecture which allows
complete separation between data storage and processing. The DMC is already
being used for simulation activities and the modeling of some foreground
components. We have ingested several Galactic surveys into the database and
used the science data-access interface to process the data. The data structure
for full-sky maps utilises the HEALPix tessellation of the sphere. We have been
able to obtain consistent measures of the angular power spectrum of the

Altered signaling through IL-12 receptor in children with very high serum IgE levels
An alteration of Th1/Th2 homeostasis may lead to diseases in humans. In this study, we investigated
whether an impaired IL-12R signaling occurred in children with elevated serum IgE levels divided on
the basis of the IgE levels (group A: >2000 kU/l; group B: <2000 kU/l). We evaluated the integrity of
the IL-12R signaling through the analysis of phosphorylation/activation of STAT4, and mRNA expression
and membrane assembly of the receptor chains. At a functional level, a proliferative defect of lymphocytes
from group A patients was observed. In these patients, an abnormal IL-12R signaling was documented,
and this finding was associated with abnormal expression of the IL-12Rb2 chain. Our data
indicate that in patients with very high IgE levels the generation of Th1 response is impaired, and that
this abnormality associates with abnormal IL-12R signaling
Hardware prototyping and validation of a W-ΔDOR digital signal processor
Microwave tracking, usually performed by on ground processing of the signals coming from a spacecraft, represents a crucial aspect in every deep-space mission. Various noise sources, including receiver noise, affect these signals, limiting the accuracy of the radiometric measurements obtained from the radio link. There are several methods used for spacecraft tracking, including the Delta-Differential One-Way Ranging (ΔDOR) technique. In the past years, European Space Agency (ESA) missions relied on a narrowband ΔDOR system for navigation in the cruise phase. To limit the adverse effect of nonlinearities in the receiving chain, an innovative wideband approach to ΔDOR measurements has recently been proposed. This work presents the hardware implementation of a new version of the ESA X/Ka Deep Space Transponder based on the new tracking technique named Wideband ΔDOR (W-ΔDOR). The architecture of the new transponder guarantees backward compatibility with narrowband ΔDOR
The onset of X-ray emission in young stellar objects: a Chandra observation of the Serpens star-forming region
AIMS: To study the properties of X-ray emissions from young stellar objects
(YSOs), through their evolution from Class I to Class III and determine whether
Class 0 protostars emit in X-rays. METHODS: A deep Chandra X-ray observation of
the Serpens star-forming region was obtained. The Serpens Cloud Core is ideally
suited for this type of investigation, being populated by a dense and extremely
young cluster whose members are found in all different evolutionary stages,
including six well studied Class 0 sources. RESULTS: None of the six Class 0
protostars is detected in our observations, excluding the presence of sources
with X-ray luminosities > 0.4 10^30 erg/s (for column densities of the order of
4 10^{23} cm^-2, or A_V ~ 200). A total of 85 X-ray sources are detected and
the light curves and spectra of 35 YSOs are derived. There is a clear trend of
decreasing absorbing column densities as one moves from Class I to Class III
sources, and, possibly, evidence of decreasing plasma temperatures, too. We
observe a strong, long-duration, flare from a Class II low-mass star, for which
we derive a flaring loop length of the order of 20 stellar radii. We interpret
the flaring event as originating from a magnetic flux tube connecting the star
to its circumstellar disk. The presence of such a disk is supported by the
detection, in the spectrum of this star, of 6.4 keV Fe fluorescent emission.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
1.4 GHz polarimetric observations of the two fields imaged by the DASI experiment
We present results of polarization observations at 1.4 GHz of the two fields
imaged by the DASI experiment (, and , ,
respectively). Data were taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with
3.4 arcmin resolution and mJy beam sensitivity. The emission
is dominated by point sources and we do not find evidence for diffuse
synchrotron radiation even after source subtraction. This allows to estimate an
upper limit of the diffuse polarized emission. The extrapolation to 30 GHz
suggests that the synchrotron radiation is lower than the polarized signal
measured by the DASI experiment by at least 2 orders of magnitude. This further
supports the conclusions drawn by the DASI team itself about the negligible
Galactic foreground contamination in their data set, improving by a factor
the upper limit estimated by Leitch et al. (2005).
The dominant point source emission allows us to estimate the contamination of
the CMB by extragalactic foregrounds. We computed the power spectrum of their
contribution and its extrapolation to 30 GHz provides a framework where the CMB
signal should dominate. However, our results do not match the conclusions of
the DASI team about the negligibility of point source contamination, suggesting
to take into account a source subtraction from the DASI data.Comment: 7 pages, six figures, submitted to MNRA
Analysis of the thin layer of Galactic warm ionized gas in the range 20 < l < 30 deg, -1.5 < b < +1.5 deg
We present an analysis of the thin layer of Galactic warm ionized gas at an
angular resolution ~ 10'. This is carried out using radio continuum data at 1.4
GHz, 2.7 GHz and 5 GHz in the coordinate region 20 < l < 30 deg, -1.5 < b <
+1.5 deg. For this purpose, we evaluate the zero level of the 2.7 and 5 GHz
surveys using auxiliary data at 2.3 GHz and 408 MHz. The derived zero level
corrections are T_{zero}(2.7 GHz)=0.15 +/- 0.06 K and T_{zero}(5 GHz)=0.1 +/-
0.05 K. We separate the thermal (free-free) and non-thermal (synchrotron)
component by means of a spectral analysis performed adopting an antenna
temperature spectral index -2.1 for the free-free emission, a realistic spatial
distribution of indices for the synchrotron radiation and by fitting,
pixel-by-pixel, the Galactic spectral index. We find that at 5 GHz, for |b| = 0
deg, the fraction of thermal emission reaches a maximum value of 82%, while at
1.4 GHz, the corresponding value is 68%. In addition, for the thermal emission,
the analysis indicates a dominant contribution of the diffuse component
relative to the source component associated with discrete HII regions.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted to MNRA
Three Spin Spiky Strings in beta-deformed Background
We study rigidly rotating strings in -deformed
background with one spin along AdS and two angular momenta along . We
find the spiky string solutions and present the dispersion relation among
various charges in this background. We further generalize the result to the
