    Characterization of Staphylococcus spp. strains in milk from buffaloes with mastitis in Brazil: the need to identify to species level to avoid misidentification.

    ABSTRACT - Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland that affects dairy cattle worldwide causing economic losses. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) are the predominant cause of this type of infection. We have recently showed that coagulase-positive staphylococci could be misidentified. So, the aim of this study was to characterize the Staphylococcus spp. strains initially classified as coagulase-negative Staphylococci, isolated from buffalo with subclinical mastitis. Milk of buffaloes with mastitis in herds was collected and 9 strains were identified as CNS by phenotypic tests. Molecular methodologies latter identified the strains as coagulase-negative Staphylococcus chromogenes (5), coagulase-positive Staphylococcus hyicus (2) and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus (2). Our results strongly support the need to identify the isolates to a species level in order to avoid misidentification and to be aware of the classification using the coagulase test alone. RESUMO - A mastite é uma inflamação da glândula mamária que afeta o gado leiteiro em todo o mundo, causando perdas econômicas. Staphylococcus coagulase-negativa (SCN) são a causa predominante desse tipo de infecção. Mostrou-se recentemente que Staphylococcus coagulase-positiva podem ser identificados erroneamente. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar cepas de Staphylococcus spp. inicialmente classificados como Staphylococcus coagulase-negativa, isolados de búfalas com mastite subclínica. O leite de búfalas com mastite foi coletado, e nove cepas foram identificadas como SCN por testes fenotípicos. Metodologias moleculares identificaram as cepas como Staphylococcus chromogenes coagulase-negativa (5) Staphylococcus hyicus coagulase-positiva (2) e Staphylococcus aureus coagulase-positiva (2). Os resultados reforçam a necessidade de identificar as cepas em termos de espécie, a fim de se evitarem erros de identificação e estar atento à classificação utilizando o teste de coagulase sozinho

    Remarks on Dirac-like Monopole, Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons Electrodynamics in D=(2+1)

    Classical Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Electrodynamics in (2+1)D are studied in some details. General expressions for the potential and fields are obtained for both models, and some particular cases are explicitly solved. Conceptual and technical difficulties arise, however, for accelerated charges. The propagation of electromagnetic signals is also studied and their reverberation is worked out and discussed. Furthermore, we show that a Dirac-like monopole yields a (static) tangential electric field. We also discuss some classical and quantum consequences of the field created by such a monopole when acting upon an usual electric charge. In particular, we show that at large distances, the dynamics of one single charged particle under the action of such a potential and a constant (external) magnetic field as well, reduces to that of one central harmonic oscillator, presenting, however, an interesting angular sector which admits energy-eigenvalues. Among other peculiarities, both sectors, the radial and the angular one, present non-vanishing energy-eigenvalues for their lowest level. Moreover, those associated to the angle are shown to respond to discrete shifts of such a variable.     Orogenias paleozoicas en los Andes de Argentina y Chile y en la Península Antártica

    Congreso Geológico Argentino (20º. 2017. San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina). Simposio de Téctonica pre-andinaDurante el Neoproterozoico y Paleozoico, los Andes de Argentina y Chile, y desde fines del Paleozoico también la Península Antártica, formaron parte del margen SO de Gondwana. Durante este tiempo se acrecionaron a dicho margen varios fragmentos continentales de tamaño y aloctonía variable; denominados de N a S: Antofalla, Chi-Cu, Patagonia Occidental y Antártida Occidental. Estos fragmentos formaban parte de placas litosféricas, en ocasiones divididas en subplacas.     Rotavirus Rearranged Genomic RNA Segments Are Preferentially Packaged into Viruses Despite Not Conferring Selective Growth Advantage to Viruses

    The rotavirus (RV) genome consists of 11 double-stranded RNA segments. Sometimes, partial sequence duplication of an RNA segment leads to a rearranged RNA segment. To specify the impact of rearrangement, the replication efficiencies of human RV with rearranged segments 7, 11 or both were compared to these of the homologous human wild-type RV (wt-RV) and of the bovine wt-RV strain RF. As judged by viral growth curves, rotaviruses with a rearranged genome (r-RV) had no selective growth advantage over the homologous wt-RV. In contrast, r-RV were selected over wt-RV during competitive experiments (i.e mixed infections between r-RV and wt-RV followed by serial passages in cell culture). Moreover, when competitive experiments were performed between a human r-RV and the bovine wt-RV strain RF, which had a clear growth advantage, rearranged segments 7, 11 or both always segregated in viral progenies even when performing mixed infections at an MOI ratio of 1 r-RV to 100 wt-RV. Lastly, bovine reassortant viruses that had inherited a rearranged segment 7 from human r-RV were generated. Although substitution of wt by rearranged segment 7 did not result in any growth advantage, the rearranged segment was selected in the viral progenies resulting from mixed infections by bovine reassortant r-RV and wt-RV, even for an MOI ratio of 1 r-RV to 107 wt-RV. Lack of selective growth advantage of r-RV over wt-RV in cell culture suggests a mechanism of preferential packaging of the rearranged segments over their standard counterparts in the viral progeny

    Marine probiotics: increasing coral resistance to bleaching through microbiome manipulation

    Although the early coral reef-bleaching warning system (NOAA/USA) is established, there is no feasible treatment that can minimize temperature bleaching and/or disease impacts on corals in the field. Here, we present the first attempts to extrapolate the widespread and well-established use of bacterial consortia to protect or improve health in other organisms (e.g., humans and plants) to corals. Manipulation of the coral-associated microbiome was facilitated through addition of a consortium of native (isolated from Pocillopora damicornis and surrounding seawater) putatively beneficial microorganisms for corals (pBMCs), including five Pseudoalteromonas sp., a Halomonas taeanensis and a Cobetia marina-related species strains. The results from a controlled aquarium experiment in two temperature regimes (26 °C and 30 °C) and four treatments (pBMC; pBMC with pathogen challenge – Vibrio coralliilyticus, VC; pathogen challenge, VC; and control) revealed the ability of the pBMC consortium to partially mitigate coral bleaching. Significantly reduced coral-bleaching metrics were observed in pBMC-inoculated corals, in contrast to controls without pBMC addition, especially challenged corals, which displayed strong bleaching signs as indicated by significantly lower photopigment contents and Fv/Fm ratios. The structure of the coral microbiome community also differed between treatments and specific bioindicators were correlated with corals inoculated with pBMC (e.g., Cobetia sp.) or VC (e.g., Ruegeria sp.). Our results indicate that the microbiome in corals can be manipulated to lessen the effect of bleaching, thus helping to alleviate pathogen and temperature stresses, with the addition of BMCs representing a promising novel approach for minimizing coral mortality in the face of increasing environmental impacts

    EFEITOS DA POLÍTICA DE SALÁRIO MÍNIMO SOBRE O MERCADO DE TRABALHO METROPOLITANO: UMA ANÁLISE EMPÍRICA A PARTIR DE VETORES AUTORREGRESSIVOS (VAR) - (2003-2015)

    RESUMO Com intuito de verificar os efeitos que a política de salário mínimo exerce sobre o mercado de trabalho metropolitano brasileiro, o presente estudo contribui ao verificar a sua inter-relação com variáveis como taxa de atividade, grau de informalidade e taxa de desemprego em quatro regiões metropolitanas (Recife, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte e São Paulo), separadamente, no período de janeiro de 2003 a março de 2015. Ao utilizar o método de autorregressão vetorial (VAR), os resultados mostram que a relação entre salário mínimo e taxa de atividade se deu com ingresso de mão de obra apenas em uma região estudada. Nas demais regiões observam-se tanto uma tendência de queda no grau de informalidade quanto um aumento na taxa de desemprego
