Bose-Einstein Correlations in Multihadron Events at LEP
Bose-Einstein correlations in pairs of identical particles were analyzed in
e+ e- multihadron annihilations at ~91.2 GeV at LEP. The first studies involved
identical charged pions and the emitting source size was determined. Then the
study of charged kaons suggested that the radius depends on the mass of the
emitted particles. Subsequenty the dependence of the source radius on the event
multiplicity was analyzed. The study of the correlations in neutral pions and
neutral kaons extended these concepts to neutral particles. The shape of the
source was analyzed in 3 dimensions and was found not to be spherically
symmetric. In recent studies at LEP the correlations were analyzed in intervals
of the average pair transverse momentum and of the pair rapidity to study the
correlations between the pion production points and their momenta
(position-momentum correlations). The latest e+ e- data are consistent with an

Bone health in transgender people: a narrative review
Bone health in transmen and transwomen is an important issue that needs to be evaluated by clinicians. Prior to gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT), transwomen have lower bone mineral density (BMD) and a higher prevalence of osteopenia than cismen probably related to external factors, such as hypovitaminosis D and less physical activities. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues in transgender youth may cause bone loss; however, the addition of GAHT restores or at least improves BMD in both transboys and transgirls. The maintenance or increase in BMD shown in short-term longitudinal studies emphasizes that GAHT does not have a negative effect on BMD in adult transwomen and transmen. Gonadectomy is not a risk factor if GAHT is taken correctly. The prevalence of fractures in the transgender population seems to be the same as in the general population but more studies are required on this aspect. To evaluate the risk of osteoporosis, it is mandatory to define the most appropriate reference group not only taking into consideration the medical aspects but also in respect of the selected gender identity of each person
A higher Angiogenin expression is associated with a non-nuclear Maspin location in laryngeal carcinoma
Objectives. In numerous malignancies, angiogenin (ANG) and Maspin are important proangiogenic and antiangiogenic regulators, respectively. The aim of this study was to identify potential relationships between the biological roles of these two proteins in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC).
Methods. Immunohistochemical staining for ANG and Maspin was performed on specimens from 76 consecutive LSCC patients treated with surgery alone, considering the subcellular pattern of Maspin expression. Univariate and multivariate statistical models were used for prognostic purposes.
Results. On univariate analysis, a different level of ANG expression was seen for patients stratified by subcellular Maspin expression pattern: the mean ANG expression was higher in cases with a nonnuclear MASPIN expression than in those with a nuclear pattern (P=0.002). Disease-free survival (DFS; in months) differed significantly when patients were stratified by N stage (P=0.01). Patients whose Maspin expression was nonnuclear (i.e., it was cytoplasmic or there was none) had a significantly higher recurrence rate (P<0.001), and shorter DFS (P=0.01) than those with a nuclear Maspin pattern. The mean ANG expression was significantly higher in cases with loco-regional recurrent disease (P=0.007); and patients with an ANG expression 655.0% had a significantly shorter DFS than those with an ANG expression <5.0% (P=0.007). On multivariate analysis, ANG expression 655.0% was a significant, independent, negative prognostic factor in terms of DFS (P=0.041).
Conclusion. Our results support the hypothesis that a higher ANG expression is associated with a nonnuclear Maspin expression pattern in patients with LSCC. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between the ANG and Maspin pathways, and their potential diagnostic and therapeutic role in LSCC

Although pain has not yet been fully studied and characterized, it is a symptom that can be often found in patients with SjS, who mainly complain of neuropathic pain, followed by nociceptive pain. The latter when combined with widespread dysfunctional symptoms is defined fibromyalgia. The aim of this work is to analyze the scientific literature on the presence of pain in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome

Experimental Study of Noise-induced Phase Synchronization in Vertical-cavity Lasers
We report the experimental evidence of noise-induced phase synchronization in
a vertical cavity laser. The polarized laser emission is entrained with the
input periodic pump modulation when an optimal amount of white, gaussian noise
is applied. We characterize the phenomenon, evaluating the average frequency of
the output signal and the diffusion coefficient of the phase difference
variable. Their values are roughly independent on different waveforms of
periodic input, provided that a simple condition for the amplitudes is
satisfied. The experimental results are compared with numerical simulations of
a Langevin model
Bulk Etch Rate Measurements and Calibrations of Plastic Nuclear Track Detectors
New calibrations of CR39 and Makrofol nuclear track detectors have been
obtained using 158 A GeV Pb (82+) and In (49+) ions; a new method for the bulk
etch rate determination, using both cone height and base diameter measurements
was developed. The CR39 charge resolution based on the etch-pit base area
measurement is adequate to identify nuclear fragments in the interval 7 <=
Z/beta <= 49. For CR39 the detection threshold is at REL~50 MeV cm^2/g,
corresponding to a nuclear fragment with Z/beta~7. Base cone area distributions
for Makrofol foils exposed to Pb (82+) ions have shown for the first time all
peaks due to nuclear fragments with Z > 50; the distribution of the etched cone
heights shows well separated individual peaks for Z/beta = 78 - 83 (charge
pickup). The Makrofol detection threshold is at REL 2700 MeV cm^2/g,
corresponding to a nuclear fragment with Z/beta~50.Comment: 11 pages, 5 EPS figures. Submitted to Nucl. Instr. Meth.
High adenosine extracellular levels induce glioblastoma aggressive traits modulating the mesenchymal stromal cell secretome
Glioblastoma is an aggressive, fast-growing brain tumor influenced by the composition of the tumor microenvironment (TME) in which mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) play a pivotal role. Adenosine (ADO), a purinergic signal molecule, can reach up to high micromolar concentrations in TME. The activity of specific adenosine receptor subtypes on glioma cells has been widely explored, as have the effects of MSCs on tumor progression. However, the effects of high levels of ADO on glioma aggressive traits are still unclear as is its role in cancer cells-MSC cross-talk. Herein, we first studied the role of extracellular Adenosine (ADO) on isolated human U343MG cells as a glioblastoma cellular model, finding that at high concentrations it was able to prompt the gene expression of Snail and ZEB1, which regulate the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) process, even if a complete transition was not reached. These effects were mediated by the induction of ERK1/2 phosphorylation. Additionally, ADO affected isolated bone marrow derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) by modifying the pattern of secreted inflammatory cytokines. Then, the conditioned medium (CM) of BM-MSCs stimulated with ADO and a co-culture system were used to investigate the role of extracellular ADO in GBM–MSC cross-talk. The CM promoted the increase of glioma motility and induced a partial phenotypic change of glioblastoma cells. These effects were maintained when U343MG cells and BM-MSCs were co-cultured. In conclusion, ADO may affect glioma biology directly and through the modulation of the paracrine factors released by MSCs overall promoting a more aggressive phenotype. These results point out the importance to deeply investigate the role of extracellular soluble factors in the glioma cross-talk with other cell types of the TME to better understand its pathological mechanisms
