    Design and Optimization of Heat Integrated Distillation

    Process integration is currently considered as the main trend to improve process performance, and is one of the major approaches to reduce the annual operating and capital costs in the plant. For distillation systems, heat integration technique provides such an approach to improve the traditional simple column sequences. This work presents the optimization of distillation column sequences based on creation of maximum possible heat integration and minimizing the total annual cost of process. All the optimum simple sequences and possible heat integrated sequences are designed and considered to find the best heat integrated sequence with the minimum total annual cost. Sequences are simulated and the objective function is modeled. Basic operation parameters of sequences are changed according to the process constraints to find all the possible heat integration and minimize the objective function. The best structures with the minimum total annual cost are designed and compared for the considered industrial case study. Results show the height percent of optimization of process costs by the internal heat recovery of integration.Key words: Distillation; Sequence; Modeling; Integration; Optimizatio

    Development of a new hybrid technique for estimating of relative uplift force in gravity dams based on whale optimization algorithm

    A numerical model is developed in this study using the finite element method (FEM) to estimate relative total uplift force for different positions of holes of drainage gallery in the foundation of Guangzhao gravity dam, located in China. The data of the relative total uplift force generated for different input combinations using the FEM were used to develop machine learning (ML) models. A three-layer Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and a new hybrid model known as ANN-Whale Optimization Algorithm (ANN-WOA) were used for this purpose. The results showed that R2, RMSE, NSE, KGE and RE% for ANN-WOA model in estimation of the relative total uplift forces were 0.998, 0.021, 0.989, 0.964 and 3.3% respectively and those for ANN model were 0.980, 0.023, 0.982, 0.953 and 4.67% respectively, which indicate the higher accuracy of ANN-WOA model compared to ANN model. The new hybrid model, ANN-WOA with the less RMSE and RE% and high KGE and NSE is a more appropriate model for the estimation of the relative total uplift force. The extracted metrics of violin plots indicated that the probability distribution of the relative total uplift force estimated using ANN-WOA model was very similar to that obtained using the FEM

    Development of an Integrated Structure for the Tri-Generation of Power, Liquid Carbon Dioxide, and Medium Pressure Steam Using a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell, a Dual Pressure Linde-Hampson Liquefaction Plant, and a Heat Recovery Steam Generator

    Due to the increase in energy consumption and energy prices, the reduction in fossil fuel resources, and increasing concerns about global warming and environmental issues, it is necessary to develop more efficient energy conversion systems with low environmental impacts. Utilizing fuel cells in the combined process is a method of refrigeration and electricity simultaneous production with a high efficiency and low pollution. In this study, a combined process for the tri-generation of electricity, medium pressure steam, and liquid carbon dioxide by utilizing a molten carbonate fuel cell, a dual pressure Linde-Hampson liquefaction plant and a heat recovery steam generator is developed. This combined process produces 65.53 MW of electricity, 27.8 kg/s of medium pressure steam, and 142.9 kg/s of liquid carbon dioxide. One of the methods of long-term energy storage involves the use of a carbon dioxide liquefaction system. Some of the generated electricity is used in industrial and residential areas and the rest is used for storage as liquid carbon dioxide. Liquid carbon dioxide can be used for peak shavings in buildings. The waste heat from the Linde-Hampson liquefaction plant is used to produce the fuel cell inlet steam. Moreover, the exhaust heat of the fuel cell and gas turbine would be used to produce the medium pressure steam. The total efficiency of this combined process and the coefficient of performance of the refrigeration plant are 82.21% and 1.866, respectively. The exergy analysis of this combined process reveals that the exergy efficiency and the total exergy destruction are 73.18% and 102.7 MW, respectively. The highest rate of exergy destruction in the hybrid process equipment belongs to the fuel cell (37.72%), the HX6 heat exchanger (8.036%), and the HX7 heat exchanger (6.578%). The results of the sensitivity analysis show that an increase in the exit pressure of the V1 valve by 13.33% would result in an increase in the refrigeration energy by 2.151% and a reduction in the refrigeration cycle performance by 9.654%. Moreover, by increasing the inlet fuel to the fuel cell, the thermal efficiency of the whole combined process rises by 18.09%, and the whole exergy efficiency declines by 12.95%

    New Integrated Process for the Efficient Production of Methanol, Electrical Power, and Heating

    In this paper, a novel process is developed to cogenerate 4741 kg/h of methanol, 297.7 kW of electricity, and 35.73 ton/h of hot water, including a hydrogen purification system, an absorption–compression refrigeration cycle (ACRC), a regenerative Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), and parabolic solar troughs. The heat produced in the methanol reactor is recovered in the ORC and ACRC. Parabolic solar troughs provide thermal power to the methanol distillation tower. Thermal efficiencies of the integrated structure and the liquid methanol production cycle are 78.14% and 60.91%, respectively. The process’s total exergy efficiency and irreversibility are 89.45% and 16.89 MW. The solar thermal collectors take the largest share of exergy destruction (34%), followed by heat exchangers (30%) and mixers (19%). Based on the sensitivity analysis, D17 (mixture of H2 and low-pressure fuel gas before separation) was the most influential stream affecting the performance of the process. With the temperature decline of stream D17 from −139 to −149 °C, the methanol production rate and the total thermal efficiency rose to 4741.2 kg/h and 61.02%, respectively. Moreover, the growth in the hydrogen content from 55% to 80% molar of the feed gas, the flow rate of liquid methanol, and the total exergy efficiency declined to 4487 kg/h and 86.05%

    From waste to wealth: Unlocking the value of copper anode slimes through systematic characterization and pretreatment

    Technology, in addition to supply and demand, is driving current advances in mineral processing. Over the past three decades, demand for various minerals has continued to rise, while the mineral processing sector has faced challenges such as the need for more sophisticated ore treatment, lower plant feed quality, and poorer plant performance due to mixing of ores with varying characteristics. Gravity separation has long been a cost-effective method for the mining industry, especially in the processing of precious metals. Copper anode slime contains significant amounts of gold, silver, and platinum group metals. In this study, we tested the functionality of a slime shaking table for recovering precious metal components by recycling barite particles from the copper anode slime. Additionally, we used several characterization methods, including backscattered electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, optical microscopy, and physical testing, to improve our understanding of the copper anode slime particle phases. This study highlights the challenges associated with recycling and processing secondary materials and demonstrates the complexity of physical separation methods for extracting barite particles from copper anode slime

    Vitamin D is associated with metabotropic but not neurotrophic effects of exercise in ovariectomized rats

    Abstract Purpose Here, we studied the beneficial effects of aerobic exercise on metabolic syndrome components, cognitive performance, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and irisin in ovariectomized rats with different serum vitamin D (Vit D) status. Methods Eighty female wistar rats were divided into 2 groups of sham operated (sham, n = 8), and ovariectomized (OVX, n = 72). Then OVX were divided into 9 groups of receiving combination of exercise protocol with low dose of Vit D (OVX + EXE + LD), high dose of Vit D (OVX + EXE + HD), Vit D deficiency (OVX + EXE − D), and (OVX + EXE + Veh). Also non exercised groups of OVX receiving high dose of Vit D (OVX + HD), low dose of Vit D (OVX + LD), Vit D deficiency (OVX − D), and Veh (OVX + Veh) were included. After 2 months of related interventions, spatial memory was assessed using Morris water maze (MWM), and then metabolic syndrome components were measured. Results High dose of Vit D supplementation showed significant reduction in weight (p = 0.001), lipid profiles (p = 0.001), visceral fat (p = 0.001) and waist circumference (p = 0.001) regardless of exercising or not, with no change in cognitiive function. Serum BDNF level was significantly higher in Vit D deficient group (p = 0.001), and was decreased in the OVX + HD. In contrary, irisin did not show any significant relationship with serum concentration of Vit D, while it was significantly elevated in the exercised groups compared with non-exercised counterparts. Conclusion Vit D insufficiency deteriorates metabolic syndrome components, and elevates serum BDNF as a compensatory metabotropic factor, and further supplementation significantly attenuates these components parallel with reduction in BDNF. In addition, aerobic exercise successfully induces various metabolic benefits, provided optimum serum level of Vit D

    Cerebral vasospasm following traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage

    <ul><li><strong>Background:</strong> Cerebral vasospasm is a preventable cause of death and disability in patients who experience aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of cerebral vasospasm following traumatic SAH and its relationship with different brain injuries and severity of trauma.</li><li><strong>Method</strong>s: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2006 to March 2007 in department of Neurosurgery in Al-Zahra Hospital. Consecutive head-injured patients who had SAH on the basis of an admission CT scan were prospectively evaluated. The severity of the trauma was evaluated by determining Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score on admission. Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography evaluations were performed at least 48 hours after admission and one week thereafter. Vasospasm in the MCA and ACA was defined by mean flow velocity (FV) of more than 120 cm/sec with a Lindegaard index (MVA/ICA FV ratio) higher than 3. Basilar artery vasospasm was defined by FV higher than 85 cm/sec.</li><li><strong>Results</strong>: Seventy seven patients with tSAH were enrolled from whom 13 were excluded. The remaining were 52 (81.2%) men and 12 (18.7%) women, with a mean age of 37.89 years. Trauma was severe in 11 (17.2%), moderate in 13 (20.3%), and mild in 40 (62.5%) patients.     Investigation of the relationship between personality characteristics and vasomotor symptoms in menopausal women

    Background: Research demonstrates that most of the menopausal symptoms and problems are the reflection of individual and social circumstances rather than the endocrine events of the menopause. As majority of women live 30 years or more through postmenopausal period, treatment and following up their problems during this period is among the main duties of a midwife. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between personality traits and vasomotor symptoms in postmenopausal women. Materials and Methods: This correlation study was conducted on 400 postmenopausal women referring to the training maternity centers of Mashhad, Iran. Subjects were selected through simple sampling method and filled NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI (questionnaire. Their daily records of hot flashes and night sweats were also collected. NEO-FFI questionnaire assesses the five personality aspects of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. After the data were collected, they were analyzed by Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, and linear regression statistical tests. P < 0.05 was considered as a statistically significant value. Results: Most of the women were in average level of personality traits. Among the aspects of personality traits, there was a significant correlation between intensity of hot flashes (P = 0.041) and night sweats (P = 0.028), and conscientiousness. Conclusions: According to the results of the study, during treatment of the vasomotor symptoms, a midwife should pay close attention to the personality of postmenopausal women to achieve an effective treatment. These women should also be referred to a psychologist, if needed
