This study aimed to investigate the role of intermediary in professional ethics and career anchors on the causal relationship between psychological well-being and quality of work life of nurses. Methods: The statistical population consisted of all nurses working in public hospitals of Urmia (1363 subjects) in 2016 who 300 nurses selected by stratified random sampling method. Data were collected using 4 Standard questionnaires: professional ethics, career anchors, psychological well-being scale and quality of work life questionnaire. Data were analyzed using t-test and structural equation modeling by SPSS and LISREL software. Results: The results showed that the direct effect of variable psychological well-being on professional ethics (r=0.23, P<0.01). The direct effect of psychological well-being variable on career anchors and professional ethics on the quality of working life was significant, respectively (r=0.48, P<0.01), (r=0.39, P<0.01). Also, the direct effect of career anchors on the quality of working life was significant (r=0.31, P<0.01). It was reported a significant and indirect effect of psychological well-being on the quality of working life (P<0.01). Conclusion: Regarding the research results, it is suggested to promote the quality of nurses’ work life, enhancing psychological well-being followed by professional ethics and support employment are taken into consideration

Mathematical Modeling of Schizophrenia

Abnormal brain function in schizophrenia involves an extended network of brain structures. In schizophrenia, an abnormal dopamine activity in accordance with altered GABA and glutamate transmission appears to interfere with this process. In this study, we have examined the effect of dopamine hyperactivity on CA3 pyramidal cells using a mathematical model. Our simulation results show that while normal activity of dopamine system causes the membrane potential of pyramidal cell to display a periodic bursting behavior, hyperactivity of this system brings about irregular and aperiodic patterns of activity. In addition, it is suggested that hypo-glutamatergic conditions result in reduced activation of the striatal complex and may induce psychotic symptoms. Thus, we also investigated the role of glutamate level in postsynaptic cell activity. Simulation results indicate that hypo-glutamatergic condition has the same effect on the membrane potential of pyramidal cells, i.e. aperiodic and irregular firing patterns. Based on these results, we hypothesize that glutamate receptor activation may have good therapeutic results in schizophrenia

Background: Mental health issues and quality of life are among the critical items of general health in individuals, especially transgender subjects. The present study aimed to assess the quality of life, depression, anxiety, and stress in transgender women and determine the factors contributing to them. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 127 Iranian transgender women using a convenience sampling method from August 2019 to April 2020. The Quality of Life (QOL) was determined using the World Health Organization (WHO) Questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF). The DASS-21 questionnaire was employed to evaluate the subjects’ anxiety, depression, and stress. Results: In total, 48% of the individuals had a moderate QOL. The highest score was achieved in the physical health dimension and the lowest in social relationships. Depression, anxiety, and stress were severe and extremely severe in 22%, 20.4%, and 17.3% of the subjects, respectively. A significant relationship was observed between the overall perception of QOL and depression, anxiety, and stress (P<0.001).A significant positive association was observed between the subscales of QOL and education and favorable economic status among transgender women. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation existed between the subscales of QOL with age and sexual violence. Regarding mental health, education had a significant relationship with reduced stress and anxiety, and good economic status had a significant relationship with reduced depression. Still, sexual violence was associated with increased stress in individuals. Conclusion: The present study results emphasize that transgender women are at risk of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress. These conditions are in close association with the quality of life in this population. Moreover, considering the high sexual violence in transgender women of the present study and its considerable effects on mental health disorders, there is a strong need to develop violence prevention services in the community and legal protections in this area. The culture of preventing violence against women in society should be emphasized, and education to families should be considered the first line of prevention

Background and Aims: Soil washing using surfactant is a promising technology for PAHs removal from soil transferring them into liquid phase. The performance of this process is influenced by several factors such as surfactant concentration, washing time, liquid:soil ratio (L/S) and the presence of natural organic matter, which in the present study was totally investigated using the nonionic surfactant Tween 80.Materials and Methods: Surfactant solution with three various concentrations of 500, 2750, 5000 mg/l, at liquid:soil ratios of 10, 20, 30 v/w (ml/g) containing three concentrations of 0, 10, 20 mg/l humic acid (asNOM) was added to phenanthrene contaminated soil samples. The samples were placed on a shaker for timeinterval of 2, 13 and 24 hours, then it was injected to HPLC for phenanthrene concentration analyze. This research was conducted on the basis of central composite design by using response surface method (RSM) in 29 experimental runs. Results: Maximum removal efficiency (77.35%) was achieved under the experimental conditions of 5000 mg/l surfactant concentration, 30 v/w liquid:soil ratio, absence of humic acid and 24 h washing time. Surfactant concentration with impact value of 82.03% was the most effective parameter in phenanthrene removal. L/S was also the other significant factor (P<0.0001), but humic acid and washing time were, statistically, insignificant. The interaction between surfactant concentration and L/S was significant too. Conclusion: Considering the conditions of Iran’s soils containing 3-6 percent organic matter and based on the suggestions of RSM with 95.10% desirability, the optimum conditions for washing high- phenanthrene soil (about 500 mg/kg) with minimum washing time of 2 hours were as 5000 mg/l surfactant concentration, 30 v/w (ml/g) liquid:soil ratio, and 2.1 mg/l humic acid concentration (6.30%).Key words: phenanthrene, soil washing, surfactant Tween 80, optimizatio

The Meta Problem of Consciousness: To Question the Nature of Human Reports

Get PDF
The hard problem of consciousness is the problem of explaining subjective experience. This problem is based on the notion that explaining brain functions cannot lead to explaining experience (Chalmers, 1995). The meta problem of consciousness is the problem that why we think there is a hard problem of consciousness. David Chalmers suggests that solving the meta problem deals with human reports of the hard problem- named problem reports. He notes that since problem reports are facts of human behavior we can consider them explainable by functional terms. Therefore, the meta problem is an easy problem (Chalmers, 2018). In this article, we are trying to question the nature of human reports

Existential and Behavioral Senses of the Meta Problem

The meta problem can be seen in two different ways: a problem considering the existence of the hard problem, and a problem considering the behaviors related to expressing reports about the hard problem. The existential way of seeing is equivalent to the first approximation of the meta problem while Chalmers introduces it, and the behavioral way of seeing is equivalent to the second approximation. We are going to argue that these are two different problems and there are different solutions to each of them. In the existential sense, one remains silent on the nature of the meta problem processes, while in the behavioral sense, one restricts their nature of those processes to behavior. This difference is deep enough that we can replace the meta problem with two distinct problems: the existential meta problem, and the behavioral meta problem. The subject of the existential problem is purely the existence of the hard problem of consciousness regardless of any premise on how such a problem comes into existence. While with behavioral problem, we presuppose that the hard problem comes into existence only by the means of behavior, and its subjects would be certain cognitive functions. The behavioral problem has strong connections to materialism, and its solution seems completely achievable through fulfillment of the meta problem programme. A solution only requires explaining how neural mechanisms regulate the formation of problem reports. On the other hand, the existential problem would be in favor of one without materialist commitments. The neutrality of the existential problem allows one to apply her metaphysical premises about the nature of processes responsible for bringing the hard problem into existence. It results in shaping other versions of the meta problem considering one’s metaphysical position –e.g. idealist meta problem, and interactionist meta problem. Subsequent solutions to each of those problems might have quite different appearance than what the meta problem programme follows. Once the behavioral problem is solved, the existential problem remains intact for non-materialist metaphysical positions
