The spatial distribution and dispersal dynamics of adventive plants and apophytes at the major railway lines and stations in the middle part of Westphalia (including the more extended part of the Ruhrgebiet, the biggest urban-industrial agglomeration in Germany) are discussed. Remarkable dynamics of migration and colonization of railway areas have taken place within the last few years. The recent range extension is illustrated by representatively railway plants (Geranium purpureum VILL., G. rotundifolium L., Tragopogon major JACQ.)

Using a composite grid approach in a complex coastal domain to estimate estuarine residence time

The definitive version was published in Computers & Geosciences 36 (2010): 921-935, doi:10.1016/j.cageo.2009.11.008.We investigate the processes that influence residence time in a partially mixed estuary using a three-dimensional circulation model. The complex geometry of the study region is not optimal for a structured grid model and so we developed a new method of grid connectivity. This involves a novel approach that allows an unlimited number of individual grids to be combined in an efficient manner to produce a composite grid. We then implemented this new method into the numerical Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) and developed a composite grid of the Hudson River estuary region to investigate the residence time of a passive tracer. Results show that the residence time is a strong function of the time of release (spring vs. neap tide), the along-channel location, and the initial vertical placement. During neap tides there is a maximum in residence time near the bottom of the estuary at the mid-salt intrusion length. During spring tides the residence time is primarily a function of along-channel location and does not exhibit a strong vertical variability. This model study of residence time illustrates the utility of the grid connectivity method for circulation and dispersion studies in regions of complex geometry.W.R. The definitive version was published in Continental Shelf Research 27 (2007): 375-399, doi:10.1016/j.csr.2005.07.008.A mooring and tripod array was deployed from the fall of 2002 through the spring of 2003 on the Po prodelta to measure sediment transport processes associated with sediment delivered from the Po River. Observations on the prodelta revealed wave-supported gravity flows of high concentration mud suspensions that are dynamically and kinematically similar to those observed on the Eel shelf (Traykovski et al., 2000). Due to the dynamic similarity between the two sites, a simple one-dimensional across-shelf model with the appropriate bottom boundary condition was used to examine fluxes associated with this transport mechanism at both locations. To calculate the sediment concentrations associated with the wave-dominated and wave-current resuspension, a bottom boundary condition using a reference concentration was combined with an “active layer” formulation to limit the amount of sediment in suspension. Whereas the wave-supported gravity flow mechanism dominates the transport on the Eel shelf, on the Po prodelta flux due to this mechanism is equal in magnitude to transport due to wave resuspension and wind-forced mean currents in cross-shore direction. Southward transport due to wave resuspension and wind forced mean currents move an order of magnitude more sediment along-shore than the downslope flux associated wave-supported gravity flows. This work funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research under grant number #N00014-02-10378, under the direction of program manager, Tom Drake

Single-Pion Production in pp Collisions at 0.95 GeV/c (II)

The single-pion production reactions ppdπ+pp\to d\pi^+, ppnpπ+pp\to np\pi^+ and ppppπ0pp\to pp\pi^0 were measured at a beam momentum of 0.95 GeV/c (TpT_p \approx 400 MeV) using the short version of the COSY-TOF spectrometer. The central calorimeter provided particle identification, energy determination and neutron detection in addition to time-of-flight and angle measurements from other detector parts. Thus all pion production channels were recorded with 1-4 overconstraints. Main emphasis is put on the presentation and discussion of the npπ+np\pi^+ channel, since the results on the other channels have already been published previously. The total and differential cross sections obtained are compared to theoretical calculations. In contrast to the ppπ0pp\pi^0 channel we find in the npπ+np\pi^+ channel a strong influence of the Δ\Delta excitation already at this energy close to threshold. In particular we find a (3cos2Θ+1)(3 cos^2\Theta + 1) dependence in the pion angular distribution, typical for a pure s-channel Δ\Delta excitation and identical to that observed in the dπ+d\pi^+ channel. Since the latter is understood by a s-channel resonance in the 1D2^1D_2 pnpn partial wave, we discuss an analogous scenario for the pnπ+pn\pi^+ channel

On the Production of π+π+\pi^+\pi^+ Pairs in pp Collisions at 0.8 GeV

Data accumulated recently for the exclusive measurement of the ppppπ+πpp\to pp\pi^+\pi^- reaction at a beam energy of 0.793 GeV using the COSY-TOF spectrometer have been analyzed with respect to possible events from the ppnnπ+π+pp \to nn\pi^+\pi^+ reaction channel. The latter is expected to be the only ππ\pi\pi production channel, which contains no major contributions from resonance excitation close to threshold and hence should be a good testing ground for chiral dynamics in the ππ\pi\pi production process. No single event has been found, which meets all conditions for being a candidate for the ppnnπ+π+pp \to nn \pi^+\pi^+ reaction. This gives an upper limit for the cross section of 0.16 μ\mub (90% C.L.), which is more than an order of magnitude smaller than the cross sections of the other two-pion production channels at the same incident energy

Auf schwankendem Grund. Dekadenz und Tod im Venedig der Moderne

    Get PDF

Two-Pion Production in Proton-Proton Collisions with Polarized Beam

    Get PDF
The two-pion production reaction ppppπ+π\vec{p}p\to pp\pi^+\pi^- was measured with a polarized proton beam at TpT_p \approx 750 and 800 MeV using the short version of the COSY-TOF spectrometer. The implementation of a delayed pulse technique for Quirl and central calorimeter provided positive π+\pi^+ identification in addition to the standard particle identification, energy determination as well as time-of-flight and angle measurements. Thus all four-momenta of the emerging particles could be determined with 1-4 overconstraints. Total and differential cross sections as well as angular distributions of the vector analyzing power have been obtained. They are compared to previous data and theoretical calculations. In contrast to predictions we find significant analyzing power values up to AyA_y = 0.3

Gerschenkron revisited: The new corporate Russia

© 2015, Journal of Economic Issues / Association for Evolutionary Economics. Our analysis is based on firm-specific data compiled from the Russian Trading System stock exchange and SKRIN (CKP-H in Russian) database. We seek to identify the factors behind Russias dramatically improved corporate sector performance from the beginning of the 2000s to December 2007. We argue that improved long-term corporate performance was a consequence of several policy initiatives associated with the state-dominated banking sector, which enabled statesubsidized investment funds to be channeled from a structurally reengineered energy sector to targeted investment projects located in other industries. We claim that Russias industrial strategy closely conforms to Alexander Gerschenkrons catch-up theory
