    Leray and LANS-α\alpha modeling of turbulent mixing

    Mathematical regularisation of the nonlinear terms in the Navier-Stokes equations provides a systematic approach to deriving subgrid closures for numerical simulations of turbulent flow. By construction, these subgrid closures imply existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the corresponding modelled system of equations. We will consider the large eddy interpretation of two such mathematical regularisation principles, i.e., Leray and LANSα-\alpha regularisation. The Leray principle introduces a {\bfi smoothed transport velocity} as part of the regularised convective nonlinearity. The LANSα-\alpha principle extends the Leray formulation in a natural way in which a {\bfi filtered Kelvin circulation theorem}, incorporating the smoothed transport velocity, is explicitly satisfied. These regularisation principles give rise to implied subgrid closures which will be applied in large eddy simulation of turbulent mixing. Comparison with filtered direct numerical simulation data, and with predictions obtained from popular dynamic eddy-viscosity modelling, shows that these mathematical regularisation models are considerably more accurate, at a lower computational cost.Comment: 42 pages, 12 figure

    Long-Term Alendronate Use Not without Consequences?

    A previously unknown side effect of biphosphonate use is emerging. In a specific patient group on long term biphosphonate therapy stress femur fractures seem to occur. The typical presentation consists of prodromal pain in the affected leg and/or a discrete cortical thickening on the lateral side of the femur in conventional radiological examination or the presentation with a spontaneous transverse subtrochanteric femur with typical features. We present three cases of this stress fracture in patients on bisphosphonate therapy. One of these patients suffered a bilateral femur fracture of the same type. In our opinion, in patients on bisphosphonate therapy who present with a spontaneous femur fracture, seizing therapy is advisable. In bilateral cases preventive nailing should be considered

    Bias-induced threshold voltages shifts in thin-film organic transistors

    An investigation into the stability of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) transistors based on alpha-sexithiophene is reported. In particular, the kinetics of the threshold voltage shift upon application of a gate bias has been determined. The kinetics follow stretched-hyperbola-type behavior, in agreement with the formalism developed to explain metastability in amorphous-silicon thin-film transistors. Using this model, quantification of device stability is possible. Temperature-dependent measurements show that there are two processes involved in the threshold voltage shift, one occurring at Tapproximate to220 K and the other at Tapproximate to300 K. The latter process is found to be sample dependent. This suggests a relation between device stability and processing parameters. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics

    Effects of Short-Range Correlations in (e,e'p) reactions and nuclear overlap functions

    A study of the effects of short-range correlations over the (e,e'p) reaction for low missing energy in closed shell nuclei is presented. We use correlated, quasi-hole overlap functions extracted from the asymptotic behavior of the one-body density matrix, containing central correlations of Jastrow type, up to first-order in a cluster expansion, and computed in the very high asymptotic region, up to 100 fm. The method to extract the overlap functions is checked in a simple shell model, where the exact results are known. We find that the single-particle wave functions of the valence shells are shifted to the right due to the short-range repulsion by the nuclear core. The corresponding spectroscopic factors are reduced only a few percent with respect to the shell model. However, the (e,e'p) response functions and cross sections are enhanced in the region of the maximum of the missing momentum distribution due to short-range correlations.Comment: 45 pages, 15 figure

    Short-range and tensor correlations in the 16^{16}O(e,e'pn) reaction

    The cross sections for electron induced two-nucleon knockout reactions are evaluated for the example of the 16^{16}O(e,e'pn)14^{14}N reaction leading to discrete states in the residual nucleus 14^{14}N. These calculations account for the effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations and include the contributions of two-body meson exchange currents as the pion seagull, pion in flight and the isobar current contribution. The effects of short-range as well as tensor correlations are calculated within the framework of the coupled cluster method employing the Argonne V14 potential as a model for a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The relative importance of correlation effects as compared to the contribution of the meson exchange currents depends on the final state of the residual nucleus. The cross section leading to specific states, like e.g. the ground state of 14^{14}N, is rather sensitive to the details of the correlated wave function.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures include

    LAPW frozen-phonon calculation, shell model lattice dynamics and specific-heat measurement of SnO

    An ab-initio Linear Augmented Plane-Wave (LAPW) calculation of the zone-centered phonon frequencies of SnO has been performed. Eg_g symmetry has been ascribed to the mode observed at 113 cm1^{-1} in Raman measurements, discarding a previous B1g_{1g} assignement. The other phonon modes measured by Raman spectroscopy are also well reproduced. A new shell-model has also been developed, that gives good agreement of the zone-centered frequencies compared to the measured data and the LAPW results. Specific heat measurements have been performed between 5 K and 110 K. Computation of the specific heat and the M\"{o}ssbauer recoilless fraction with the improved shell-model shows a good agreement with the experimental data as a function of temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure. to appear in Phys.     Longitudinal Network Changes and Conversion to Cognitive Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis

    OBJECTIVE: To characterize functional network changes related to conversion to cognitive impairment in a large sample of MS patients over a period of 5 years. METHODS: 227 MS patients and 59 healthy controls (HCs) of the Amsterdam MS cohort underwent neuropsychological testing and resting-state fMRI at two time points (time-interval 4.9±0.9 years). At both baseline and follow-up, patients were categorized as cognitively preserved (CP, N=123), mildly impaired (MCI, Z<-1.5 on ≥2 cognitive tests, N=32) or impaired (CI, Z<-2 on ≥2 tests, N=72) and longitudinal conversion between groups was determined. Network function was quantified using eigenvector centrality, a measure of regional network importance, which was computed for individual resting-state networks at both time-points. RESULTS: Over time, 18.9% of patients converted to a worse phenotype; 22/123 CP patients (17.9%) converted from CP to MCI, 10/123 from CP to CI (8.1%) and 12/32 MCI patients converted to CI (37.5%). At baseline, DMN centrality was higher in CI compared to controls (P=.05). Longitudinally, ventral attention network (VAN) importance increased in CP, driven by stable CP and CP-to-MCI converters (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Of all patients, 19% worsened in their cognitive status over five years. Conversion from intact cognition to impairment is related to an initial disturbed functioning of the VAN, then shifting towards DMN dysfunction in CI. As the VAN normally relays information to the DMN, these results could indicate that in MS, normal processes crucial for maintaining overall network stability are progressively disrupted as patients clinically progress

    A model for two-proton emission induced by electron scattering

    A model to study two-proton emission processes induced by electron scattering is developed. The process is induced by one-body electromagnetic operators acting together with short-range correlations, and by two-body Δ\Delta currents. The model includes all the diagrams containing a single correlation function. A test of the sensitivity of the model to the various theoretical inputs is done. An investigation of the relevance of the Δ\Delta currents is done by changing the final state angular momentum, excitation energy and momentum transfer. The sensitivity of the cross section to the details of the correlation function is studied by using realistic and schematic correlations. Results for 12^{12}C, 16^{16}O and 40^{40}Ca nuclei are presented.Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, 3 table

    External quality assessment of trans-European multicentre antigen determinations (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and its type 1 inhibitor (PAI-1) in human breast cancer tissue extracts.

    High levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) in breast cancer tissue extracts have been associated with rapid disease progression. In these studies, different enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits have been applied for the quantification, and consequently the ranges of uPA and PAI-1 levels reported differ considerably. Therefore, the Receptor and Biomarker Study Group (RBSG) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) and a consortium of the BIOMED-1 project 'Clinical Relevance of Proteases in Tumor Invasion and Metastasis' initiated three collaborative between-laboratory assessment trials aimed at controlling uPA and PAI-1 antigen analyses. For this purpose, two control preparations were produced from different sources: pooled human breast cancer specimens (QC-240893) and human breast cancer xenografts raised in nude mice (QC-101094). The lyophilized preparations were stable for prolonged times (at least 3 and 27 months respectively) at 4 degrees C. Furthermore, a good parallelism following dilution was found for uPA and PAI-1. The data from QC trial no. 1 clearly indicated that acceptable between-laboratory coefficients of variation (CVs) for uPA (<8.2%) and PAI-1 (<16.6%) in QC-240893 could be achieved when the same type of ELISA kit (American Diagnostica) was used. From the second trial, in which ten EORTC laboratories each received five identical lyophilized QC-101094 samples, it appeared that the within-laboratory variations for uPA and PAI-1 determinations obtained by 'experienced' laboratories were lower (<12.9%) than those from non-experienced laboratories (<36.4%). In a third QC trial, five BIOMED-1 laboratories, all of which employed ELISA procedures for uPA and PAI-1, participated in six subsequent quality assessment rounds receiving five samples of QC-101094. Although for each laboratory the within-run CVs for uPA as well as for PAI-1 were low (<7.8%), the between-run CVs were found to be considerably higher (up to 56.2% for uPA and to 27.6% for PAI-1). Consequently, because of the different ELISA formats used, the absolute analyte values measured in the different laboratories varied substantially. The use of 'common external standards' in the different ELISAs resulted in a significant reduction of the between-laboratory CVs from 61.3% to 15.7% (uPA) and from 42.1% to 19.1% (PAI-1). The present data demonstrate that in multicentre studies the same ELISA kit should be used, and that external quality assurance (QA) is mandatory. Furthermore, it appears from the present study that standardization of the protein assay as a tissular parameter is imperative
