“Proceedings in Marine Biology” is an international journal publishing original research by graduate students on all aspects of marine biology. Subjects covered include: ecological surveys and population studies of oceanic, coastal and shore communities; physiology and experimental biology; taxonomy, morphology and life history of marine animals and plants. Papers are also published on techniques em - ployed at sea for sampling, recording, capture and observation of marine organisms.Zeitschrift zur Kursabschlussreise der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Deutschland) im Bereich Elektronenmikroskopie.Peer Reviewe

Thinking about climate change: young people from Ladakh responding to global warming. An explorative study

Understanding the response of young people towards climate change can help us creating sustainable societies. India represents 17,5% of the world’s population and thus has a major potential of anthropogenic impact on global emissions. This article introduces sections of an empirical study on climate change response of young people in India, exemplarily in the sensitive Himalayan ecosystem of Ladakh. In a qualitative study with an ethnographic approach in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, group discussions with students aged 15-18 have been conducted and analyzed with the documentary method. The results indicate that for them, an active response occurs to a greater extend out of reflection and knowledge and following personal idols than out of visceral emotional response to the threats of climate change

During a survey in September 2010 in Tjärnö, Sweden, we examined differences in the occurrence of the barnacle Semibalanus balanoides at rocky shores. We sought to proof whether there were differences in the density of S. balanoides in habitats depending either on wave energy or on orientation of the rocks facing north and south respectively. Data analysis showed no differences in occurrence of the barnacles depending on wave energy in the habitat. In contrast there is a significant difference between examined rock faces with opposite orientation. Habitats with northerly orientation harboured greatly more individuals of S. balanoides than southerly orientated habitats. These results indicate that several factors influence the occurrence of barnacles in habitats connected to orientation. We suggest that there is a correlation between solar exposure, which influences thermal stress and the risk of desiccation and the frequency of occurrence of S. balanoides. Peer Reviewe

Facing Crises of Unsustainability: Creating and Holding Safe Enough Spaces for Transformative Learning in Higher Education for Sustainable Development

The multiple crises of unsustainability are provoking increasing stress and unpleasant emotions among students. If higher education is to fulfill its mission to support transformation processes toward sustainable development, it must adapt its pedagogical approaches to help students deepen their critical thinking and empower them to engage in these transformation processes. For this reason, emotions – which can also prevent critical thinking – should be carefully addressed within transformative learning journeys. However, these journeys are themselves challenging for learners and educators. They push them to abandon stable meaning perspectives, causing feelings of incoherence and tension. Learners need safe enough spaces to navigate these situations of uncertainty. The central questions of this manuscript are: What is meant by safe enough spaces? How can learners, educators, and higher education institutions create and hold such spaces? These questions are explored on three different levels: (1) the intrapersonal level, (2) the interpersonal level, and (3) the organizational and systemic level of discourses in higher education. For the intrapersonal level, perspectives inspired by neurobiology are used to discuss reaction patterns of our autonomous nervous system and present insights into stress development. Learners should feel bodily safe when engaging in transformative learning processes. This is supported by balancing the challenges learners face with the resources they have. For the interpersonal level, the manuscript argues that focusing solely on rational discourse is insufficient to support safe enough spaces for transformative learning. We call for a culture of edifying conversations supported by respectful relationships among learners, as they are more adequate for regaining self-direction. For the organizational and intertwined systemic level, the ambition is followed to make higher education institutions offer learning environments that feel safe enough for all involved. However, as these institutions are strongly influenced by dynamics of economization and competition, they do not necessarily empower learners to challenge and disrupt unsustainable and neoliberal discourses. The manuscript explores how learners and educators can cultivate engaged critique by acknowledging their own embeddedness in neoliberal dynamics and opening up so-called transformative spaces for institutional change. Finally, recommendations for educational practices in higher education for sustainable development are offered

Sustainability-oriented transformative learning and teaching in higher education: eight propositions on challenges and approaches

To contribute to sustainability transformations, learning and teaching at higher education institutions must become trans-formative. A group of experts met for a one-day workshop organized by the Swiss Academic Society for Environmental Research and Ecology (saguf) in December 2019 to discuss the challenges of sustainability-oriented transformative learning and teaching in higher education, and to explore approaches that can be used to meet these challenges. This paper presents key findings from the discussion, set up in eight pro-positions
