    Listening strategies employed by non-English department students

    Language learning strategy is one of the influential aspects for students’ success in learning a language. Basically, language learning strategies are closely related to students taking language-related department. However, students from non-English Department also have the indication of using the strategies since English is one of the subjects taught in the curriculum. Thus this study aims to (1) identify what strategies are used by non-English Department students in Listening class and (2) describes to how the use of strategies influence students listening achievement. This study is a qualitative descriptive study with second-semester students from Governmental Science Department as the research subject. A questionnaire, observation, and documentation are used to collect the data. After analyzing the data, it was found that some strategies are used by non-English department students in their Listening subject, namely memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, and social strategies. Moreover, the students use those strategies in moderate level. Thus, a comparison between the level of strategies use and students’ listening scores is made to describe to what extends the use of strategies influence students’ achievements

    Language learning strategies refers to the students’ ways in learning to help them master the foreign language they are learning in. They may be old theme in educational study, but still considered as one of working tools to fill in the gap between what students know and what students need to know. The uses of language learning strategies are necessary to be recognized by teachers for EFL learning development. This present article aims to explore the matter of language learning strategies, what makes them important, and how to promote them in learning. Learning strategies become one of influential aspects of successful learning along side with the teaching methods or techniques used by teachers since it is used as students’ secret weapon to assist them in learning. Therefore, focusing on students’ learning strategies is necessary since it can create autonomous learning atmosphere, can stimulate students to be proficient language users, and can stimulate teacher to develop better the language tasks or activities. Therefore, teachers are required to promote the use of learning strategies by identifying and analyzing the strategies used by students in their learning process, and then integrating the use of strategies in teaching learning process.     Plagiarism among academicians has been a popular issue in Indonesia for the last five years. Some people argue that plagiarism occurs due to pressure of work to get certain level of academic degree. Another opinion claims that it is due to incapability of writing an academic paper. Plagiarism is definitely unacceptable and not tolerated in any context. Writing an academic paper is about producing a masterpiece. An academic writing should be given a high appreciation to boost positive motivation for academicians to write and publish their research papers. A lot of efforts have been conducted by institutions to avoid plagiarism, such as giving academic writing lectures and citation training, and checking papers using plagiarism checker tools. However, plagiarism still has its popularity among academicians including students and lecturers. For this reason, it is interested to study how those academicians perceive plagiarism. We specify the study by subjecting the research for university student. We investigate students’ behavior towards plagiarism. Thirty-five students of a private university in Ponorogo, Indonesia are purposively taken as sample of the study and they are interviewed to gain the data. The results of data analysis are discussed with related literatures to draw the conclusions.&nbsp

    High School Students’ Foreign Language Acquisition and Their English Achievement

    This present study aims to examine language proficiency levels of high school students in particular assessment form and describe how such level of skills is appropriately matched for particular level of learners. While a proper language literacy investigation may be biased to perception that it can fairly measures students’ comprehension, Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories view that learner’s age may influence how they acquire a new language. In responding to such issue, this observational study seeks for the information through document observation on students’ scores of an English test conducted by the school as the main data. This observation allows the researchers to analyze the scores and describe it according to justified language competency and language acquisition. The data are classified and clarified by underpinning the theories related to the issues. The result showed that senior high school students generally obtain average scores that allow them to be categorized as Minimal and Basic level of proficiency. As per this level, the justification of language acquisition reveals that the students are included in pre-production and early production stage. Students in this stage are considered able to have average competency, especially in receptive English

    DEVELOPING ENGLISH MATERIALS FOR EFL LEARNERS AT ISLAMIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

    The purpose of this research was to develop an EFL course book for the first semester learners at the Islamic junior high school in Indonesia. The material development includes some procedures of need analysis, material development, expert validation, material revision, try-out and final revision. Based on the results of questionnaires distributed to 106-second graders, the interviews done to the teachers and field notes taken from a document of the syllabus, this research revealed that most of the students and English teachers require English instructional materials embracing religious and general knowledge. After validated by the experts and tried-out to the students, this research finally produced English materials that were supplemented by a teacher‟s guide, student‟s worksheets and a CD containing listening materials
