    Promoting the Wellness of Physician-Residents: Counselor-Delivered Coaching

    Current studies on coaching have largely been process- and outcomes-oriented while lacking a firm theoretical foundation on which to base skills and techniques. Coaching has been utilized in many settings in order to address employee work attitude and well-being. This article explores the effects of counselor-delivered coaching on the wellness of physician-residents. Counselors are trained in many of the skills that organically apply to coaching, and medical education programs can benefit from counselor-facilitated coaching as part of their graduate medical education program. Counselor-delivered coaching also can help residents reduce common stresses, mitigate negative patient outcomes, and avoid burnout. This increase in physician wellness is likely to result in decreased medical errors. For these reasons, the authors explore the use of basic counseling techniques in the context of coaching sessions involving medical school educators and residents, thereby bridging the gap between coaching and counseling. Counselor-delivered coaching may be a valuable resource for reducing physician burnout. Therefore, medical schools and medical practices should consider developing and including counselor-delivered coaching to improve physicians’ quality of life and thus, in turn, patient results. Findings from this study support future data-driven studies of counselor-delivered coaching, training opportunities for counselor education programs, and an evolution of coaching techniques

    Characterization of the near-Earth Asteroid 2002NY40

    In August 2002, the near-Earth asteroid 2002 NY40, made its closest approach to the Earth. This provided an opportunity to study a near-Earth asteroid with a variety of instruments. Several of the telescopes at the Maui Space Surveillance System were trained at the asteroid and collected adaptive optics images, photometry and spectroscopy. Analysis of the imagery reveals the asteroid is triangular shaped with significant self-shadowing. The photometry reveals a 20-hour period and the spectroscopy shows that the asteroid is a Q-type

    Comparison of Campylobacter Levels in Crops and Ceca of Broilers at Slaughter

    considerable fraction of the poultry carcasses becomes contaminated with Campylobacter by cross-contamination from the digestive tract of colonized broilers at slaughter. Campylobacter in the crop may serve as a possible source of cross-contamination, because the crop may contain high numbers of Campylobacter and is more likely to rupture during the slaughtering process than intestines. In this study, the correlation between Campylobacter colonization levels in crop and cecum was assessed in 48 broilers of 31 days of age. In addition, the effect of drinking water supplemented with 0.2% volatile fatty acid (VFA) on these Campylobacter colonization levels was studied. No correlation between crop and cecal colonization levels was found (rho = 0.09; P = 0.71), indicating that future studies on cross-contamination should include an examination of not only cecal colonization levels but also crop colonization levels. Supplementation of drinking water with VFA did not result in a significant reduction of colonization levels in either the crop (P = 0.50) or the ceca (P = 0.92), indicating that this is not an effective measure to reduce cross-contamination at slaughter

    Structural and transcriptional analyses of a purine nucleotide-binding protein from Pyrococcus furiosus: A component of a novel, membrane-bound multiprotein complex unique to this hyperthermophilic archaeon

    The open-reading frame PF0895 in the genome of the hyperthermophilic archaeon, Pyrococcus furiosus, encodes a 206-residue protein (MR 23,152). The structure of the recombinant protein was solved by single isomorphous replacement with anomalous scattering (SIRAS) using a mercury derivative. It has been refined to 1.70 Å with a crystallographic R and Rfree values of 19.7% and 22.3%, respectively. The PF0895 structure is similar to those of the ATP binding cassettes observed in the ABC transporter family. However, bioinformatics and molecular analyses indicate that PF0895 is not part of the expected five-gene operon that encodes a typical prokaryotic solute-binding ABC transporter. Rather, transcriptional profiling data show that PF0895 is part of a novel four-gene operon (PF0895-PF0896-PF0897-PF0897.1) where only PF0895 has homologs in other organisms. Interestingly, from genome analysis, P. furiosus itself contains a second version of this complex, encoded by PF1090-PF1093. From the structural studies we can only conclude that one of the subunits of this novel membrane complex, PF0895, and its homolog PF1090, likely bind a purine nucleotide. PF0895 is therefore predicted to be part of a membrane-bound multiprotein complex unrelated to ABC transporters that is so far unique to P. furiosus. It appears to play a role in the stress response, as its expression is down regulated when the organism is subjected to cold-shock, where cells are transferred from 95°C, near the optimal growth temperature, to 72°C, near the minimal growth temperature. The related PF1090-containing operon is unaffected by cold-shock and is independently regulated. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media B.V

    Quantifying Transmission of Campylobacter spp. among Broilers

    Campylobacter species are frequently identified as a cause of human gastroenteritis, often from eating or mishandling contaminated poultry products. Quantitative knowledge of transmission of Campylobacter in broiler flocks is necessary, as this may help to determine the moment of introduction of Campylobacter in broiler flocks more precisely. The aim of this study was to determine the transmission rate parameter in broiler flocks. Four experiments were performed, each with four Campylobacter-inoculated chicks housed with 396 contact chicks per group. Colonization was monitored by regularly testing fecal samples for Campylobacter. A mathematical model was used to quantify the transmission rate, which was determined to be 1.04 new cases per colonized chick per day. This would imply that, for example, in a flock of 20,000 broilers, the prevalence of Campylobacter would increase from 5% to 95% within 6 days after Campylobacter introduction. The model and the estimated transmission rate parameter can be used to develop a suitable sampling scheme to determine transmission in commercial broiler flocks, to estimate whether control measures can reduce the transmission rate, or to estimate when Campylobacter was introduced into a colonized broiler flock on the basis of the time course of transmission in the flock

    Chemoenzymatic synthesis of GDP-l-fucose and the Lewis X glycan derivatives

    Lewis X (Lex)-containing glycans play important roles in numerous cellular processes. However, the absence of robust, facile, and cost-effective methods for the synthesis of Lex and its structurally related analogs has severely hampered the elucidation of the specific functions of these glycan epitopes. Here we demonstrate that chemically defined guanidine 5′-diphosphate-β-l-fucose (GDP-fucose), the universal fucosyl donor, the Lex trisaccharide, and their C-5 substituted derivatives can be synthesized on preparative scales, using a chemoenzymatic approach. This method exploits l-fucokinase/GDP-fucose pyrophosphorylase (FKP), a bifunctional enzyme isolated from Bacteroides fragilis 9343, which converts l-fucose into GDP-fucose via a fucose-1-phosphate (Fuc-1-P) intermediate. Combining the activities of FKP and a Helicobacter pylori α1,3 fucosyltransferase, we prepared a library of Lex trisaccharide glycans bearing a wide variety of functional groups at the fucose C-5 position. These neoglycoconjugates will be invaluable tools for studying Lex-mediated biological processes

    The sharing economy can be understood as a web of markets in which individuals exchange goods and services. Market exchange is typically based on transactions mediated by a digital platform operated by an organization (Mair and Reischauer 2017). The multiple legal forms, orientations, and modes of compensation these organizations adopt combined with the broad range of markets including food, tool, and ride-sharing exemplify the potential of the sharing economy to nurture alternative forms of organizing with social purpose (Mair and Rathert forthcoming) to affect the economy, society, and the environment in new ways (Frenken and Schor 2017)
