Is exponential gravity a viable description for the whole cosmological history?
Here we analysed a particular type of gravity, the so-called
exponential gravity which includes an exponential function of the Ricci scalar
in the action. Such term represents a correction to the usual Hilbert-Einstein
action. By using Supernovae Ia, Barionic Acoustic Oscillations, Cosmic
Microwave Background and data, the free parameters of the model are well
constrained. The results show that such corrections to General Relativity
become important at cosmological scales and at late-times, providing an
alternative to the dark energy problem. In addition, the fits do not determine
any significant difference statistically with respect to the CDM
model. Finally, such model is extended to include the inflationary epoch in the
same gravitational Lagrangian. As shown in the paper, the additional terms can
reproduce the inflationary epoch and satisfy the constraints from Planck data.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, analysis extended, version published in EPJ
Co-movements in commodity prices: a note based on network analysis
This paper analyses co-movements in a wide group of commodity prices during the time period 1992-2010. Our methodological approach is based on the correlation matrix and the networks inside. Through this approach we are able to summarize global interaction and interdependence, capturing the existing heterogeneity in the degrees of synchronization between commodity prices. Our results produce two main findings: (a) we do not observe a persistent increase in the degree of co-movement of the commodity prices in our time sample, however from mid-2008 to the end of 2009 co-movements almost doubled when compared with the average correlation; (b) we observe three groups of commodities which have exhibited similar price dynamics (metals, oil and grains and oilseeds) and which have increased their degree of co-movement during the sampled period. Searching for Dark Matter Annihilation in the Smith High-Velocity Cloud
Recent observations suggest that some high-velocity clouds may be confined by
massive dark matter halos. In particular, the proximity and proposed dark
matter content of the Smith Cloud make it a tempting target for the indirect
detection of dark matter annihilation. We argue that the Smith Cloud may be a
better target than some Milky Way dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies and use
gamma-ray observations from the Fermi Large Area Telescope to search for a dark
matter annihilation signal. No significant gamma-ray excess is found coincident
with the Smith Cloud, and we set strong limits on the dark matter annihilation
cross section assuming a spatially-extended dark matter profile consistent with
dynamical modeling of the Smith Cloud. Notably, these limits exclude the
canonical thermal relic cross section () for dark matter masses GeV annihilating via the or channels for certain assumptions of the dark matter
density profile; however, uncertainties in the dark matter content of the Smith

Assessing Child Obesity and Physical Activity in a Hard-to-Reach Population in California's Central Valley, 2012-2013.
IntroductionIn California's agricultural Central Valley, the rate of childhood obesity is higher than the national average. Adequate physical activity contributes to obesity prevention and its assessment is useful to evaluate the impact of interventions.MethodsNiños Sanos, Familia Sana (Healthy Children, Healthy Family [NSFS]) uses community-based participatory research to implement an intervention program to reduce childhood obesity among people of Mexican origin in the Central Valley. Anthropometric measurements were conducted on more than 650 children enrolled in NSFS. Physical activity data from a subgroup of children aged 4 to 7 years (n = 134) were collected via a wearable accelerometer.ResultsChildren were classified on the basis of age and sex-adjusted body mass index as healthy weight (57.7%); overweight (19.3%), or obese (23%). Logistic regression showed that moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was associated with a child's likelihood of having a healthy BMI (odds ratio: 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.05; P = .017).ConclusionNSFS's community-based participatory approach resulted in successful use of a commercial electronic device to measure physical activity quantity and quality in this hard-to-reach population. Promotion of adequate daily MVPA is an appropriate and necessary component of NSFS's childhood obesity prevention strategy
