Re-Think Russian Investment in Southern Africa

    Get PDF
Russia’s direct investment of about USD 3 billon in Southern Africa over the past decade has placed before the country’s government and corporate sector two choices in the accelerating race among foreign investors into Africa. The first choice is to follow the established path of direct investment from developed economies that has, in the words of a famous African leader Walter Rodney, ‘underdeveloped Africa’ and involved a serious negative environmental impact. The second choice is one that corresponds with the former Soviet Union’s policy of mutually advantageous cooperation with Africa. In the current context, this will prove possible only through joint cooperation to achieve environmental sustainability and economic diversification requiring long-term planning and innovation. The purpose of this interdisciplinary empirical research paper is to investigate the current and future state of environmental practices in joint ventures between Russia and Southern Africa as compared with other patterns of cooperation among emerging market economies.Russia, FDI, investment, Southern Africa, SADC, sustainable development, leapfrogging development, natural resources

My Books: Creating Bilingual Worlds for Children

In my fourth semester of graduate school, I wrote and illustrated my first, full, bilingual, 32-page children’s picture book – What do you like/ Що тобі подобається? I have since continued to explore and pursue the social aspects and influences of nationalistic conflict among the population of war-torn Ukraine. These books express my hope and confidence in a new generation, especially in the immigrant community. The cultural exposure from my youth, yielding autobiographic experiences, as well as observations of a new culture, are prominent in my work. The bilingual aspect of my books is central to my work in general – Ukrainian points to the audience I portray, and English, an international language, reflects the audience I aim to reach

Cyanooxime Inhibitors of Carbonyl Reductase and Methods of Using Said Inhibitors in Treatments Involving Anthracyclines

    Get PDF
Compositions of matter for treating cancer patients are used to prevent or limit cardiotoxicity during or after treatment with anthracycline drugs, and to prevent or lower resistance to anthracycline drugs, both of which are believed to be caused by the human enzyme carbonyl reductase. Preferred embodiments comprise a pharmaceutical composition comprising compounds having halogenated (or pseudo-halogenated) aryl groups, preferably halogenated (or pseudo-halogenated) arylcyanooximes or phenylcyanooximes and derivatives or analogs thereof, including those comprising --CL or --F, or other substituents on an aryl/phenyl ring. The preferred composition of arylcyanooxime(s) may be administered in a pharmaceutical composition also comprising at least one anthracycline compound, or may be administered separately from the at least one anthracycline compound

Solutions of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Two Potential Wells in Linear/Nonlinear Media

    No full text
In the framework of nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we analytically studied the nonlinear localized states in the system with two potential holes in the cases of linear and nonlinear media in the holes as well as their linear and nonlinear environment. All the possible solutions for the system are found and studied. The frequency dependences of the field amplitudes for all types of possible stationary localized states are obtained

The monograph analyzes environmental practice of transnational corporations (TNCs) at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century. The study investigates into the reasons for differing environmental practices of TNCs thorough the world and in Russia in particular. The author researches both external and internal factors of corporate environmental practices. First, the monograph covers the impact of government environmental regulations on foreign direct investment in host economies and environmental practices of corporations. Second, it is established that environmental performance of a company depends on the stage of its life-cycle, ownership structure, and ‘portfolio’ of technologies and equipment. Conclusions are given as to development of economic leverage of making corporate practices in Russia more environmentally friendly. The book is addressed to economists, environmentalists and everyone interested in the topical issues of Russia’s integration into the global economy and nature conservation
