Quasi-interpolation by means of filter-banks
We consider the problem of approximating a regular function f(t) from its samples, f(nT), taken in a uniform grid. Quasi-interpolation schemes approximate f(t) with a dilated version of a linear combination of shifted versions of a kernel ??(t), specifically fapprox T(t) = ??af[n]??(t/T - n), in a way that the polynomials of degree at most L-1 are recovered exactly. These approximation schemes give order L, i.e., the error is O(TL) where T is the sampling period. Recently, quasi-interpolation schemes using a discrete prefiltering of the samples f(nT) to obtain the coefficients af[n], have been proposed. They provide tight approximation with a low computational cost. In this work, we generalize considering rational filter banks to prefilter the samples, instead of a simple filter. This generalization provides a greater flexibility in the design of the approximation scheme. The upsampling and downsampling ratio r of the rational filter bank plays a significant role. When r = 1, the scheme has similar characteristics to those related to a simple filter. Approximation schemes corresponding to smaller ratios give less approximation quality, but, in return, they have less computational cost and involve less storage load in the syste

Impacts of Crop Residue on Damage by Sugarcane Pests during the Tillering Phase in Argentina
One of the most important recent changes in sugarcane cultural practices in Tucumán, Argentina, is the adoption of the practice of green-cane harvesting, which involves harvesting the sugarcane crop in the absence of burning. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the post-harvest crop residue (also sometimes known as "trash blanket") on Elasmopalpus lignosellus (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Pseudaletia unipuncta Haworth (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) population dynamics in sugarcane. The study was conducted in ratoon crops for 3 growing seasons (2011, 2012, and 2013) and at 3 locations in the state of Tucumán, Argentina. The treatments consisted of rows with the crop residue burned and the crop residue retained. Removal of the crop residue by burning, compared with retention, resulted in significantly greater crop damage by E. lignosellus in all locations and years. In contrast, damage by P. unipuncta was observed exclusively on plots where crop residue was retained. Comparing the pest status of 2 insects, E. lignosellus seems to be more consistently deleterious to sugarcane yield than P. unipuncta, and chemical control of this species is not very effective. Therefore, leaving the crop residue in place seems to be the most appropriate crop management approach, although it is important also to monitor P. unipuncta populations in order to implement control should it be necessary.Fil: Isas, Marcos Gerardo. Carleson-type inequalitites in harmonically weighted Dirichlet spaces
Carleson measures for Harmonically Weighted Dirichlet Spaces are characterized. It is shown a version of a maximal inequality for these spaces. Also, Interpolating Sequences and Closed-Range Composition Operators are studied in this context
Value Investing and Size Effect in the South Korean Stock Market
There are indications that value investing strategies have been able to outperform the overall
market in several countries across the globe. In this article, the specific case of South Korea is analyzed.
It would appear that from a rigorous statistical point of view there are no strong evidence supporting
the outperformance of value stocks versus growth stocks in South Korea, particularly when measured
on a yearly basis. These results were consistent using both MSCI value and growth indexes as well
as constructing portfolios using the P/E, P/B, cash flow per share and average 5-year sales growth.
The statistical tests performed failed to reject for the majority of the years that the monthly returns
come from distributions with different medians. The test yielding rather consistent results on a yearly
basis but for large periods of time (decades) the results were more mixed, pointing in some cases to
value investing outperforming over that very long time frame. It should be noted that the final value
of the portfolios was rather different when using criteria, such as low P/E, typically associated with
value stocks. The tests also failed to reject the hypothesis of different means for the monthly returns
of small, medium and large companies
Identification of Systemic Sclerosis through Machine Learning Algorithms and Gene Expression
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune, chronic disease that remains not well understood.
It is believed that the cause of the illness is a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The
evolution of the illness also greatly varies from patient to patient. A common complication of the
illness, with an associated higher mortality, is interstitial lung disease (ILD). We present in this paper
an algorithm (using machine learning techniques) that it is able to identify, with a 92.2% accuracy,
patients suffering from ILD-SSc using gene expression data obtained from peripheral blood. The
data were obtained from public sources (GEO accession GSE181228) and contains genetic data for
134 patients at an initial stage as well as at a follow up date (12 months later) for 98 of these patients.
Additionally, there are 45 control (healthy) cases. The algorithm also identified 172 genes that might
be involved in the illness. These 172 genes appeared in all the 20 most accurate classification models
among a total of half a million models estimated. Their frequency might suggest that they are related
to the illness to some degree. The proposed algorithm, besides differentiating between control and
patients, was also able to distinguish among different variants of the illness (diffuse variants). This
can have a significance from a treatment point of view. The different type of variants have a different
