Optomechanical coupling in photonic crystal supported nanomechanical waveguides
We report enhanced optomechanical coupling by embedding a nano-mechanical
beam resonator within an optical race-track resonator. Precise control of the
mechanical resonator is achieved by clamping the beam between two low-loss
photonic crystal waveguide couplers. The low insertion loss and the rigid
mechanical support provided by the couplers yield both high mechanical and
optical Q-factors for improved signal quality
Nuclear import factors importin alpha and importin beta undergo mutually induced conformational changes upon association
A heterodimer of importin alpha and importin beta accomplishes the nuclear import of proteins carrying classical nuclear localization signals (NLS). The interaction between the two import factors is mediated by the IBB domain of importin alpha and involves an extended recognition surface as shown by X-ray crystallography. Using a combination of biochemical and biophysical techniques we have investigated the formation of the importin beta:IBB domain complex in solution. Our data suggest that upon binding to the IBB domain, importin beta adopts a compact, proteolytically resistant conformation, while simultaneously the IBB domain folds into an alpha helix. We suggest a model to describe how these dual mutually induced conformational changes may orchestrate the nuclear import of NLS cargo in vivo
α-chloralose poisoning in a cat
A five-year-old domestic cat with acute unexplainable neurological signs was presented for postmortem examination. Clinically, the cat showed an acute onset of ataxia, depressed mentation and continuous twitching/ seizure activity in the morning after having been outside overnight. Despite immediate treatment, the cat# progressed within 24 hours to a comatose state, opisthotonus and severe miosis unresponsive to light. Given a poor prognosis, euthanasia was elected. Gross findings were disappointing and consisted of a nonspecific lung oedema and congested lungs and spleen. Surprisingly, within the stomach and intestines, fragments of cockshafers were found. Histological examination confirmed the gross findings and additionally showed evidence of mild brain oedema, but failed to identify a cause for the severe clinical signs. In a final attempt to solve the case, a urine sample was tested for toxic substances and it was found to contain a significant amount of α-chloralose. This finding was unexpected
Effects of state dependent correlations on nucleon density and momentum distributions
The proton momentum and density distributions of closed shell nuclei are
calculated within a model treating short--range correlations up to first order
in the cluster expansion. The validity of the model is verified by comparing
the results obtained with purely scalar correlations with those produced by
finite nuclei Fermi Hypernetted Chain calculations. State dependent
correlations are used to calculate momentum and density distributions of 12C,
16O, 40Ca, and 48Ca, and the effects of their tensor components are studied.Comment: 16 pages, latex, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Pion interaction with the trinucleon up to the eta production threshold
Pion elastic, charge exchange scattering and induced eta production on the
trinucleon systems are investigated in a coupled-channels approach in momentum
space with Fadeev wave functions. The channel is
included using an isobar model with S-, P-, and D-wave resonances. While the
coherent reactions like He(He can be reasonably well reproduced
up to =500 MeV, large discrepancies appear for the incoherent
processes, He(H and He(H at backward
angles and energies above -resonance. In the forward direction the
calculations underestimate the experimental measurements very
close to threshold but agreement with the data improves with increasing pion
energy. Predictions are made for the asymmetries of the various reactions on

Spectral Analysis of the Primary Flight Focal Plane Arrays for the Thermal Infrared Sensor
Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) is a (1) New longwave infrared (10 - 12 micron) sensor for the Landsat Data Continuity Mission, (2) 185 km ground swath; 100 meter pixel size on ground, (3) Pushbroom sensor configuration. Issue of Calibration are: (1) Single detector -- only one calibration, (2) Multiple detectors - unique calibration for each detector -- leads to pixel-to-pixel artifacts. Objectives are: (1) Predict extent of residual striping when viewing a uniform blackbody target through various atmospheres, (2) Determine how different spectral shapes affect the derived surface temperature in a realistic synthetic scene
