    Competition Between Payment Systems: Results

    Get PDF
This paper is the second of two companion pieces. In the first we developed a model of competition between payment systems which extends that of Chakravorti and Roson (2006). Here we turn to the results which can be obtained from the Chakravorti and Roson model, from our extension of it, and from a third family of models which we develop in this paper. We obtain two main sets of findings. First, we shed further light on how competing platforms will set their price level and pricing structure when endogenous multi-homing is allowed on both sides of the market. Our results challenge the general finding in the literature that the greater the propensity of one side of the market to single-home, the more attractive will be the pricing offered to its members by competing platforms. Our results confirm that while this finding generally holds when platforms charge both consumers and merchants on a purely per-transaction basis, it need not hold in the more realistic situation where platforms instead levy flat fees on consumers. Second, we extend findings of Hermalin and Katz (2006) showing that, in certain circumstances, platforms may offer less attractive pricing to the side of the market which holds the choice of payment instrument at the moment of sale.payments policy; two-sided markets

A catalogue of Paschen-line profiles in standard stars

We have assembled an atlas of line profiles of the Paschen Delta line at 10,049 angstroms for the use of stellar modelling. For a few stars we have substituted the Paschen Gamma line at 10,938 angstroms because the Paschen Delta line blends with other features. Most of the targets are standard stars of spectral types from B to M. A few metal-poor stars have been included. For many of the stars we have also observed the Hydrogen Alpha line so as to compare the profiles of lines originating from the meta-stable n=2 level with lines originating from the n=3 level. The greatest difference in line profile is found for high luminosity and cool stars where the departures from LTE in the population of the n=2 level is expected to be the greatest. For a few stars, sample line profiles have been calculated in the LTE approximation to demonstrate the usefulness of the tabulated and displayed catalogue

Cultural Responsiveness, Racial Identity and Academic Success: A Review of Literature

    Get PDF
Commissioned by the Heinz Endowments, this paper reviews the literature on "culturally responsive pedagogy" and the arts. Academic success among African Americans is correlated with education that incorporates racial identity and socialization and a focus on resiliency and culturally relevant concepts. The arts are an ideal venue for such educational programs

Hazardous materials emergency response mobile robot

A simple or unsophisticated robot incapable of effecting straight-line motion at the end of its arm inserts a key held in its end effector or hand into a door lock with nearly straight-line motion by gently thrusting its back heels downwardly so that it pivots forwardly on its front toes while holding its arm stationary. The relatively slight arc traveled by the robot's hand is compensated by a complaint tool with which the robot hand grips the door key. A visible beam is projected through the axis of the hand or gripper on the robot arm end at an angle to the general direction in which the robot thrusts the gripper forward. As the robot hand approaches a target surface, a video camera on the robot wrist watches the beam spot on the target surface fall from a height proportional to the distance between the robot hand and the target surface until the beam spot is nearly aligned with the top of the robot hand. Holes in the front face of the hand are connected through internal passages inside the arm to an on-board chemical sensor. Full rotation of the hand or gripper about the robot arm's wrist is made possible by slip rings in the wrist which permit passage of the gases taken in through the nose holes in the front of the hand through the wrist regardless of the rotational orientation of the wrist
