    The idea for this research came out of an initiative undertaken between my advisor, Joyce Rubin and myself when we reflected, one afternoon, about the benefits of collaborative teaching, over the professional isolation experienced by teachers in Antigua/Barbuda. As educators responsible for staff development we wondered how collaboration between US Skidmore residential students and Skidmore distance learners in Antigua might impact local students\u27 perceptions of learning and classroom life. We also were interested to see if any changes to teachers\u27 delivery of curriculum and instruction would occur as a result of this collaboration

    Engineering a Live UHD Program from the International Space Station

    The first-ever live downlink of Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video from the International Space Station (ISS) was the highlight of a Super Session at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in April 2017. Ultra-High Definition is four times the resolution of full HD or 1080P video. Also referred to as 4K, the Ultra-High Definition video downlink from the ISS all the way to the Las Vegas Convention Center required considerable planning, pushed the limits of conventional video distribution from a space-craft, and was the first use of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) from a space-craft. The live event at NAB will serve as a pathfinder for more routine downlinks of UHD as well as use of HEVC for conventional HD downlinks to save bandwidth. A similar demonstration was conducted in 2006 with the Discovery Channel to demonstrate the ability to stream HDTV from the ISS. This paper will describe the overall work flow and routing of the UHD video, how audio was synchronized even though the video and audio were received many seconds apart from each other, and how the demonstration paves the way for not only more efficient video distribution from the ISS, but also serves as a pathfinder for more complex video distribution from deep space. The paper will also describe how a live event was staged when the UHD video coming from the ISS had a latency of 10+ seconds. In addition, the paper will touch on the unique collaboration between the inherently governmental aspects of the ISS, commercial partners Amazon and Elemental, and the National Association of Broadcasters

    A Study of the Relationships Between Extracurricular Participation in Selected North Carolina High Schools and Student Achievement As Determined By Cumulative Grade Point Average

    The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between high school academic achievement and participation in extracurricular activities. Academic achievement was measured by both weighted and unweighted GPA’s. Data were categorized by four types of participation: athletics, arts, service clubs, and interest clubs. Data were also disaggregated based on gender and ethnic differences. Quantitative research methods were used to collect and analyze data in order to answer the four-research questions related to this study. Non-identifying archived data was collected from the senior classes of three North Carolina High Schools. An ANOVA was conducted to measure the statistical significance between participation in extracurricular activities and GPA and whether or not that relationship differed based upon a student’s gender, ethnicity, and type of participation. The results of the study show that there were statistically significant relationships between academic achievement and participation in extracurricular activities for both weighted and unweighted GPA, except for one subgroup. The subgroup of Other did not show any statistical significance when measuring weighted and unweighted GPA and it’s impact on student achievement. Implications of the study and suggestions for further research are presented

    Using four voices, we created a movie review of Kitchen Stories, a Scandinavian movie ostensibly about a research project, but with layers of meaning extending beyond research into relationships, wider communities, and teaching. As friends and colleagues, our co-authored review/essay allowed each of us room to elaborate numerous themes that can inform and support a variety of researchers and practitioners. This writing also confirmed our belief that contemporary movies can be evocative learning devices for professionals

    Observation of Amounts of Movement Practice Provided during Stroke Rehabilitation

    Objective To investigate how much movement practice occurred during stroke rehabilitation, and what factors might influence doses of practice provided. Design Observational survey of stroke therapy sessions. Setting Seven inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation sites. Participants We observed a convenience sample of 312 physical and occupational therapy sessions for people with stroke. Interventions Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures We recorded numbers of repetitions in specific movement categories and data on potential modifying factors (patient age, side affected, time since stroke, FIM item scores, years of therapist experience). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize amounts of practice. Correlation and regression analyses were used to determine whether potential factors were related to the amount of practice in the 2 important categories of upper extremity functional movements and gait steps. Results Practice of task-specific, functional upper extremity movements occurred in 51% of the sessions that addressed upper limb rehabilitation, and the average number of repetitions/session was 32 (95% confidence interval [CI]=20–44). Practice of gait occurred in 84% of sessions that addressed lower limb rehabilitation and the average number of gait steps/session was 357 (95% CI=296–418). None of the potential factors listed accounted for significant variance in the amount of practice in either of these 2 categories. Conclusions The amount of practice provided during poststroke rehabilitation is small compared with animal models. It is possible that current doses of task-specific practice during rehabilitation are not adequate to drive the neural reorganization needed to promote function poststroke optimally

    Exposing Students to STEM Careers through Hands-on Activities with Drones and Robots

    Autonomous robots have been used in a variety of ways from collecting specimen in hazardous environments to space exploration. These robots can be found in various manufacturing systems as Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs) to transport parts and assemblies throughout the manufacturing system. They have also been used as a vehicle to convey design thinking and other STEM-related concepts in mechanical engineering/mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering/electrical engineering technology, computer science, and computer engineering. Various outreach events have included robotics based activities that engage students in building and programming autonomous robots for the purpose of achieving a specific task. These events are often found in schools in a form of STEM outreach, career days, robotic competitions, or during residential on-campus programs. This paper focuses on three robotics related sessions conducted during a three-day summer residential program for high school students offered at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia during the summer educational program named ODU BLAST. ODU BLAST is part of a Virginia Space Grant Consortium initiative called Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology (BLAST), offered at three different universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia
