    On the Monotonicity of the Generalized Marcum and Nuttall Q-Functions

    Monotonicity criteria are established for the generalized Marcum Q-function, \emph{Q}_{M}, the standard Nuttall Q-function, \emph{Q}_{M,N}, and the normalized Nuttall Q-function, QM,N\mathcal{Q}_{M,N}, with respect to their real order indices M,N. Besides, closed-form expressions are derived for the computation of the standard and normalized Nuttall Q-functions for the case when M,N are odd multiples of 0.5 and M≥NM\geq N. By exploiting these results, novel upper and lower bounds for \emph{Q}_{M,N} and QM,N\mathcal{Q}_{M,N} are proposed. Furthermore, specific tight upper and lower bounds for \emph{Q}_{M}, previously reported in the literature, are extended for real values of M. The offered theoretical results can be efficiently applied in the study of digital communications over fading channels, in the information-theoretic analysis of multiple-input multiple-output systems and in the description of stochastic processes in probability theory, among others.Comment: Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, August 2009.     Global Education in Second Language Teaching

    This article paints an optimistic picture of the role we second language teachers can play not only in improving our students' language proficiency but also in infusing global education into our classes as we join with our students to address global concerns, such as peace, prosperity, environmental protection, and human rights. The article is divided into four parts. The first part describes global education and identifies organizations of second language educators participating in global education. The second part of the article focuses on two key areas of global education: peace education and environmental education. Next, we address questions that second language teachers frequently ask about including global education in their teaching. Lastly, we supply lists of print and electronic resources on peace education and environmental education

    X-ray spectrum of the high polarization quasar PKS 1510-089

    We present results on the X-ray spectra of the radio-loud, high-polarization quasar, PKS 1510-089, based on new data obtained using ASCA, and from archival ROSAT data. The X-ray spectrum obtained by ASCA is unusually hard, with the photon index=1.30+-0.06, while the (non-simultaneous) ROSAT data indicate a steeper spectrum (1.9+-0.3). The X-ray flux at 1 keV is within 10% during both observations. A break in the underlying continuum at about 0.7 keV is suggested. Flat X-ray spectra seem to be the characteristic of high polarization quasars, and their spectra also appear to be harder than that of the other radio-loud but low-polarization quasars. The multiwavelength spectrum of PKS 1510-089 is similar to many other gamma-ray blazars, suggesting the emission is dominated by that from a relativistic jet. A big blue-bump is also seen in its multiwavelength spectrum, suggesting the presence of a strong thermal component as well.Comment: 19 pages (Latex + 5 ps figures), Accpeted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, December 20, 199

    Effects of atomic short-range order on the properties of perovskite alloys in their morphotropic phase boundary

    The effects of atomic short-range order on the properties of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 alloy in its morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) are predicted by combining first-principles-based methods and annealing techniques. Clustering is found to lead to a compositional expansion of this boundary, while the association of unlike atoms yields a contraction of this region. Atomic short-range order can thus drastically affect properties of perovskite alloys in their MPB, by inducing phase transitions.     Evidence for an Intense Neutrino Flux during rr-Process Nucleosynthesis?

    We investigate the possibility that neutrino capture on heavy nuclei competes with beta decay in the environment where the rr-Process elements are synthesized. We find that such neutrino capture is not excluded by existing abundance determinations. We show that inclusion of significant neutrino capture on the (neutron number) N=82 waiting point nuclei can allow the inferred abundances of these species to provide a good fit to steady weak (beta decay plus neutrino capture) flow equilibrium. In fact, for particular choices of neutrino flux conditions, this fit is improved over the case where nuclei change their charge by beta decay alone. However, this improved fit can be realized only if neutrino capture plays a negligible role in nuclear decay back toward stability. We discuss the implications of these considerations for current proposed sites and models for rr-Process nucleosynthesis.Comment: 10 pages, plain tex, submitted to ApJ

    The nature of the emission-line nebulae in powerful far-infrared galaxies

    The authors discuss their program of narrow-band (H alpha + (NII)) imaging of a sample of 30 powerful far-infrared galaxies (FIRG's) chosen to have far-infrared spectral energy distributions similar to the prototype FIRG's Arp 220, NGC 3690, NGC 6240, and M82. The emission-line nebulae of these IR color-selected sample (ICSS) galaxies as a class are both impressively large (mean half light radius, r approx. 1.3 Kpc, and mean diameter, D approx. 16 Kpc) and luminous (L sub TOT approx. 10(exp 8) solar lumninosity; uncorrected for internal extinction). The mean total H alpha + (NII) luminosity of the FIRG's is comparable to that found for pairs of optically selected interacting galaxies (Bushouse, Lamb, and Werner 1988), but is a factor of approx. 5 greater than that of isolated spirals (Kennicutt and Kent 1983). Only approx. 25 percent of the nearby (z approx. less than 0.10) FIRG's have morphologies suggesting that large HII-regions contribute significantly to their emission-line appearance. The broad-band morphologies of our IR color-selected galaxies fall into three major categories. Nearly 75 percent are single galaxy systems, with the remaining FIRG's being either multiple nuclei systems, or members of interacting pairs. Since the authors saw few (10 percent) currently interacting FIRG's, yet many (80 percent) with highly distorted continuum morphologies, their IR color criteria may be preferentially selecting galaxies that have undergone highly inelastic, rapidly merging interactions

    Light Element Synthesis in High Entropy Relativistic Flows Associated with Gamma Ray Bursts

    We calculate and discuss the light element freeze-out nucleosynthesis in high entropy winds and fireballs for broad ranges of entropy-per-baryon, dynamic timescales characterizing relativistic expansion, and neutron-to-proton ratios. With conditions characteristic of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) we find that deuterium production can be prodigious, with final abundance values 2H/H approximately 2%, depending on the fireball isospin, late time dynamics, and the effects of neutron decoupling- induced high energy non-thermal nuclear reactions. This implies that there potentially could be detectable local enhancements in the deuterium abundance associated with GRB events.Comment: 14 pages 3 figure
