An investigation to determine the impact of concept mapping on learning in an undergraduate physics course

In recent years extensive research has been carried out to evaluate and highlight the declining number of graduates from science related courses. Following this, several initiatives have been designed and implemented throughout the Republic of Ireland to combat the problem of low retention rates in undergraduate science courses and to introduce the use of more effective instructional methodologies that promote the active role of the learner while also encouraging the facilitative role of the teacher. This paper examines Concept Mapping, one such initiative that has been implemented in the University of Limerick over the last two years. The research presented here is part of a large project that aims to explore and evaluate the potential of Concept Mapping as an educational tool in physics education. This paper, however, sets out to specificallyanswer the following research question: What impact, if any, did Concept Mapping have on four particular aspects of physics learning? All is not well with the evaluation of government programs and projects. Resources available to any society are limited. If governments are to increase the well-being of their citizens, they must be able to select and implement the socially most beneficial projects and policies. But many government agencies lack the expertise to carry out a cost-benefit analysis, or even to commission one. Commercial consultants, on the other hand, often have some analytical expertise, but are not immune from adopting approaches that accommodate the proclivities of their client agencies. In order to increase analytical rigour and methodological consistency, this publication urges the adoption of a ‘belts and braces’ set of protocols for use in project evaluation

Probing Needs Assessment Data in Depth to Target Programs More Effectively

Extension professionals often assess community needs to determine programs and target audiences. Data can be collected through surveys, focus group and individual interviews, meta-analysis, systematic observation, and other methods. Knowledge gaps are identified, and programs are designed to resolve the deficiencies. However, do Extension professionals look deeply enough into the data to identify subgroups that will allow more targeted programs, or are programs based on only superficial analysis? Cluster analysis allows data to reveal demographic patterns and relationships involving survey respondents. It allows Extension professionals to more precisely target program audiences and thus effectively achieve program impacts

Using Gun Blue to Enhance Fingermark Ridge Detail on Ballistic Brass

Brass cartridge cases are the most common type of cartridge case found at crime scenes, but it is not always feasible to obtain identifiable fingermarks on these cartridges. This study evaluates the effectiveness of gun blue as an enhancement method on fingermarks that were deposited on brass metal discs and left to age (2, 7, 14, and 30 days) under different environmental conditions, namely, under dark conditions, under ambient light, and outdoors. Ten different donors (5 males, 5 females) were employed for this study, and their fingermarks (60 per donor) were enhanced with gun blue solution (50% v/v). It was possible to enhance aged fingermarks (natural and groomed) that had been deposited on the brass metal discs to an identifiable level, with the fingermarks left outdoors being the most challenging to enhance. The feasibility of enhancing fingermarks on fired brass cartridges shot from different firearms was also assessed. Despite favorable results being achieved on fired brass cartridge cases, more research is required to assess whether reliable enhancement can be achieved on fired cartridge cases under real crime scene conditions
