    Neutrino Pair Emission from Hot Nuclei During Stellar Collapse

    We present shell-model calculations showing that residual interaction-induced configuration mixing enhances the rate of neutral current de-excitation of thermally excited nuclei into neutrino-antineutrino pairs. Though our calculations reinforce the conclusions of previous studies that this process is the dominant source of neutrino pairs near the onset of neutrino trapping during stellar collapse, our shell-model result has the effect of increasing the energy of these pairs, possibly altering their role in entropy transport in supernovae.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    Modification of the Brink-Axel Hypothesis for High Temperature Nuclear Weak Interactions

    We present shell model calculations of electron capture strength distributions in A=28 nuclei and computations of the corresponding capture rates in supernova core conditions. We find that in these nuclei the Brink-Axel hypothesis for the distribution of Gamow-Teller strength fails at low and moderate initial excitation energy, but may be a valid tool at high excitation. The redistribution of GT strength at high initial excitation may affect capture rates during collapse. If these trends which we have found in lighter nuclei also apply for the heavier nuclei which provide the principal channels for neutronization during stellar collapse, then there could be two implications for supernova core electron capture physics. First, a modified Brink-Axel hypothesis could be a valid approximation for use in collapse codes. Second, the electron capture strength may be moved down significantly in transition energy, which would likely have the effect of increasing the overall electron capture rate during stellar collapse.Comment: 15 pages, 19 figure

    Illumination uniformity in endoscopic imaging

    Standardised endoscopic digital images were taken and analysed using an image analysis software (National Instruments Vision Assistant version 7.1.1). The luminance plane was extracted and the pixel intensity distribution was determined along a horizontal line at the position of highest average intensity (centroid). The data was exported to MS Excel and the pixel intensity (y-axis) was plotted against pixel position (x-axis). A trendline using a 2nd order polynomial curve was fitted to each data set. The resultant equation for each curve was compared with equations obtained from other images taken under various illumination conditions and settings

    Self-Affinity in the Gradient Percolation Problem

    We study the scaling properties of the solid-on-solid front of the infinite cluster in two-dimensional gradient percolation. We show that such an object is self affine with a Hurst exponent equal to 2/3 up to a cutoff-length proportional to the gradient to the power (-4/7). Beyond this length scale, the front position has the character of uncorrelated noise. Importantly, the self-affine behavior is robust even after removing local jumps of the front. The previously observed multi affinity, is due to the dominance of overhangs at small distances in the structure function. This is a crossover effect.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    A spatially shifted beam approach to subwavelength focusing

    Although negative-refractive-index metamaterials have successfully achieved subwavelength focusing, image resolution is limited by the presence of losses. In this Letter, a metal transmission screen with subwavelength spaced slots is proposed that focuses the near-field beyond the diffraction limit and furthermore, is easily scaled from microwave frequencies to the optical regime. An analytical model based on the superposition of shifted beam patterns is developed that agrees very well with full-wave simulations and is corroborated by experimental results at microwave frequencies.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures.     Roughness of Interfacial Crack Front: Correlated Percolation in the Damage Zone

    We show that the roughness exponent zeta of an in-plane crack front slowly propagating along a heterogeneous interface embeded in a elastic body, is in full agreement with a correlated percolation problem in a linear gradient. We obtain zeta=nu/(1+nu) where nu is the correlation length critical exponent. We develop an elastic brittle model based on both the 3D Green function in an elastic half-space and a discrete interface of brittle fibers and find numerically that nu=1.5, We conjecture it to be 3/2. This yields zeta=3/5. We also obtain by direct numerical simulations zeta=0.6 in excellent agreement with our prediction. This modelling is for the first time in close agreement with experimental observations.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX

    Fracture in Three-Dimensional Fuse Networks

    We report on large scale numerical simulations of fracture surfaces using random fuse networks for two very different disorders. There are some properties and exponents that are different for the two distributions, but others, notably the roughness exponents, seem universal. For the universal roughness exponent we found a value of zeta = 0.62 +/- 0.05. In contrast to what is observed in two dimensions, this value is lower than that reported in experimental studies of brittle fractures, and rules out the minimal energy surface exponent, 0.41 +/- 0.01.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, Postscrip

    Evaluation of Concussion Incidence and Modulating Factors in the 2013-2017 Australian Football League

    The increasing awareness and popularization of concussions in the research realm over the last few years have begun to shed more light on the detrimental effects associated with repetitive head trauma. While the majority of the current literature focuses on the National Football League (NFL) and National Hockey League (NHL), several other high-impact sports have been implementing concussion management protocols to protect their players. The Australian Football League (AFL) is a prime example of a major contact sport that has undertaken recent changes to its concussion assessment and management modalities. We recognize the benefit of reporting potential changes in concussion rates over the 2013-2017 AFL seasons. We were interested in some of the factors not yet evaluated before, which may contribute to the overall concussion incidence such as “style-of-play” factors” (home/away, win/loss, points scored, time of season). We hope the results of this analysis shed light on the mechanisms by which concussion rates can be mitigated across major contact sports

    Iron Homeostasis during Cystic Fibrosis Pulmonary Exacerbation

    BACKGROUND: Hypoferremia is a marker of disease severity in cystic fibrosis (CF). The effect of systemic antibiotics on iron homeostasis during CF pulmonary exacerbation (CFPE) is unknown. Our central hypotheses were that, by the completion of treatment, serum iron would increase, serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and hepcidin-25, two mediators of hypoferremia, would decrease, and sputum iron would decrease. METHODS: Blood and sputum samples were collected from 12 subjects with moderate-to-severe CF (median percentage-predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV(1) %) = 29%; median weight = 56 kg) within 24 hours of starting and completing a course of systemic antibiotics. RESULTS: After treatment, subjects showed median FEV(1) % and body weight improvements of 4.5% and 2.0 kg, respectively (p \u3c 0.05). Median serum iron rose by 2.4 ÎĽmol/L (p \u3c 0.05), but 75% of patients remained hypoferremic. Median serum IL-6 and hepcidin-25 levels fell by 12.1 pg/mL and 37.5 ng/mL, respectively (p \u3c 0.05). Median serum erythropoietin (EPO) and hemoglobin levels were unaffected by treatment. We observed a trend toward lower sputum iron content after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Hypoferremia is a salient characteristic of CFPE that improves with waning inflammation. Despite antibiotic treatment, many patients remain hypoferremic and anemic because of ineffective erythropoiesis
