Chemical mechanical polishing of thin film diamond
The demonstration that Nanocrystalline Diamond (NCD) can retain the superior
Young's modulus (1,100 GPa) of single crystal diamond twinned with its ability
to be grown at low temperatures (<450 {\deg}C) has driven a revival into the
growth and applications of NCD thin films. However, owing to the competitive
growth of crystals the resulting film has a roughness that evolves with film
thickness, preventing NCD films from reaching their full potential in devices
where a smooth film is required. To reduce this roughness, films have been
polished using Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP). A Logitech Tribo CMP tool
equipped with a polyurethane/polyester polishing cloth and an alkaline
colloidal silica polishing fluid has been used to polish NCD films. The
resulting films have been characterised with Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning
Electron Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Root mean square
roughness values have been reduced from 18.3 nm to 1.7 nm over 25 {\mu}m,
with roughness values as low as 0.42 nm over ~ 0.25 {\mu}m. A polishing
mechanism of wet oxidation of the surface, attachment of silica particles and
subsequent shearing away of carbon has also been proposed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
The California Planet Survey IV: A Planet Orbiting the Giant Star HD 145934 and Updates to Seven Systems with Long-Period Planets
We present an update to seven stars with long-period planets or planetary
candidates using new and archival radial velocities from Keck-HIRES and
literature velocities from other telescopes. Our updated analysis better
constrains orbital parameters for these planets, four of which are known
multi-planet systems. HD 24040 b and HD 183263 c are super-Jupiters with
circular orbits and periods longer than 8 yr. We present a previously unseen
linear trend in the residuals of HD 66428 indicative on an additional planetary
companion. We confirm that GJ 849 is a multi-planet system and find a good
orbital solution for the c component: it is a planet in a 15 yr
orbit (the longest known for a planet orbiting an M dwarf). We update the HD
74156 double-planet system. We also announce the detection of HD 145934 b, a planet in a 7.5 yr orbit around a giant star. Two of our stars, HD
187123 and HD 217107, at present host the only known examples of systems
comprising a hot Jupiter and a planet with a well constrained period yr,
and with no evidence of giant planets in between. Our enlargement and
improvement of long-period planet parameters will aid future analysis of

RASSF1A and the rs2073498 Cancer Associated SNP
RASSF1A is one of the most frequently inactivated tumor suppressors yet identified in human cancer. It is pro-apoptotic and appears to function as a scaffolding protein that interacts with a variety of other tumor suppressors to modulate their function. It can also complex with the Ras oncoprotein and may serve to integrate pro-growth and pro-death signaling pathways. A SNP has been identified that is present in approximately 29% of European populations [rs2073498, A(133)S]. Several studies have now presented evidence that this SNP is associated with an enhanced risk of developing breast cancer. We have used a proteomics based approach to identify multiple differences in the pattern of protein/protein interactions mediated by the wild type compared to the SNP variant protein. We have also identified a significant difference in biological activity between wild type and SNP variant protein. However, we have found only a very modest association of the SNP with breast cancer predisposition
Loss of F-box only protein 2 (Fbxo2) disrupts levels and localization of select NMDA receptor subunits, and promotes aberrant synaptic connectivity
NMDA receptors (NMDARs) play an essential role in some forms of synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Therefore, these receptors are highly regulated with respect to their localization, activation, and abundance both within and on the surface of mammalian neurons. Fundamental questions remain, however, regarding how this complex regulation is achieved. Using cell-based models and F-box Only Protein 2 (Fbxo2) knock-out mice, we found that the ubiquitin ligase substrate adaptor protein Fbxo2, previously reported to facilitate the degradation of the NMDAR subunit GluN1 in vitro, also functions to regulate GluN1 and GluN2A subunit levels in the adult mouse brain. In contrast, GluN2B subunit levels are not affected by the loss of Fbxo2. The loss of Fbxo2 results in greater surface localization of GluN1 and GluN2A, together with increases in the synaptic markers PSD-95 and Vglut1. These synaptic changes do not manifest as neurophysiological differences or alterations in dendritic spine density in Fbxo2 knock-out mice, but result instead in increased axo-dendritic shaft synapses. Together, these findings suggest that Fbxo2 controls the abundance and localization of specific NMDAR subunits in the brain and may influence synapse formation and maintenance
The Induction of Autoimmune Arthritis and Sex differences in Mice Impact the Lung Inflammatory Response to Repetitive Inhalant Organic Dust Extract Exposures
Asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD are common adverse respiratory health effects among persons exposed to agriculture organic dust work environments. Occupational inhalant exposures have been increasingly associated with the risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease development, particularly among males. Agriculture workers have increased risk of RA and generalized bone disease. Chronic lung disease is associated with production of characteristic autoantibodies associated with RA (e.g.anti-citrullinated antibodies), even in absence of RA disease. International Coercion, Emulation and Policy Diffusion: Market-Oriented Infrastructure Reforms, 1977-1999
Why do some countries adopt market-oriented reforms such as deregulation, privatization and liberalization of competition in their infrastructure industries while others do not? Why did the pace of adoption accelerate in the 1990s? Building on neo-institutional theory in sociology, we argue that the domestic adoption of market-oriented reforms is strongly influenced by international pressures of coercion and emulation. We find robust support for these arguments with an event-history analysis of the determinants of reform in the telecommunications and electricity sectors of as many as 205 countries and territories between 1977 and 1999. Our results also suggest that the coercive effect of multilateral lending from the IMF, the World Bank or Regional Development Banks is increasing over time, a finding that is consistent with anecdotal evidence that multilateral organizations have broadened the scope of the âconditionalityâ terms specifying market-oriented reforms imposed on borrowing countries. Interfacial electron shuttling processes across KolliphorÂźEL monolayer grafted electrodes
Covalently grafted KolliphorÂźEL (a poly-ethylene-glycol based "transporter molecule" for hydrophobic water-insoluble drugs; MW ca. 2486; diameter ca. 3-5 nm) at the surface of a glassy carbon electrode strongly affects the rate of electron transfer for aqueous redox systems such as Fe(CN)63-/4-. XPS data confirm mono-layer grafting after electrochemical anodisation in pure KolliphorÂźEL. Based on voltammetry and impedance measurements, the charge transfer process for the Fe(CN)63-/4- probe molecule is completely blocked after KolliphorÂźEL grafting and in the absence of a "guest". However, in the presence of low concentrations of suitable ferrocene derivatives as "guests", mediated electron transfer across the mono-layer via a "shuttle mechanism" is observed. The resulting amplification of the ferrocene electroanalytical signal is investigated systematically and compared for 5 ferrocene derivatives. The low concentration electron shuttle efficiency decreases in the sequence dimethylaminomethyl-ferrocene > n-butyl-ferrocene > ferrocene-dimethanol > ferrocene-acetonitrile > ferrocene-acetic acid.</p
Learning From Early Attempts to Generalize Darwinian Principles to Social Evolution
Copyright University of Hertfordshire & author.Evolutionary psychology places the human psyche in the context of evolution, and addresses the Darwinian processes involved, particularly at the level of genetic evolution. A logically separate and potentially complementary argument is to consider the application of Darwinian principles not only to genes but also to social entities and processes. This idea of extending Darwinian principles was suggested by Darwin himself. Attempts to do this appeared as early as the 1870s and proliferated until the early twentieth century. But such ideas remained dormant in the social sciences from the 1920s until after the Second World War. Some lessons can be learned from this earlier period, particularly concerning the problem of specifying the social units of selection or replication
Derivatization of estrogens enhances specificity and sensitivity of analysis of human plasma and serum by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry
AbstractEstrogens circulate at concentrations less than 20pg/mL in men and postmenopausal women, presenting analytical challenges. Quantitation by immunoassay is unreliable at these low concentrations. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LCâMS/MS) offers greater specificity and sometimes greater sensitivity, but ionization of estrogens is inefficient. Introduction of charged moieties may enhance ionization, but many such derivatives of estrogens generate non-specific product ions originating from the âreagentâ group. Therefore an approach generating derivatives with product ions specific to individual estrogens was sought.Estrogens were extracted from human plasma and serum using solid phase extraction and derivatized using 2-fluoro-1-methylpyridinium-p-toluenesulfonate (FMP-TS). Electrospray in positive mode with multiple reaction monitoring using a QTrap 5500 mass spectrometer was used to quantify âFMPâ derivatives of estrogens, following LC separation.Transitions for the FMP derivatives of estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2) were compound specific (m/z 362â238 and m/z 364â128, respectively). The limits of detection and quantitation were 0.2pg on-column and the method was linear from 1â400pg/sample. Measures of intra- and inter-assay variability, precision and accuracy were acceptable (<20%). The derivatives were stable over 24h at 10°C (7â9% degradation). Using this approach, E1 and E2, respectively were detected in human plasma and serum: pre-menopausal female serum (0.5mL) 135â473, 193â722pmol/L; male plasma (1mL) 25â111, 60â180pmol/L and post-menopausal female plasma (2mL), 22â78, 29â50pmol/L.Thus FMP derivatization, in conjunction with LCâMS/MS, is suitable for quantitative analysis of estrogens in low abundance in plasma and serum, offering advantages in specificity over immunoassay and existing MS techniques

Polygenic risk for mental disorders as predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder after mild traumatic brain injury.
Many patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at risk for mental health problems such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The objective of this study was to determine whether the polygenic risk for PTSD (or for related mental health disorders or traits including major depressive disorder [MDD] and neuroticism [NEU]) was associated with an increased likelihood of PTSD in the aftermath of mTBI. We used data from individuals of European ancestry with mTBI enrolled in TRACK-TBI (nâ=â714), a prospective longitudinal study of level 1 trauma center patients. One hundred and sixteen mTBI patients (16.3%) had probable PTSD (PCL-5 score â„33) at 6 months post-injury. We used summary statistics from recent GWAS studies of PTSD, MDD, and NEU to generate polygenic risk scores (PRS) for individuals in our sample. A multivariable model that included age, sex, pre-injury history of mental disorder, and cause of injury explained 7% of the variance in the PTSD outcome; the addition of the PTSD-PRS (and five ancestral principal components) significantly increased the variance explained to 11%. The adjusted odds of PTSD in the uppermost PTSD-PRS quintile was nearly four times higher (aORâ=â3.71, 95% CI 1.80-7.65) than in the lowest PTSD-PRS quintile. There was no evidence of a statistically significant interaction between PTSD-PRS and prior history of mental disorder, indicating that PTSD-PRS had similar predictive utility among those with and without pre-injury psychiatric illness. When added to the model, neither MDD-PRS nor NEU-PRS were significantly associated with the PTSD outcome. These findings show that the risk for PTSD in the context of mTBI is, in part, genetically influenced. They also raise the possibility that an individual's PRS could be clinically actionable if used-possibly with other non-genetic predictors-to signal the need for enhanced follow-up and early intervention; this precision medicine approach needs to be prospectively studied
