During the last year work on the geology of southwestern Iowa has been continued. The different outcrops in the vicinity of Stennett in Montgomery County have been visited, and important information obtained of the stratigraphy and paleonology of the Stennett limestones and the Braddyville and Platte shales. In Fremont County the exposures at Hamburg, McKissicks Grove, Mill Creek, as well as those from Opossum Creek north to Thurman have again been examined, in hopes to definitely locate the break that takes place in the strata between Thurman and the Wilson section

The Paleontology and Stratigraphy of the Upper Carboniferous of Iowa

    Get PDF
The object of this paper is to give the results of field observation and paleontologic study of the Upper Carboniferous of southwestern Iowa, extending over several years, as opportunity offered. It has been necessary that portions of the adjacent states of Missouri and Nebraska be included in this investigation, to complete and confirm the results obtained by studies of the stratigraphy of Iowa. Good exposures of outcrops in Iowa are infrequent and widely scattered; correlations are therefore difficult to make without the information to be derived from the examination of outcrops in adjacent territory

    Chemical Utilization of Aspen

    Get PDF
Chemical utilization of raw materials depends largely on the chemical composition and the chemical and physical properties of the raw materials under consideration. The utilization of wood is no exception to this principle. Thus, a wood having a low percentage of cellulose is uneconomical as a source of wood sugar or pulp for paper; and one of an excessively knotty character is undesirable for chemical conversion Woods having several undesirable characteristics generally fall within the classification of species little used for the purpose. Fortunate! aspen falls outside this class

Rural social survey of Hudson, Orange and Jesup consolidated school districts, Black-hawk and Buchanan Counties, Iowa

    Get PDF
This bulletin contains a detailed survey of the 385 farm homes and farm families living in Hudson, Orange and Jesup consolidated school districts of Blackhawk and Buchanan counties. Farm people are constantly asking two questions. These are: “(1) What can we do to make life on the farm mean more? (2) How can we, with the cooperation of those engaged in the scientific study of rural life, secure a richer and fuller farm life?” But before farm people can find or work out a constructive and satisfactory solution to these questions they must have accurate and first-hand information on two other questions. These are: (1) What have they in their community to work with? and (2 ) What has already been done and what is now being done to make farm life more attractive? Information on, or an answer to these latter questions alone can serve as a practical and scientific basis on which to build a program of action. Individuals and groups of farm people can then work constructively toward making farm life more pleasant
