'Their story is a hard road to hoe': how art-making tackles stigma and builds well-being in young people living regionally
Purpose Remote and regional Australia have comparatively fewer mental health services than their urban counterparts, what is more, mental health remains profoundly stigmatised. This study aims to understand how, if at all, the process of group art-making then publicly displaying the artworks can contribute to stigma reduction for young people (YP) experiencing mental health challenges in regional Australia. Design/methodology/approach Interviews were conducted with six young artists who use regional mental health services and 25 people who viewed their displayed art using a thematic analysis of the coded interview data. Findings Findings of this study demonstrated how art-making as a process increased self-esteem, social interaction and artistic expression; while the viewers experienced an emotional connection to the art. The viewerâs response enhanced YPâs confidence in their abilities. Originality/value Incorporating art-making and exhibiting the art in public spaces could be incorporated into YPâs mental health services to support well-being and inform the perception the general public hold of mental health, thus reducing stigma
Feral pig management in Australia: implications for disease control
Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) were introduced to Australia following European settlement and are now widely distributed in a variety of habitats. High-density populations are found particularly in north-eastern Australia. Feral pigs are commonly viewed as a valued hunting or commercial resource, occasionally as an important cultural resource, but overwhelmingly as a devastating agricultural and environmental pest. Their wide-ranging impacts demand intervention through control programs on many production and conservation lands. Feral pigs also carry pathogens of human health significance and contribute to the persistence and transmission of a range of endemic diseases or pathogens of livestock and wildlife. Apparent horizons in simplicial Brill wave initial data
We construct initial data for a particular class of Brill wave metrics using
Regge calculus, and compare the results to a corresponding continuum solution,
finding excellent agreement. We then search for trapped surfaces in both sets
of initial data, and provide an independent verification of the existence of an
apparent horizon once a critical gravitational wave amplitude is passed. Our
estimate of this critical value, using both the Regge and continuum solutions,

Update on the Fishes of Texas Project
Poster presentation presented at the 2017 Texas Academy of Sciences annual meeting in Belton, Texas on March 4, 2017.The Fishes of Texas project (www.fishesoftexas.org), originating in 2006, remains the most reliable (quality
controlled) and data rich site for acquiring occurrence data for Texas fishes, holding over 124,000 records from
42 institutions. Among many discoveries, the project is responsible for detecting at least 3 freshwater species
not previously known from the state. We continue making improvements, but substantial updates so far have
been onerous for our developers for various reasons. A recent major update reduces coding redundancies,
points the website to a new massively restructured and more fully normalized PostgreSQL database (was
MySQL), and places the code in a versioning environment. These changes have little immediate effect on user
experience, but will greatly accelerate development. PostgreSQL allows for complex spatial queries which will
allow users to quickly map occurrence data alongside many more political/environmental layers than currently
possible. While our database/web designers have been implementing these changes and fixing bugs etc.,
weâve been preparing resources for them to integrate into the website. Some highlights to expect: 1 new
updates to the state Species of Greatest Concern list; 2 expert opinion-determined nativity spatial layers for
all freshwater fishes displaying in our new mapping system; 3 dynamic statistical summaries; 4 new data types
from the literature (>14,900 records), citizen science (>4,300), anglers (>37,000), and agency databases
(>1,000,000); 5 new museum records, many derived from our gap sampling (~19,000, 4 museums); 6 more
specimen examinations (>400) and photographs (1000); 7 document archive with âsmartâ text search tools

A Tamarisk Habitat Suitability Map for the Continental US
This paper presents a national-scale map of habitat suitability for a high-priority invasive species, Tamarisk (Tamarisk spp., salt cedar). We successfully integrate satellite data and tens of thousands of field sampling points through logistic regression modeling to create a habitat suitability map that is 90% accurate. This interagency effort uses field data collected and coordinated through the US Geological Survey and nation-wide environmental data layers derived from NASA s MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). We demonstrate the utilization of the map by ranking the lower 48 US states (and the District of Columbia) based upon their absolute, as well as proportional, areas of highly likely and moderately likely habitat for Tamarisk. The interagency effort and modeling approach presented here could be applied to map other harmful species in the US and globally
Identification of 5 novel genes methylated in breast and other epithelial cancers
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There are several high throughput approaches to identify methylated genes in cancer. We utilized one such recently developed approach, MIRA (methylated-CpG island recovery assay) combined with CpG island arrays to identify novel genes that are epigenetically inactivated in breast cancer.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using this approach we identified numerous CpG islands that demonstrated aberrant DNA methylation in breast cancer cell lines. Using a combination of COBRA and sequencing of bisulphite modified DNA, we confirmed 5 novel genes frequently methylated in breast tumours; <it>EMILIN2, SALL1</it>, <it>DBC1</it>, <it>FBLN2 </it>and <it>CIDE-A</it>. Methylation frequencies ranged from between 25% and 63% in primary breast tumours, whilst matched normal breast tissue DNA was either unmethylated or demonstrated a much lower frequency of methylation compared to malignant breast tissue DNA. Furthermore expression of the above 5 genes was shown to be restored following treatment with a demethylating agent in methylated breast cancer cell lines. We have expanded this analysis across three other common epithelial cancers (lung, colorectal, prostate). We demonstrate that the above genes show varying levels of methylation in these cancers. Lastly and most importantly methylation of <it>EMILIN2 </it>was associated with poorer clinical outcome in breast cancer and was strongly associated with estrogen receptor as well as progesterone receptor positive breast cancers.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The combination of the MIRA assay with CpG island arrays is a very useful technique for identifying epigenetically inactivated genes in cancer genomes and can provide molecular markers for early cancer diagnosis, prognosis and epigenetic therapy.</p
Numerical Relativity: A review
Computer simulations are enabling researchers to investigate systems which
are extremely difficult to handle analytically. In the particular case of
General Relativity, numerical models have proved extremely valuable for
investigations of strong field scenarios and been crucial to reveal unexpected
phenomena. Considerable efforts are being spent to simulate astrophysically
relevant simulations, understand different aspects of the theory and even
provide insights in the search for a quantum theory of gravity. In the present
article I review the present status of the field of Numerical Relativity,
describe the techniques most commonly used and discuss open problems and (some)

Counting the bodies: Estimating the numbers and spatial variation of Australian reptiles, birds and mammals killed by two invasive mesopredators
Aim Introduced predators negatively impact biodiversity globally, with insular fauna often most severely affected. Here, we assess spatial variation in the number of terrestrial vertebrates (excluding amphibians) killed by two mammalian mesopredators introduced to Australia, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and feral cat (Felis catus). We aim to identify prey groups that suffer especially high rates of predation, and regions where losses to foxes and/or cats are most substantial. Location Australia. Methods We draw information on the spatial variation in tallies of reptiles, birds and mammals killed by cats in Australia from published studies. We derive tallies for fox predation by (i) modelling continental-scale spatial variation in fox density, (ii) modelling spatial variation in the frequency of occurrence of prey groups in fox diet, (iii) analysing the number of prey individuals within dietary samples and (iv) discounting animals taken as carrion. We derive point estimates of the numbers of individuals killed annually by foxes and by cats and map spatial variation in these tallies. Results Foxes kill more reptiles, birds and mammals (peaking at 1071Â kmâ2Â yearâ1) than cats (55Â kmâ2Â yearâ1) across most of the unmodified temperate and forested areas of mainland Australia, reflecting the generally higher density of foxes than cats in these environments. However, across most of the continent â mainly the arid central and tropical northern regions (and on most Australian islands) â cats kill more animals than foxes. We estimate that foxes and cats together kill 697Â million reptiles annually in Australia, 510Â million birds and 1435Â million mammals. Main conclusions This continental-scale analysis demonstrates that predation by two introduced species takes a substantial and ongoing toll on Australian reptiles, birds and mammals. Continuing population declines and potential extinctions of some of these species threatens to further compound Australia's poor contemporary conservation record
