    Simulations of electromagnetic transients in transmission lines can be carried out using simple circuit model. In the case of applications of simple circuit models based on π circuits, there are problems mainly caused by numeric oscillations. The lumped-parameter π equivalent model can be used with some advantages. The numeric integration method applied to the simulations of electromagnetic transients is the trapezoidal rule. If this numeric method is associated with the π equivalent model, results obtained from the simulations are distorted by Gibbs' oscillations or numeric ones. The introduction of damping resistance parallel to the series RL branch of the π equivalent model can mitigate Gibbs' oscillations in obtained results. Voltage peaks caused by these oscillations can also be decreased. So, in this paper, the combined in uences of the introduction of damping resistance, the number of π circuits and the time step are investigated searching for minimizing Gibbs' oscillations and the voltage peaks in electromagnetic transient simulations. For this, transient simulations are exhaustively carried out for determining the highest voltage peaks, ranges of damping resistances and other parameters of the model, which minimize these voltage peaks caused by Gibbs' oscillations752739FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESP2015/21390-

    Applying numerical routines based on trapezoidal rule of integration (Heun’s method for numerical integration), simple models of transmission lines are used to analyze and simulate the propagation of communication signals in PLC-type systems (power line communication systems). Such systems are shared by the same systems for the transfer of electrical power and signal transmission. For the mentioned routines, the main objectives are: simulate the propagation of electromagnetic transients in these systems and analyze the interference of such phenomena in the transmitted signal. Such simulations are performed with classical structures that represent infinitesimal units of transmission lines. Modifications in the structure of such units are analyzed to improve the results obtained by the mentioned simulations

Investigation of linear instability mechanisms is essential for understanding the process of transition from laminar to turbulent flow. An algorithm for the numerical solution of the compressible BiGlobal eigenvalue problem is developed. This algorithm exploits the sparsity of the matrices resulting from the spatial discretization of the enigenvalue problem in order to improve the performance in terms of both memory and CPU time over previous dense algebra solutions. Spectral collocation and finite differences spatial discretization methods are implemented, and a performance study is carried out in order to determine the best practice for the efficient solution of a general physical problem with sparse matrix techniques. A combination of spectral collocation and finite differences can further improve the performance. The code developed is then applied in order to revisit and complete the parametric analyses on global instability of the compressible swept Hiemenz flow initiated in (THEOFILIS; FEDOROV; COLLIS, 2004) and obtain neutral curves of this flow as a function of the Mach number in the 0 \'< OU =\' Ma \'< OU =\' 1 range. The present numerical results fully confirm the asymptotic theory results presented in (THEOFILIS; FEDOROV; COLLIS, 2004). This work presents a complete parametric study of the instability properties of modal three dimensional disturbances in the subsonic range for the flow conguration at hand. Up to the subsonic maximum Mach number value studied, it is found that an increase in this parameter reduces the critical Reynolds number and the range of the unstable spanwise wavenumbers

In an aircraft, high-lift devices operating at high angle of attack promote the formation wakes. Such wakes influence the aerodynamic performance. The slat wake, for example, affects the transition point of the wing main element and is the most important source of noise in the airframe. Owing to the generation of lift these wakes are asymmetries. Bodies immersed in a shear flow also produce asymmetric wakes, with important applications to the oil industry. There are aspects of such flows that need investigation. For instance, there is no consensus about whether or not the asymmetry can suppress vortex shedding or how it affects the shedding frequency. Indeed there is an apparent discrepancy between results found in literature. The aim of the present work was to contribute to this issue. The idea was to investigate the influence of asymmetry on a two-dimensional wake profile under temporal development. The asymmetric wake profile was obtained by a combination between a Gaussian wake profile and a hyperbolic tangent mixing layer profile. The bidimensional (2D) linear stability theory analysis of the profile was performed. The work also included 2D Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) using the characteristic formulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in non-conservative form. The results showed that the asymmetry reduces the shedding frequency for the range of 0 \'< OU =\' K \'< OU =\' 0,25 investigated. For small values of the asymmetric parameter the results showed that the asymmetry promotes stability. Effects of the number of Mach in asymmetric wake also were investigated. The results showed that the increase of Ma reduced the maximum rate amplification and the band unstable. Moreover, the results from literature were reconciled by taking into account the variation of the drag coefficient with the asymmetry. Therefore, a possible explanation for the controversy was offered

    Compressible modes in a square lid-driven cavity

    No full text
    This paper studies the effect of compressibility on the linear stability of a two-dimensional lid-driven cavity flow in the subsonic regime. The base flow is generated by high fidelity direct numerical simulation and a biglobal mode instability analysis is carried out by a matrix forming approach. The eigenvalue problem is discretized by high-order finite differences and Arnoldi algorithm is used to reduce the size of the problem. The solution procedure uses sparse matrix techniques. Influence of Mach number on the modes known from incompressible calculations is presented, showing that compressibility has a stabilizing effect. New modes that appear only for compressible flows are presented and their relationship with duct acoustics is investigated.Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP

    Sustainable Composites: Analysis of Filler–Rubber Interaction in Natural Rubber–Styrene–Butadiene Rubber/Polyurethane Composites Using the Lorenz–Park Method and Scanning Electron Microscopy

    No full text
    This study examined micronized polyurethane residues as a reinforcing filler in elastomeric composites made from natural rubber (NR) and styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR). Due to growing environmental concerns, this research aimed to find sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials. The results indicated that adding micronized polyurethane improved the mechanical properties of the composites, reinforcing the polymer matrix and increasing the cross-link density as a barrier against solvents. The composites met the requirements for industrial applications, though; at 40 phr of polyurethane filler, material deformation was reduced, indicating saturation. FTIR analysis confirmed the homogeneity of the materials without chemical reactions, while electron microscopy revealed an increase in the number of particles and irregularities with the filler. The composite with 10 phr showed a lower volume loss in abrasion resistance, meeting the standards for soles. The composite with 30 phr of polyurethane achieved the best results without the filler’s saturation and met the footwear industry’s requirements. The results show the potential for sustainable practices in industry using this elastomeric blend

    Search for high-mass exclusive diphoton production with tagged protons in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    A search is presented for high-mass exclusive diphoton production via photon-photon fusion in proton-proton collisions at s= \sqrt{s} = 13 TeV in events where both protons survive the interaction. The analysis utilizes data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 103 fb1 ^{-1} collected in 2016--2018 with the central CMS detector and the CMS and TOTEM precision proton spectrometer (PPS). Events that have two photons with high transverse momenta (pTγ> p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\gamma} > 100 GeV), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass (mγγ> m_{\gamma\gamma} > 350 GeV) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Only events having opposite-side forward protons detected with a fractional momentum loss between 0.035 and 0.15 (0.18) for the detectors on the negative (positive) side of CMS are considered. One exclusive diphoton candidate is observed for an expected background of 1.1 events. Limits at 95% confidence level are derived for the four-photon anomalous coupling parameters ζ1 |\zeta_1| 100 GeV), back-to-back in azimuth, and with a large diphoton invariant mass (mγγ>m_{\gamma\gamma} \gt 350 GeV) are selected. To remove the dominant inclusive diphoton backgrounds, the kinematic properties of the protons detected in PPS are required to match those of the central diphoton system. Additionally, upper limits are placed on the production of axion-like particles with coupling strength to photons f1f^{-1} that varies from 0.03 TeV1^{-1} to 1 TeV1^{-1} over the mass range from 500 to 2000 GeV

    Nonresonant central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in proton-proton collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    International audienceThe central exclusive production of charged-hadron pairs in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13\TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-β\beta^* run of the LHC. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-}<\lt 0.7 GeV or mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-}>\gt 1.8 GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared exchanged four-momenta, and mπ+πm_{\pi^+\pi^-} are measured in a wide region of scattered proton transverse momenta, between 0.2 and 0.8 GeV, and for pion rapidities y\lvert y\rvert<\lt 2. A rich structure of interactions related to double-pomeron exchange is observed. A parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be interpreted as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons from the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities are determined that are related to the pomeron cross section, proton-pomeron and meson-pomeron form factors, pomeron trajectory and intercept, and coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton

    International audienceThe Precision Proton Spectrometer (PPS) of the CMS and TOTEM experiments collected 107.7 fb1^{-1} in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC at 13 TeV (Run 2). This paper describes the key features of the PPS alignment and optics calibrations, the proton reconstruction procedure, as well as the detector efficiency and the performance of the PPS simulation. The reconstruction and simulation are validated using a sample of (semi)exclusive dilepton events. The performance of PPS has proven the feasibility of continuously operating a near-beam proton spectrometer at a high luminosity hadron collider

    First search for exclusive diphoton production at high mass with tagged protons in proton-proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

    No full text
    A search for exclusive two-photon production via photon exchange in proton-proton collisions, pp \to pγγ\gamma\gammap with intact protons, is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb1^{-1} collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM detectors at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC. Events are selected with a diphoton invariant mass above 350 GeV and with both protons intact in the final state, to reduce backgrounds from strong interactions. The events of interest are those where the invariant mass and rapidity calculated from the momentum losses of the forward-moving protons matches the mass and rapidity of the central, two-photon system. No events are found that satisfy this condition. Interpreting this result in an effective dimension-8 extension of the standard model, the first limits are set on the two anomalous four-photon coupling parameters. If the other parameter is constrained to its standard model value, the limits at 95% CL are ζ1\lvert\zeta_1\rvert <\lt 2.9 ×\times 1013^{-13} GeV4^{-4} and ζ2\lvert\zeta_2\rvert <\lt 6.0 ×\times 1013^{-13} GeV4^{-4}
