    Mafia, elections and violence against politicians

    Organized crime uses political violence to influence politics in a wide set of countries. This paper exploits a novel dataset of attacks directed towards Italian local politicians to study how (and why) criminal organizations use violence against them. We test two competing theories to predict the use of violence i) before elections, to affect the electoral outcome and ii) after elections, to influence politicians from the beginning of their term. We provide causal evidence in favor of the latter hypothesis. The probability of being a target of violence increases in the weeks right after an election in areas with a high presence of organized crime, especially when elections result in a change of local government

    An Unusual Complication of Transthoracic Lung Biopsy

    Objectives: We report a case of a frail older adult affected by Chilaiditi syndrome complicating transthoracic lung biopsy, which has never been presented before in the literature. Materials and methods: After illustration of our case, we review the available literature about Chilaiditi syndrome. Results: Chilaiditi syndrome is a rare disease characterised by the interposition of colonic segments between the liver and diaphragm associated with mild to severe clinical symptoms. Conclusion: Although it is uncommon, Chilaiditi syndrome is a clinical condition that should be recognized early and differentiated from other diseases since it may significantly impair a patient’s prognosis

    Click-Chemistry Cross-Linking of Hyaluronan Graft Copolymers

    An easy and viable crosslinking procedure by click-chemistry (click-crosslinking) of hyaluronic acid (HA) was developed. In particular, the clickable propargyl groups of hyaluronane-based HA-FA-Pg graft copolymers showing low and medium molecular weight values were exploited in crosslinking by click-chemistry by using a hexa(ethylene glycol) spacer. The resulting HA-FA-HEG-CL materials showed an apparent lack of in vitro cytotoxic effects, tuneable water affinity, and rheological properties according to the crosslinking degree that suggests their applicability in different biomedical fields

    High-grade serous carcinoma of unknown primary origin associated with STIC clinically presented as isolated inguinal lymphadenopathy: a case report

    Serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC) is a precancerous lesion of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). Usually, it arises from the fimbrial end of the tube, and it is associated with metastatic potential. On average, the time to progress from STIC to HGSOC is 6.5 years. Therefore, whenever a STIC lesion is found, surgical staging and prophylactic salpingectomy are recommended in order to prevent ovarian cancer. We report a rare case of a 45-year-old female patient who clinically presented an isolated right inguinal lymphadenopathy. The remaining clinical examination was normal. Therefore, an excisional biopsy of the lymph node was performed. Pathological analysis revealed a high-grade serous carcinoma, most likely of gynecological origin. Due to histological evidence, a computed tomography (CT) scan was carried out. There was no CT evidence of ovarian disease, pelvic involvement, intra-abdominal lymphadenopathies, metastatic disease, or ascites. All tumor markers were negative. The patient underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy followed by surgical staging. Surprisingly, pathological examination showed a STIC lesion in the fimbria of the left fallopian tube. We aim to report the potential capability of STIC to spread particularly through lymphatic pathways rather than peritoneal dissemination

    Understanding the complex geomorphology of a deep sea area affected by continental tectonic indentation: The case of the Gulf of Vera (Western Mediterranean)

UTM-CSIC.doi: 10.20351/29SG20120517We present a multidisciplinary study of morphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonic structure, and physical oceanography to report that the complex geomorphology of the Palomares continental margin and adjacent Algerian abyssal plain (i.e., Gulf of Vera, Western Mediterranean), is the result of the sedimentary response to the Aguilas Arc continental tectonic indentation in the Eurasian–Africa plate collision. The indentation is imprinted on the basement of the margin with elongated metamorphic antiforms that are pierced by igneous bodies, and synforms that accommodate the deformation and create a complex physiography. The basement is partially covered by Upper Miocene deposits sealed by the regional Messinian Erosive Surface characterized by palaeocanyons that carve the modern margin. These deposits and outcropping basement highs are then covered and shaped by Plio-Quaternary contourites formed under the action of the Light Intermediate and Dense Deep Mediterranean bottom currents. Even though bottom currents are responsible for the primary sedimentation that shapes the margin, 97% of this region's seafloor is affected by mass-movements that modified contourite sediments by eroding, deforming, faulting, sliding, and depositing sediments. Mass-movement processes have resulted in the formation of recurrent mass-flow deposits, an enlargement of the submarine canyons and gully incisions, and basin-scale gravitational slides spreading above the Messinian Salinity Crisis salt layer. The Polopo, Aguilas and Gata slides are characterized by an extensional upslope domain that shapes the continental margin, and by a downslope contractional domain that shapes the abyssal plain with diapirs piercing (hemi)pelagites/sheet-like turbidites creating a seafloor dotted by numerous crests. The mass movements were mostly triggered by the interplay of the continental tectonic indentation of the Aguilas Arc with sedimentological factors over time. The indentation, which involves the progressively southeastward tectonic tilting of the whole land-sea region, likely generated a quasi-continuous oversteepening of the entire margin, thus reducing the stability of the contourites.
