A shock absorbent webbing of partially drawn synthetic strands is arranged in sections of varying density related to the varying mass of the human body. This is contoured to protect the body at points of contact, when subjected to large acceleration or deceleration forces

The Role of the librarian in the guidance program

    Get PDF
A broader application of guidance to the school program is needed in most of our school systems today. Guidance consistent with democratic philosophy becomes a process through which the junior high school seeks to help boys and girls, through democratic procedures, to solve problems which are meaningful and of concern to them. A program of guidance should be designed to provide the students with educational, vocational, social, and civic information. Modern trends in guidance point toward the importance of the teacher as a guidance worker. Davis says that guidance is an on-going process and should take place where the need arises

Barriers to Disclosure of Sexual Victimization Experiences Among Men

Efforts to better understand sexual victimization experiences among male populations have been chiefly absent (Spataro, Moss, & Wells, 2001; Stermac, Sheridan, Davidson, & Dunn, 1996). ). Research indicates that approximately 1 in 71 men in the United States (i.e., 1.6 million men) have been raped in their lifetime, and nearly 1 in 5 men (i.e., 25 million men) have experienced sexual victimization other than rape in their lifetime (Black, Basile, Breiding, Smith, Walters, Merrick, Chen, & Stevens, 2011). It is suggested these estimates do not fully portray the actual prevalence given hesitancy of male victims to report the crime (Bullock & Beckson, 2011; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2006). Despite the elevated occurrence and deleterious impact of sexual violence, it remains one of the most underreported crimes in the U.S., particularly among male populations (Finkelhor, Hotaling, Lewis, & Smith, 1990; Sable, Danis, Mauzy, & Gallagher, 2006). Studies demonstrate disclosure of these experiences to be associated with mental and physical health gains as well as legal and political benefits (Ahrens, Campbell, Ternier‐Thames, Wasco, & Sefl, 2007; Uchino, 2004). The current study descriptively details the rates, demographic characteristics, emotional impact, as well as disclosure rates and details of sexual victimization experiences among men. The study also quantitatively examines whether sexual victimization details, emotion regulation strategies, male rape myth acceptance, conformity to masculine norms, attitudes toward gay men, attitudes toward women, stigma levels, and symptoms of PTSD significantly relate to disclosure behaviors of men experiencing sexual victimization

Sexual Arousal\u27s Effect on College Men\u27s Ability to Detect Protest in a Date Rape Analogue

    Get PDF
This study evaluated the impact of sexual arousal on college men\u27s ability to identify when sexual advances should cease in response to protest depicted in a date-rape audio vignette. Participant arousal level was manipulated via exposure to one of three experimental videos: a neutral control video, a humor control video, or an erotic video clip. Participants provided subjective arousal levels. Participants then listened to an audio recording depicting conversation and mutual sexual activity escalating to rape. Response latency was obtained when participants indicated the male should refrain from making further sexual advances. Participant latency time did not significantly differ by condition. This potentially suggests that sexual arousal does not impact men\u27s ability to detect partner protest in a date rape situation

The subdwarf B star SB 290 - A fast rotator on the extreme horizontal branch

Hot subdwarf B stars (sdBs) are evolved core helium-burning stars with very thin hydrogen envelopes. In order to form an sdB, the progenitor has to lose almost all of its hydrogen envelope right at the tip of the red giant branch. In close binary systems, mass transfer to the companion provides the extraordinary mass loss required for their formation. However, apparently single sdBs exist as well and their formation is unclear since decades. The merger of helium white dwarfs leading to an ignition of core helium-burning or the merger of a helium core and a low mass star during the common envelope phase have been proposed. Here we report the discovery of SB 290 as the first apparently single fast rotating sdB star located on the extreme horizontal branch indicating that those stars may form from mergers.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, A&A letters, accepte
