Two- versus three-dimensional connectivity testing of first-order queries to semi-algebraic sets
This paper addresses the question whether one can determine the connectivity
of a semi-algebraic set in three dimensions by testing the connectivity of a
finite number of two-dimensional ``samples'' of the set, where these samples
are defined by first-order queries. The question is answered negatively for two

Dissimilar response of plant and soil biota communities to long-term nutrient adition in grasslands
The long-term effect of fertilizers on plant diversity and productivity is well known, but long-term effects on soil biota communities have received relatively little attention. Here, we used an exceptional long-lasting (>40 years) grassland fertilization experiment to investigate the long-term effect of Ca, N, PK, and NPK addition on the productivity and diversity of both vegetation and soil biota. Whereas plant diversity increased by liming and decreased by N and NPK, the diversity of nematodes, collembolans, mites, and enchytraeids increased by N, PK, or NPK. Fertilization with NPK and PK increased plant biomass and biomass of enchytraeids and collembolans. Biomass of nematodes and earthworms increased by liming. Our results suggest that soil diversity might be driven by plant productivity rather than by plant diversity. This may imply that the selection of measures for restoring or conserving plant diversity may decrease soil biota diversity. This needs to be tested in future experiment
Lung volumes identify an at-risk group in persons with prolonged secondhand tobacco smoke exposure but without overt airflow obstruction.
IntroductionExposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with occult obstructive lung disease as evident by abnormal airflow indices representing small airway disease despite having preserved spirometry (normal forced expiratory volume in 1 s-to-forced vital capacity ratio, FEV1/FVC). The significance of lung volumes that reflect air trapping in the presence of preserved spirometry is unclear.MethodsTo investigate whether lung volumes representing air trapping could determine susceptibility to respiratory morbidity in people with SHS exposure but without spirometric chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, we examined a cohort of 256 subjects with prolonged occupational SHS exposure and preserved spirometry. We elicited symptom prevalence by structured questionnaires, examined functional capacity (maximum oxygen uptake, VO2max) by exercise testing, and estimated associations of those outcomes with air trapping (plethysmography-measured residual volume-to-total lung capacity ratio, RV/TLC), and progressive air trapping with exertion (increase in fraction of tidal breathing that is flow limited on expiration during exercise (per cent of expiratory flow limitation, %EFL)).ResultsRV/TLC was within the predicted normal limits, but was highly variable spanning 22%±13% and 16%±8% across the increments of FEV1/FVC and FEV1, respectively. Respiratory complaints were prevalent (50.4%) with the most common symptom being ≥2 episodes of cough per year (44.5%). Higher RV/TLC was associated with higher OR of reporting respiratory symptoms (n=256; r2=0.03; p=0.011) and lower VO2max (n=179; r2=0.47; p=0.013), and %EFL was negatively associated with VO2max (n=32; r2=0.40; p=0.017).ConclusionsIn those at risk for obstruction due to SHS exposure but with preserved spirometry, higher RV/TLC identifies a subgroup with increased respiratory symptoms and lower exercise capacity
Charge Transport Properties of a Metal-free Phthalocyanine Discotic Liquid Crystal
Discotic liquid crystals can self-align to form one-dimensional
semiconducting wires, many tens of microns long. In this letter, we describe
the preparation of semiconducting films where the stacking direction of the
disc-like molecules is perpendicular to the substrate surface. We present
measurements of the charge carrier mobility, applying temperature-dependent
time-of-flight transient photoconductivity, space-charge limited current
measurements, and field-effect mobility measurements. We provide experimental
verification of the highly anisotropic nature of semiconducting films of
discotic liquid crystals, with charge carrier mobilities of up to
2.8x10cm/Vs. These properties make discotics an interesting choice
for applications such as organic photovoltaics.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
High-precision prompt-γ-ray spectral data from the reaction Pu 241 (nth, f)
In this paper we present results from the first high-precision prompt-γ-ray spectral measurements from the reaction Pu241(nth, f). Apart from one recent experiment, no data are reported in the literature for this fissioning system, which motivated a new dedicated experiment. We have measured prompt-fission γ rays with three cerium-doped LaBr3 (two 5.08cm×5.08 cm and one 7.62cm×7.62 cm) and one CeBr3 (5.08cm×5.08 cm) scintillation detectors, which all exhibit excellent timing and good energy resolution. The average γ-ray multiplicity was determined to be ν̄γ=(8.21±0.09) per fission, the average energy to be εγ=(0.78±0.01) MeV, and the total energy to be Eγ,tot=(6.41±0.06) MeV as the weighted average from all detectors. Since the results from all detectors are in excellent agreement, and the total released γ energy is modestly higher than the one in the present evaluated nuclear data files, we suspect that the underestimation of the prompt-γ heating in nuclear reactors is due to fast-neutron-induced fission on U238 or rather from fission induced by γ rays from neutron capture in the construction material.European Commision NeutAndalus FP7-PEOPLE-2012-CIGPrograma ERINDA 26949
Phase stability analysis in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy systems: An augmented space study
We have studied the problem of phase stability in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy
systems. We have used the orbital peeling technique in the conjunction of
augmented space recursion based on the tight binding linear orbital method as
the method for the calculation of pair interaction energies. In particular, we
have generalized our earlier technique to take into account of magnetic effects
for the cases where the magnetic transition is higher than the order disorder
chemical transition temperature as in the case of CoPt. Our theoretical
results obtained within this framework successfully reproduce the

Cancer and thrombosis: Managing the risks and approaches to thromboprophylaxis
Patients with cancer are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared with patients without cancer. This results from both the prothrombotic effects of the cancer itself and iatrogenic factors, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, indwelling central venous devices and surgery, that further increase the risk of VTE. Although cancer-associated thrombosis remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality, it is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. However, evidence is accumulating to support the use of low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) in the secondary prevention of VTE in patients with cancer. Not only have LMWHs been shown to be at least as effective as coumarin derivatives in this setting, but they have a lower incidence of complications, including bleeding, and are not associated with the practical problems of warfarin therapy. Furthermore, a growing number of studies indicate that LMWHs may improve survival among patients with cancer due to a possible antitumor effect. Current evidence suggests that LMWHs should increasingly be considered for the long-term management of VTE in patients with cancer
Functional cooperation between KCa3.1 and TRPC1 channels in human breast cancer: Role in cell proliferation and patient prognosis
Intracellular Ca2+ levels are important regulators of cell cycle and proliferation. We, and others, have previously reported the role of KCa3.1 (KCNN4) channels in regulating the membrane potential and the Ca2+ entry in association with cell proliferation. However, the relevance of KC3.1 channels in cancer prognosis as well as the molecular mechanism of Ca2+ entry triggered by their activation remain undetermined. Here, we show that RNAi-mediated knockdown of KCa3.1 and/or TRPC1 leads to a significant decrease in cell proliferation due to cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. These results are consistent with the observed upregulation of both channels in synchronized cells at the end of G1 phase. Additionally, knockdown of TRPC1 suppressed the Ca2+ entry induced by 1-EBIO-mediated KCa3.1 activation, suggesting a functional cooperation between TRPC1 and KCa3.1 in the regulation of Ca2+ entry, possibly within lipid raft microdomains where these two channels seem to co-localize. We also show significant correlations between KCa3.1 mRNA expression and poor patient prognosis and unfavorable clinical breast cancer parameters by mining large datasets in the public domain. Discovery of mating in the major African livestock pathogen Trypanosoma congolense
The protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma congolense, is one of the most economically important pathogens of livestock in Africa and, through its impact on cattle health and productivity, has a significant effect on human health and well being. Despite the importance of this parasite our knowledge of some of the fundamental biological processes is limited. For example, it is unknown whether mating takes place. In this paper we have taken a population genetics based approach to address this question. The availability of genome sequence of the parasite allowed us to identify polymorphic microsatellite markers, which were used to genotype T. congolense isolates from livestock in a discrete geographical area of The Gambia. The data showed a high level of diversity with a large number of distinct genotypes, but a deficit in heterozygotes. Further analysis identified cryptic genetic subdivision into four sub-populations. In one of these, parasite genotypic diversity could only be explained by the occurrence of frequent mating in T. congolense. These data are completely inconsistent with previous suggestions that the parasite expands asexually in the absence of mating. The discovery of mating in this species of trypanosome has significant consequences for the spread of critical traits, such as drug resistance, as well as for fundamental aspects of the biology and epidemiology of this neglected but economically important pathogen
