Part of the Volume on the Ecology of Games: Connecting Youth, Games, and Learning In this chapter, I argue that good video games recruit good learning and that a game's design is inherently connected to designing good learning for players. I start with a perspective on learning now common in the Learning Sciences that argues that people primarily think and learn through experiences they have had, not through abstract calculations and generalizations. People store these experiences in memory -- and human long-term memory is now viewed as nearly limitless -- and use them to run simulations in their minds to prepare for problem solving in new situations. These simulations help them to form hypotheses about how to proceed in the new situation based on past experiences. The chapter also discusses the conditions experience must meet if it is to be optimal for learning and shows how good video games can deliver such optimal learning experiences. Some of the issues covered include: identity and learning; models and model-based thinking; the control of avatars and "empathy for a complex system"; distributed intelligence and cross-functional teams for learning; motivation, and ownership; emotion in learning; and situated meaning, that is, the ways in which games represent verbal meaning through images, actions, and dialogue, not just other words and definitions

An overview of the DOE terrestrial crystalline solar cell research program

    Get PDF
There has been significant progress in the crystalline solar cell area in the past two years that has rejuvenated interest in the high efficiency devices for terrestrial photovoltaic systems. The most significant developments have been in the crystalline solar cell area, but progress in the III-V area has also been recorded. A review of terrestrial crystalline cell research is presented along with a description of future research directions

A comparison of the radiation tolerance characteristics of multijunction solar cells with series and voltage-matched configurations

The effect of series and voltage-matched configurations on the performance of multijunction solar cells in a radiation environment was investigated. It was found that the configuration of the multijunction solar cell can have a significant impact on its radiation tolerance characteristics

The effect of different module configurations on the radiation tolerance of multijunction solar cells

The effect of different module configurations on the performance of multijunction (MJ) solar cells in a radiation environment was investigated. Module configuration refers to the electrical circuit in which the subcells of the multijunction cell are wired. Experimental data for AlCaAs, GaAs, InGaAs, and silicon single-junction concentrator cells subjected to 1 MeV electron irradiation was used to calculate the expected performance of AlGaAs/InGaAs, AlGa/silicon, GaAs/InGaAs, and GaAs/silicon Mj concentrator cells. These calculations included independent, series, and voltage-matched configurations. The module configuration was found to have a significant impact on the radiation tolerance characteristic of the MJ cells

    A Systems Theory of Multimodality

This paper offers a tentative theory of how to approach the analysis of multimodal “texts” (using the word loosely for any integrated set of symbols that resemble written texts in communicative power).  Much work on multimodality is new and many key issues are not yet broached, let alone settled.  The theory I produce treats modes as semiotic systems (sets of social conventions about meaning) and multimodality as a system of systems.  A theory in a new domain helps us understand what we take the “things” we are going analyze to be (our “ontology”).  In turn, our choice of “things” determines the sorts of tools we will need for analysis and the sorts of questions we will ask, a number of which are delineated in this paper.  The theory developed here is based on the correspondences between linguistic systems and non-linguistic modal systems.  The paper closes with a discussion of the implications of the approach I propose for work on design and learning
