Pressure-induced melting of the orbital polaron lattice in La1-xSrxMnO3
We report on the pressure effects on the orbital polaron lattice in the
lightly doped manganites , with . The
dependence of the orbital polaron lattice on chemical pressure is
studied by substituting Pr for La in
. In addition, we have studied
its hydrostatic pressure dependence in
. Our results strongly
indicate that the hopping significantly contributes to the stabilization of
the orbital polaron lattice and that the orbital polarons are ferromagnetic
objects which get stabilized by local double exchange processes. The analysis
of short range orbital correlations and the verification of the Grueneisen
scaling by hard x-ray, specific heat and thermal expansion data reinforces our
conclusions.Comment: 7 figure
Interrogating Chivalry and the Hunt in the Auchinleck Guy of Warwick
Grounded in an examination of contemporary chivalric values and hunting law, this paper considers the excision of two morally problematic scenes in the Middle English and Anglo-Norman Guy of Warwick / Gui de Warewic tradition: Guy's killing of the Earl Florentine's son, who accused Guy of poaching, and Duke Segyn's killing of his overlord's nephew Sadok, who rashly challenged Segyn to combat. While the excision of these scenes by redactors may render Guy more unambiguously heroic, it simultaneously confuses the major turning point of the romance, where Guy abandons his inherently flawed world-view of secular chivalry for a divinely oriented path of heroism
Enumeration of bigrassmannian permutations below a permutation in Bruhat order
In theory of Coxeter groups, bigrassmannian elements are well known as
elements which have precisely one left descent and precisely one right descent.
In this article, we prove formulas on enumeration of bigrassmannian
permutations weakly below a permutation in Bruhat order in the symmetric
groups. For the proof, we use equivalent characterizations of bigrassmannian
permutations by Lascoux-Schutzenberger and Reading.Comment: 7 pages
Hecke algebras with unequal parameters and Vogan's left cell invariants
In 1979, Vogan introduced a generalised -invariant for characterising
primitive ideals in enveloping algebras. Via a known dictionary this translates
to an invariant of left cells in the sense of Kazhdan and Lusztig. Although it
is not a complete invariant, it is extremely useful in describing left cells.
Here, we propose a general framework for defining such invariants which also
applies to Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.Comment: 15 pages. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Schur elements for the Ariki-Koike algebra and applications
We study the Schur elements associated to the simple modules of the
Ariki-Koike algebra. We first give a cancellation-free formula for them so that
their factors can be easily read and programmed. We then study direct
applications of this result. We also complete the determination of the
canonical basic sets for cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type in
characteristic 0.Comment: The paper contains the results of arXiv:1101.146
Orbital polaron lattice formation in lightly doped La1-xSrxMnO3
By resonant x-ray scattering at the Mn K-edge on La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, we show that
an orbital polaron lattice (OPL) develops at the metal-insulator transition of
this compound. This orbital reordering explains consistently the unexpected
coexistence of ferromagnetic and insulating properties at low temperatures, the
quadrupling of the lattice structure parallel to the MnO2-planes, and the
observed polarization and azimuthal dependencies. The OPL is a clear
manifestation of strong orbital-hole interactions, which play a crucial role
for the colossal magnetoresistance effect and the doped manganites in general
Resonant X-Ray Scattering Measurements of a Spatial Modulation of the Cu 3d and O 2p Energies in Stripe-Ordered Cuprate Superconductors
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate
superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a
microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant
elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered
LaNdSrCuO at the Cu and O absorption
edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the
energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant
signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d
and O 2p states rather than the large modulation of the charge density
(valence) envisioned in the common stripe paradigm. These energy shifts are
interpreted as a spatial modulation of the electronic structure and may point
to a valence-bond-solid interpretation of the stripe phase.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Cu -edge Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in Edge-Sharing Cuprates
We present calculations for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in
edge-shared copper oxide systems, such as CuGeO and LiCuO,
appropriate for hard x-ray scattering where the photoexcited electron lies
above oxygen 2p and copper 3d orbital energies. We perform exact
diagonalizations of the multi-band Hubbard and determine the energies, orbital
character and resonance profiles of excitations which can be probed via RIXS.
We find excellent agreement with recent results on LiCuO and
CuGeO in the 2-7 eV photon energy loss range.Comment: Updated with new data, expanded 9 pages, 9 figure
Effect of Zn and Ni impurities on the quasiparticle renormalization in Bi-2212
The Cu substitution by Zn and Ni impurities and its influence on the mass
renormalization effects in angle resolved photoelectron spectra (ARPES) of
Bi-2212 is addressed. We show that the nonmagnetic Zn atoms have much stronger
effect both in nodal and antinodal parts of the Brillouin zone than magnetic
Ni. The observed changes are consistent with the behaviour of the spin
resonance mode as seen by inelastic neutron scattering in YBCO. This strongly
suggests that the "peak-dip-hump" and the "kink" in ARPES on the one side and
neutron resonance on the other are closely related features.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
