Convolutional and Deep Learning based techniques for Time Series Ordinal Classification

Time Series Classification (TSC) covers the supervised learning problem where input data is provided in the form of series of values observed through repeated measurements over time, and whose objective is to predict the category to which they belong. When the class values are ordinal, classifiers that take this into account can perform better than nominal classifiers. Time Series Ordinal Classification (TSOC) is the field covering this gap, yet unexplored in the literature. There are a wide range of time series problems showing an ordered label structure, and TSC techniques that ignore the order relationship discard useful information. Hence, this paper presents a first benchmarking of TSOC methodologies, exploiting the ordering of the target labels to boost the performance of current TSC state-of-the-art. Both convolutional- and deep learning-based methodologies (among the best performing alternatives for nominal TSC) are adapted for TSOC. For the experiments, a selection of 18 ordinal problems from two well-known archives has been made. In this way, this paper contributes to the establishment of the state-of-the-art in TSOC. The results obtained by ordinal versions are found to be significantly better than current nominal TSC techniques in terms of ordinal performance metrics, outlining the importance of considering the ordering of the labels when dealing with this kind of problems.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 table

Emotional impact on children during home confinement in Spain

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about important changes. On March 14, 2020, a strict home confinement was decreed in Spain. Children did not attend school and were not allowed to leave their homes. The aim of this study was to determine the emotional state of these children, as well as associated factors. Material and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using an online questionnaire sent by cell phone. This survey includes sociodemographic items and questions concerning the emotional impact of the lockdown. With the questions on emotions, two categories of emotional state were established with the variables fear, irritability, sadness and somatization: those who were less or more emotionally aected. A multivariate logistic model was used to estimate the associations between the variables. Results: A total of 3,890 responses were obtained. The mean age of the children was 6.78 years (range 0 to 16). A score indicating poor emotional state was reported by 40.12%. The multivariate logistic model for poor emotional state was directly associated with having less appetite, sleep disturbances, and with parents’ beliefs that their child will have di culties returning to normal life after lockdown. A better emotional state was associated with being an only child, access to outdoor spaces at home, having pets, and parents informing their children about the pandemic using creative explanations. Conclusions: During strict home confinement, a considerable emotional impact was observed in children as described by their parents. Specific elements were associated with a better or poorer emotional stat

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the relationship between economics and marketing through four different theoretical perspectives. Firstly, we look at neoclassical economics, which proposes a framework based on a rational and optimizing consumer. This framework is generally at odds with the tenets of marketing, which operate largely by influencing non-rational aspects. Secondly, we analyze behavioral economics, which identifies multiple cognitive biases in purchasing decisions. Behavioral economics bears a close relationship with marketing given that it seeks to use these biases to shape consumer behavior. Thirdly, we look at the paradigm of neuroeconomics, which studies the decision-making process through the lens of the central nervous system. Here, the relationship takes on the form of “neuromarketing”, which uses insight into the aforementioned system to boost sales, brand positioning and consumer loyalty. Lastly, we analyze institutional economics, where the individual is conceived as acting in accordance to habits and customs. There is also a direct relationship with marketing in this case, inasmuch as marketing can influence both dimensions.

The Geoarchaeological study of Profile A of the Sala del Lago of cueva del Ocho (karstic complex of cuevas de Santiago, Cazalla de la Sierra, Seville, SW of Spain) is carried out. The aim of characterizing sequence of anthropic occupation of this sector of the cave, from the analysis of a deposit by means of archaeological, pedo-sedimentary and geo-chronological analysis techniques has been characterized. The results obtained have allowed to identify a geo-archaeological series units from which the sequence of the anthropic occupation of this sector of the cavity. It is an Ancient Neolithic occupation, short but intense, of chronology ca.5300 cal. BC, which is formed in a period of just 500 years and which it is sealed and amortized around the change of Era by a stalagmite deposit. Different anthropic uses characterize the conformation of this deposit, from an occupational activity (habitat) and initial fold, which is later transformed into a landfill area, recognizing fumier type deposits, although displaced from their original place. The high levels of organic matter present in the sediments, as well as other parameters associated like phosphorus and magnetic susceptibility reinforce the idea of the anthropic genesis for this deposit. In this sense, the study of ceramics shows that no typological or technological change has been recorded in throughout any sequence, its type and characteristics being compatible with radiocarbon chronologies contributed in the present work. At the same time the archaeofauna study shows some results the presence and management of domestic fauna, typical of deposits corresponding to the chronologies and use offered through the cueva del Ocho
