    The Persistence and Characteristics of Chinook Salmon Migrations to the Upper Klamath River Prior to Exclusion by Dams

    In this research article, John Hamilton and his co-authors present extensive new research and information gathered since a 2005 publication on the historical evidence of anadromomous fish distribution in the Upper Klamath River watershed. Using historical accounts from early explorers and ethnographers to early-twentieth-century photographs, newspaper accounts, and government reports, the authors provide a more complete record of past salmon migrations. The updated record “substantiate[s] the historical persistence of salmon, their migration characteristics, and the broad population baseline that will be key to future commercial, recreational, and Tribal fisheries in the Klamath River and beyond.” During a time when salmon restoration plans are being considered in the region, the historical record can serve as guidance to once again establish diverse and thriving populations

    Investigation of Ion Coordination by Multitopic Supramolecular Receptors

    Ions play pivotal roles both biologically and environmentally. The effects felt from the impact of ions, much like their relative charge, can be positive or negative. Ions are responsible for catalyzing and executing precise control over many of the essential processes that occur in our bodies. Ions can also be major contributors as environmental pollutants having catastrophic effects. There is a great deal of interest in better understanding the role and effect of ions in the surrounding environments. The ability to study ions of interest relies on efficient recognition and sensing of these targets. The field of supramolecular chemistry is particularly well suited for this task as it utilizes non-covalent molecular interactions in much the same way natural system involving ions operate. Broadly, this body of research seeks to explore the subtle interactions of various targeted ions with supramolecular receptors. This research is an effort to further understand the nature of these interactions for potential recognition and sensing applications as well as better understanding the highly complex systems found in biology. Chapter I provides a brief overview of various mechanisms of ion coordination in supramolecular chemistry and emphasizes some key examples demonstrating the importance of the various types of coordination as it pertains to the research presented herein. Chapter II highlights a unique class of phosphine oxide-based tripodal ditopic receptors and presents studies on their interactions with alkali metals and halides. Chapter III covers the synthesis and study of anionic binding trends for a series of heteroaromatic-containing urea-based receptors and discusses the influence of anion binding on receptor conformation. Chapter IV provides preliminary results on the application of the bipyridal bisurea-based anion receptor, presented in Chapter III, as ligand for metal salts. Chapter V focuses on a series of pyridal bisurea-based receptors with regard to their ability to serve as chloride sensitive probes in cellular environments.     The Effects of Late Gestational Exercise on Colostrum Quality and Neonatal Immunoglobulin Absorption

    To investigate the effects that late gestational exercise has on ewe performance and colostrum IgG levels, and to evaluate how it impacts neonatal serum IgG absorption and future performance, thirty-two multiparous Dorset ewes were divided into two treatment groups and were housed in individual pens. The treatment group was walked for thirty minutes per day, every other day from the start of the third trimester to lambing. The results indicate that colostrum IgG levels were significantly greater in exercised ewes compared to ewes held in confinement. Increased locomotion impacted pregnant ewe feed intake, body weight, and average daily gain. Gestational exercise did not impact lamb birth weight or weaning weight. There were no significant differences in serum IgG levels amongst lambs after colostrum consumption but there were in serum protein. Further research is needed to better understand how and why gestational exercise increased colostrum IgG levels

    Studien behandlar huruvida en del kontorsanställda akademiker upplevde stress som en konsekvens av till synes god arbetsmiljö med hög grad av krav, kontroll och gott stöd. Frågeställningen behandlar vilka arbetsmiljöfaktorer som upplevdes kunna orsaka hög stress, huruvida några av dessa faktorer var tidigare kända som salutogena samt huruvida dessa faktorer kan ligga bakom eventuella skillnader i upplevd stress mellan avdelningarna. Insamling av data utfördes med hjälp av intervjuer med tio respondenter, nio kvinnor och en man, från två olika avdelningar inom samma organisation. Frågor ställdes kring respondenternas upplevda krav, kontroll, stöd, engagemang samt stress i arbetet. Resultatet visade att graden av stress varierade mellan avdelningarna, främst på grund av obalans mellan krav och kontroll samt bristfälligt instrumentellt socialt stöd inom den ena avdelningen. Vidare fann författarna att tidigare kända salutogena faktorer så som exempelvis kontroll och sociala kontakter kan ha visat sig ge negativa konsekvenser för respondenternas mentala hälsa. Därutöver fann författarna att otydliga arbetsbeskrivningar var en bidragande faktor till arbetsrelaterad stress inom båda avdelningarna.The study addresses whether some office working graduates experienced stress as a result of a seemingly favorable work environment with a high degree of demands, control and support. The issue concerns which work environment factors that were perceived to cause high stress, whether any of these factors were previously known as salutogenic and whether these factors could be behind any differences in perceived stress between departments. Collection of empirical data was done using interviews with ten respondents, nine women and one man, from two different departments within the same organization. Questions were asked regarding the respondents' experience of demands, control, support, commitment and work related stress. The results showed that the degree of stress varied between departments, mainly due to an imbalance between demand and control and deficient instrumental social support within one department. Furthermore, the authors found that previously known salutogenic factors, such as control and social contacts were shown to have had negative consequences for the respondents' mental health. In addition, the authors found unclear job descriptions to be a contributing factor to the work-related stress in both departments

    Abstract – In this paper we describe the protection goals and mechanisms in HomePlug AV, a next-generation power-line communications standard. This is a fascinating case-history in security usability. There are also novel protocol issues; interactions with mechanisms at other layers; and opportunities for both researchers and third-party vendors to build on the mechanisms provided. The central problem – being sure whether a device being enrolled in the network is the device you think, not a similar one nearby – is not well solved by conventional mechanisms such as public-key infrastructures, but appears to require either very old-fashioned or very novel approaches

    Use of Targeted Liposome-based Chemotherapeutics to Treat Breast Cancer

    The use of nanocarriers such as liposomes to deliver anticancer drugs to tumors can significantly enhance the therapeutic index of otherwise unencapsulated cytotoxic agents. This is in part because of the fact that the phospholipid bilayer can protect healthy sensitive tissue from the damaging effects of these types of drugs. Furthermore, the ease with which the phospholipid bilayer surface can be modified to allow for polyethylene glycol incorporation resulting in pegylated liposomes allow for increased circulation times in vivo, and thus an overall increase in the concentration of the drug delivered to the tumor site. This explains the clinical success of the liposomal-based drug Doxil, which has proven to be quite efficacious in the treatment of breast cancer. However, significant challenges remain involving poor drug transfer between the liposome and tumor cells with this type of nontargeted drug delivery system. Thus, future work involves the development of “smart” drugs, or targeted drug delivery intended for improved colocalization between the drug and cancerous cells. While it is not possible to entirely discuss such a rapidly growing field of study involving many different types of chemotherapeutics here, in this review, we discuss some of the recent advancements involving the development of targeted liposome-based chemotherapeutics to treat breast cancer
