    Novel technique for measuring dispersion and detuning of a UV written silica-on-silicon waveguide

    We shall present a new method of measuring the dispersive properties of UV written waveguides in the silica-on-silicon platform used to fabricate planar Bragg gratings. The technique involves direct measurement of the modal refractive index of a waveguide produced in the material. The data obtained also provides additional information about the spectral range of Bragg grating inscription. This direct writing technique reported previously differs from fibre Bragg grating fabrication by the small spot size of the writing beam and permits detuning of the Bragg wavelength from 1250nm to 1625nm. The fabrication technique provides the exact period of the grating and thus interrogation of the gratings produces information on the effective index of the mode. A series of integrated gratings were fabricated in a direct UV written waveguide via the direct grating writing technique in order to measure the wavelength dependence of the refractive index of the material.     Realisation of photonic Hilbert transformer with a simple planar Bragg grating

    Photonic Hilbert transformers (PHTs) are desirable for the direct processing of optical signals at high speeds and operation bandwidths, allowing optical networks to outperform current electronic technologies. We practically demonstrate a photonic Hilbert transformer in planar geometry; utilising a pi-phase shift planar Bragg grating with proper apodization profile. The device is fabricated by direct UV grating writing technology in silica-on-silicon [1]. The PHT has a pi-phase shift at the zero point of the frequency response, whereas the amplitude remains constant. The pi-phase shift in PHT is simply induced by placing a pi-phase shift in the refractive index modulation. The constant amplitude is achieved by precise apodization of the grating coupling strength, while the apodization profile is given by [2]. With our current direct UV writing technology, the proposed grating can be fabricated in a much higher accuracy then the conventional fibre Bragg grating manufacturing technique. We will present our latest work on more complex apodized gratings to obtain the ideal realisable frequency and temporal responses for PHTs

    Hilbert transformers are important devices widely used in information processing and signal analysis in the electronic domain. For example, for spectral efficiency improvement, it is used to construct the analytic signal for single sideband (SSB) modulation from a real signal. Photonic Hilbert transformers (PHTs) are proposed for a similar range of applications and would allow the direct processing of optical signals at bandwidths far beyond current electronic technologies

    Classification of irreps and invariants of the N-extended Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

    We present an algorithmic classification of the irreps of the NN-extended one-dimensional supersymmetry algebra linearly realized on a finite number of fields. Our work is based on the 1-to-1 \cite{pt} correspondence between Weyl-type Clifford algebras (whose irreps are fully classified) and classes of irreps of the NN-extended 1D supersymmetry. The complete classification of irreps is presented up to N≤10N\leq 10. The fields of an irrep are accommodated in ll different spin states. N=10 is the minimal value admitting length l>4l>4 irreps. The classification of length-4 irreps of the N=12 and {\em real} N=11 extended supersymmetries is also explicitly presented.\par Tensoring irreps allows us to systematically construct manifestly (NN-extended) supersymmetric multi-linear invariants {\em without} introducing a superspace formalism. Multi-linear invariants can be constructed both for {\em unconstrained} and {\em multi-linearly constrained} fields. A whole class of off-shell invariant actions are produced in association with each irreducible representation. The explicit example of the N=8 off-shell action of the (1,8,7)(1,8,7) multiplet is presented.\par Tensoring zero-energy irreps leads us to the notion of the {\em fusion algebra} of the 1D NN-extended supersymmetric vacua.Comment: Final version to appear in JHEP. 52 pages. The part with the complete classification of irreps (and the explicit presentation of length-4 irreps of N=9,10,11,12 and N=10 length-5 irreps) is unchanged. An extra section has been added with an entire class of off-shell invariant actions for arbitrary values N of the 1D extended supersymmetry.     All-optical signal processing using planar Bragg gratings

    The fabrication techniques of Bragg gratings broadly fall into two categories: that are holographic, and that are non-interferometric, based on the periodical UV radiation along the photosensitive medium. The fabrication technique in this work is the direct UV grating writing (DGW). This method involves focusing two crossed laser beams (lambda=244nm) into a photosensitive core layer. Precise translation of the sample and modulation of the interference pattern define the channel waveguide and simultaneously create grating structures, shown in Figure 1. First developed at Optoelectronics Research Centre in 2002, it has similarities to the UV writing techniques used for fiber Bragg grating inscription. Advanced grating properties such as chirp, phase shifts, and apodisation are introduced by adjusting the laser intensity and the translating speed

    Medial-lateral centre of mass displacement and base of support are equally good predictors of metabolic cost in amputee walking

    Amputees are known to walk with greater metabolic cost than able-bodied individuals and establishing predictors of metabolic cost from kinematic measures, such as centre of mass (CoM) motion, during walking are important from a rehabilitative perspective, as they can provide quantifiable measures to target during gait rehabilitation in amputees. While it is known that vertical CoM motion poorly predicts metabolic cost, CoM motion in the medial-lateral (ML) and anterior-posterior directions have not been investigated in the context of gait efficiency in the amputee population. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the relationship between CoM motion in all three directions of motion, base of support and walking speed, and the metabolic cost of walking in both able-bodied individuals and different levels of lower limb amputee. 37 individuals were recruited to form groups of controls, unilateral above- and below-knee, and bilateral above-knee amputees respectively. Full-body optical motion and oxygen consumption data were collected during walking at a self-selected speed. CoM position was taken as the mass-weighted average of all body segments and compared to each individual’s net non-dimensional metabolic cost. Base of support and ML CoM displacement were the strongest correlates to metabolic cost and the positive correlations suggest increased ML CoM displacement or Base of support will reduce walking efficiency. Rehabilitation protocols which indirectly reduce these indicators, rather than vertical CoM displacement will likely show improvements in amputee walking efficiency

    Water dispersible microbicidal cellulose acetate phthalate film

    BACKGROUND: Cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) has been used for several decades in the pharmaceutical industry for enteric film coating of oral tablets and capsules. Micronized CAP, available commercially as "Aquateric" and containing additional ingredients required for micronization, used for tablet coating from water dispersions, was shown to adsorb and inactivate the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1), herpesviruses (HSV) and other sexually transmitted disease (STD) pathogens. Earlier studies indicate that a gel formulation of micronized CAP has a potential as a topical microbicide for prevention of STDs including the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The objective of endeavors described here was to develop a water dispersible CAP film amenable to inexpensive industrial mass production. METHODS: CAP and hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) were dissolved in different organic solvent mixtures, poured into dishes, and the solvents evaporated. Graded quantities of a resulting selected film were mixed for 5 min at 37°C with HIV-1, HSV and other STD pathogens, respectively. Residual infectivity of the treated viruses and bacteria was determined. RESULTS: The prerequisites for producing CAP films which are soft, flexible and dispersible in water, resulting in smooth gels, are combining CAP with HPC (other cellulose derivatives are unsuitable), and casting from organic solvent mixtures containing ≈50 to ≈65% ethanol (EtOH). The films are ≈100 µ thick and have a textured surface with alternating protrusions and depressions revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The films, before complete conversion into a gel, rapidly inactivated HIV-1 and HSV and reduced the infectivity of non-viral STD pathogens >1,000-fold. CONCLUSIONS: Soft pliable CAP-HPC composite films can be generated by casting from organic solvent mixtures containing EtOH. The films rapidly reduce the infectivity of several STD pathogens, including HIV-1. They are converted into gels and thus do not have to be removed following application and use. In addition to their potential as topical microbicides, the films have promise for mucosal delivery of pharmaceuticals other than CAP

    This is a postmodern article that is nontraditional in its form, content, and mode of representation. Upon recognizing that we share interests and common experiences as artists, we decided to collect life history information from each other about our artistic experiences. Thus we have become, simultaneously, "the researched" and "the re searcher." In these conversations, we explore the ways in which we were each guided by our past, very strong aesthetic and artistic experiences.     Phase Behavior of Aqueous Na-K-Mg-Ca-CI-NO3 Mixtures: Isopiestic Measurements and Thermodynamic Modeling

    A comprehensive model has been established for calculating thermodynamic properties of multicomponent aqueous systems containing the Na{sup +}, K{sup +}, Mg{sup 2+}, Ca{sup 2+}, Cl{sup -}, and NO{sub 3}{sup -} ions. The thermodynamic framework is based on a previously developed model for mixed-solvent electrolyte solutions. The framework has been designed to reproduce the properties of salt solutions at temperatures ranging from the freezing point to 300 C and concentrations ranging from infinite dilution to the fused salt limit. The model has been parameterized using a combination of an extensive literature database and new isopiestic measurements for thirteen salt mixtures at 140 C. The measurements have been performed using Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) previously designed gravimetric isopiestic apparatus, which makes it possible to detect solid phase precipitation. Water activities are reported for mixtures with a fixed ratio of salts as a function of the total apparent salt mole fraction. The isopiestic measurements reported here simultaneously reflect two fundamental properties of the system, i.e., the activity of water as a function of solution concentration and the occurrence of solid-liquid transitions. The thermodynamic model accurately reproduces the new isopiestic data as well as literature data for binary, ternary and higher-order subsystems. Because of its high accuracy in calculating vapor-liquid and solid-liquid equilibria, the model is suitable for studying deliquescence behavior of multicomponent salt systems
