    Mentor perceptions of effective mentoring programs

    After examining the literature surrounding the benefits and challenges, two program examples, and the professional development of mentor training programs, mentors receiving two different types of training in a mid-sized county in southeastern North Carolina are surveyed. Mentor perceptions of effective training are investigated. Then, the data is disaggregated by grade level including elementary school and middle/high school mentors. The literature trends and survey results are compared and contrasted. Recommendations are made for future training programs

    Material Issues in Space Shuttle Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels

    Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPV) store gases used in four subsystems for NASA's Space Shuttle Fleet. While there are 24 COPV on each Orbiter ranging in size from 19-40", stress rupture failure of a pressurized Orbiter COPV on the ground or in flight is a catastrophic hazard and would likely lead to significant damage/loss of vehicle and/or life and is categorized as a Crit 1 failure. These vessels were manufactured during the late 1970's and into the early 1980's using Titanium liners, Kevlar 49 fiber, epoxy matrix resin, and polyurethane coating. The COPVs are pressurized periodically to 3-5ksi and therefore experience significant strain in the composite overwrap. Similar composite vessels were developed in a variety of DOE Programs (primarily at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories or LLNL), as well as for NASA Space Shuttle Fleet Leader COPV program. The NASA Engineering Safety Center (NESC) formed an Independent Technical Assessment (ITA) team whose primary focus was to investigate whether or not enough composite life remained in the Shuttle COPV in order to provide a strategic rationale for continued COPV use aboard the Space Shuttle Fleet with the existing 25-year-old vessels. Several material science issues were examined and will be discussed in this presentation including morphological changes to Kevlar 49 fiber under stress, manufacturing changes in Kevlar 49 and their effect on morphology and tensile strength, epoxy resin strain, composite creep, degradation of polyurethane coatings, and Titanium yield characteristics

    Self-Dual Supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld Action

    We present a self-dual N=1 supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld action in three dimensions. This action is based on the supersymmetric generalized self-duality in odd dimensions developed originally by Townsend, Pilch and van Nieuwenhuizen. Even though such a self-duality had been supposed to be very difficult to generalize to a supersymmetrically interacting system, we show that Dirac-Born-Infeld action is actually compatible with supersymmetry and self-duality in three-dimensions. The interactions can be further generalized to arbitrary (non)polynomial interactions. As a by-product, we also show that a third-rank field strength leads to a more natural formulation of self-duality in 3D. We also show an interesting role played by the third-rank field strength leading to a supersymmetry breaking, in addition to accommodating a Chern-Simons form.Comment: 12 pages, no figure

    Superfield T-duality rules

    A geometric treatment of T-duality as an operation which acts on differential forms in superspace allows us to derive the complete set of T-duality transformation rules which relate the superfield potentials of D=10 type IIA supergravity with those of type IIB supergravity including Ramond-Ramond superfield potentials and fermionic supervielbeins.     We determine perturbatively the conformal manifold of N=2 Chern-Simons matter theories with the aim of checking in the three dimensional case the general prescription based on global symmetry breaking, recently introduced. We discuss in details few remarkable cases like the N=6 ABJM theory and its less supersymmetric generalizations with/without flavors.     Partial breaking of global D=4 supersymmetry, constrained superfields, and 3-brane actions

    We show that the connection between partial breaking of supersymmetry and nonlinear actions is not accidental and has to do with constraints that lead directly to nonlinear actions of the Born-Infeld type. We develop a constrained superfield approach that gives a universal way of deriving and using these actions. In particular, we find the manifestly supersymmetric form of the action of the 3-brane in 6-dimensional space in terms of N=1 superfields by using the tensor multiplet as a tool. We explain the relation between the Born-Infeld action and the model of partial N=2 supersymmetry breaking by a dual D-term. We represent the Born-Infeld action in a novel form quadratic in the gauge field strengths by introducing two auxiliary complex scalar fields; this makes duality covariance and the connection with the N=1 supersymmetric extension of the action very transparent. We also suggest a general procedure for deriving manifestly duality symmetric actions, explaining in a systematic way relations between previously discussed Lorentz covariant and noncovariant actions.Comment: 28 pages, harvmac. v4: a mistake in eq.(3.24) (pointed out by S.     Brane effective actions, kappa-symmetry and applications

    This is a review on brane effective actions, their symmetries and some of their applications. Its first part covers the Green–Schwarz formulation of single M- and D-brane effective actions focusing on kinematical aspects: the identification of their degrees of freedom, the importance of world volume diffeomorphisms and kappa symmetry to achieve manifest spacetime covariance and supersymmetry, and the explicit construction of such actions in arbitrary on-shell supergravity backgrounds. Its second part deals with applications. First, the use of kappa symmetry to determine supersymmetric world volume solitons. This includes their explicit construction in flat and curved backgrounds, their interpretation as Bogomol’nyi–Prasad–Sommerfield (BPS) states carrying (topological) charges in the supersymmetry algebra and the connection between supersymmetry and Hamiltonian BPS bounds. When available, I emphasise the use of these solitons as constituents in microscopic models of black holes. Second, the use of probe approximations to infer about the non-trivial dynamics of strongly-coupled gauge theories using the anti de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. This includes expectation values of Wilson loop operators, spectrum information and the general use of D-brane probes to approximate the dynamics of systems with small number of degrees of freedom interacting with larger systems allowing a dual gravitational description. Its final part briefly discusses effective actions for N D-branes and M2-branes. This includes both Super-Yang-Mills theories, their higher-order corrections and partial results in covariantising these couplings to curved backgrounds, and the more recent supersymmetric Chern–Simons matter theories describing M2-branes using field theory, brane constructions and 3-algebra considerations

    Predominant lifetime occupation and associations with painful and structural knee osteoarthritis: An international participant-level cohort collaboration

    Objective With adults working to older ages, occupation is an important, yet less modifiable domain of physical activity to consider in the risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA). This study aimed to investigate the association between predominant lifetime occupation and prevalent knee OA. Design Participant-level data were used from five international community-based cohorts: Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project, the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study, the Tasmanian Cohort Study and Framingham Osteoarthritis Study. Self-reported predominant occupation was categorized into sedentary, light, light manual and heavy manual levels. Cross-sectional associations between predominant lifetime occupation and knee OA outcomes including prevalence of radiographic knee OA (RKOA), symptomatic RKOA and knee pain, were assessed using logistic regression, accounting for cohort clustering. Results Data for 7391 participants were included. 24.7% reported sedentary lifetime occupation, 30.0% light, 35.9% light manual and 9.4% heavy manual. 43.3% presented with RKOA, 52.1% with knee pain and 29.0% with symptomatic RKOA. There was over a two-fold increase in the odds of having RKOA, knee pain and symptomatic RKOA in those whose with heavy manual compared to sedentary occupations ((odds ratio (OR): 2.14; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.79, 2.58), (OR: 2.19; 95% CI: 1.78, 2.70), (OR: 2.41; 95% CI: 1.94, 2.99) respectively). Conclusion This large international multi-cohort study demonstrated an association of heavy manual work with RKOA, symptomatic RKOA and knee pain. Measures that protect workers and are designed to reduce heavy manual related activities remain a priority to reduce the risk of knee OA
