Objective: To translate and establish the cross-cultural validation of the "Nursing Work Index - Revised" into Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: Internationally recommended methodological procedures were followed strictly: Translation, back-translation, cross-cultural validation by an expert panel, and pre-test of the instrument. Results: The translation and back-translation steps were satisfactory. The cross-cultural validation of the instrument by the expert panel resulted in changes in most of the items of Portuguese version of the instrument. These changes were necessary to establish the cross-cultural equivalency between the English and the Portuguese versions of the instrument. Pre-test of the Portuguese version of the instrument also suggested the need to revise some items to make them clearer. Conclusion: Despite the complexity of the process of the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of an instrument, the Brazilian Portuguese version of the "Nursing Work Index - Revised" was found to have cross-cultural equivalency with the original English version of the instrument.223281287Aiken, L.H., Patrician, P.A., Measuring organizational traits of hospitals: The Revised Nursing Work Index (2000) Nurs Res., 49 (3), pp. 146-153Aiken, L.H., Sloane, D.M., Lake, E.T., Satisfaction with inpatient acquired immunodeficiency syndrome care. Objective: To assess the reliability and validity of the Brazilian version of the Nursing Work Index-Revised among nursing aides and technicians. Methods: A methodological cross-sectional study was conducted in two teaching hospitals. The sample consisted of 150 subjects and data were collected with the use of a personal and professional information sheet, the Brazilian version of the Nursing Work Index-Revised for nursing aides and technicians and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results: Cronbach's alpha varied from 0.58 to 0.77 among the subscales of the Nursing Work Index-Revised and all its subscales obtained significant correlation with the subscales of the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the "job satisfaction," "intention to leave the job," and "nurse perception of quality of care" variables. Conclusion: The instrument presented reliability and validity for evaluating the practice environment of these professionals.274305310Aiken, L.H., Patrician, P.A., Measuring organizational traits of hospitals: The Revised Nursing Work Index (2000) Nurs Res, 49 (3), pp. 146-153Aiken, L.H., Clarke, S.P., Sloane, D.M., Lake, E.T., Cheney, T., Effects of hospital care environment on patient mortality and nurse outcomes (2008) J Nurs Adm, 38 (5), pp. 223-229Aiken, L.H., Sloane, D.M., Clarke, S.P., Poghosyan, L., Cho, E., You, L., Importance of work environments on hospital outcomes in nine countries (2011) Int J Qual Health Care, 23 (4), pp. 357-364Duffield, C., Diers, D., O'Brien-Pallas, L., Aisbett, Roche, M., King, M., Aisbett, K., Nursing, staffing, nursing workload, the work environment and patient outcomes (2011) Appl Nurs Res, 24 (4), pp. 244-255McHugh, M.D., Kelly, L.A., Smith, H.L., Wu, E.S., Vanak, J.M., Aiken, L.H., Lower mortality in magnet hospitals (2013) Med Care, 51 (5), pp. 382-388Friese, C.R., Lake, E.T., Aiken, L.H., Silber, J.H., Sochalski, J., Hospital nurse practice environments and outcomes for surgical oncology patients (2008) Health Serv Res, 43 (4), pp. 1145-1163Lucero, R.J., Lake, E.T., Aiken, L.H., Variations in nursing care quality across hospitals (2009) J Adv Nurs, 65 (11), pp. 2299-2310Van Bogaert, P., Meulemans, H., Clarke, S., Vermeyen, K., Van De Heyning, P., Hospital nurse practice environment, burnout, job outcomes and quality of care: Test of a structural equation model (2009) J Adv Nurs, 65 (10), pp. 2175-2185Franc¸a, F.M., Ferrari, R., Ferrari, D.C., Alves, E.D., Burnout and labour aspects in the nursing teams at two medium-sized hospitals (2012) Rev Latinoam Enferm, 20 (5), pp. 961-970. , PortuguesePoghosyan, L., Clarke, S.P., Finlayson, M., Aiken, L.H., Nurse burnout and quality of care: Cross-national investigation is six countries (2010) Res Nurs Health, 33 (4), pp. 288-298Gasparino, R.C., Guirardello, E.B., Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Nursing Work Index-Revised into Brazilian Portuguese (2009) Acta Paul Enferm, 22 (3), pp. 281-287Gasparino, R.C., Guirardello, E.B., Aiken, L.H., Validation of the Brazilian version of the Nursing Work Index-Revised (B-NWI-R) (2011) J Clin Nurs, 20 (23-24), pp. 3494-3501Orts-Cortés, M.I., Moreno-Casbas, T., Squires, A., Fuentelsaz-Gallego, C., Maciá-Soler, L., González-María, E., Content validity of the Spanish version of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (2013) Int J Nurs Stud, 50 (2), pp. 274-280Van Bogaert, P., Clarke, S., Vermeyen, K., Meulemans, H., Heyning, P.V., Practice environment and their association with nurse-reported outcomes in Belgian hospitals: Development and preliminary validation of a Dutch adaptation of the Revised Nursing Work Index (2009) Int J Nurs Stud, 46 (1), pp. 55-65Fuentelsaz-Gallego, C., Moreno-Casbas, M.T., González-María, E., Validation of the Spanish version of the questionnaire Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (2013) Int J Nurs Stud, 50 (2), pp. 274-28
