    Get PDF
The study of the isothermal vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of the binary mixtures n-heptane plus chlorobutane isomers (1-chlorobutane, 2-chlorobutane, 1-chloro-2-methylpropane or 2-chloro-2-methylpropane) at three different temperatures, T = 288.15, 298.15 and 308.15 K, is presented in this contribution. The experimental results were correlated using Wilson equation and the thermodynamic consistency of the data was checked by the van Ness method. Furthermore, two different methods have been used to predict the phase equilibrium in isothermal conditions: a pure group contribution method (modified-UNIFAC) and a group contribution equation of state (VTPR)

A case of insulinoma in the dog is described. Due to the initially unclear clinical picture, a differential diagnosis of weakness is carried out at first, of hypoglycemia later, and after the endocrinologycal tests (including the fructosamine test) and ultrasonographic examination (visualizing characteristic pancreatic nodules) a final diagnosis of insulinoma is made

Fabrication of ultrathin MIL-96(Al) films and study of CO2 adsorption/desorption processes using quartz crystal microbalance

This contribution reports the fabrication and characterization of ultrathin films of nanoparticles of the water stable microporous Al tricarboxylate metal organic framework MIL-96(Al). The preparation of MOF dispersions in chloroform has been optimized to obtain dense monolayer films of good quality, without nanoparticle agglomeration, at the air-water interface that can be deposited onto solid substrates of different nature without any previous substrate functionalization. The MOF studied shows great interest for CO2 capture because it presents Al3+ Lewis centers and hydroxyl groups that strongly interact with CO2 molecules. A comparative CO2 adsorption study on drop-cast, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) films using a Quartz Crystal Microbalance-based setup (QCM) has revealed that the CO2 uptake depends strongly on the film fabrication procedure and the storage conditions. Noteworthy the CO2 adsorption capacity of LB films is increased by 30% using a simple and green treatment (immersion of the film into water during 12 h just after film preparation). Finally, the stability of LB MOF monolayers upon several CO2 adsorption/desorption cycles has been demonstrated, showing that CO2 can be easily desorbed from the films at 303 K by flowing an inert gas (He). These results show that MOF LB monolayers can be of great interest for the development of MOF-based devices that require the use of very small MOF quantities, especially gas sensors

Coating of conducting and insulating threads with porous mof particles through langmuir-blodgett technique

    Get PDF
The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method is a well-known deposition technique for the fabrication of ordered monolayer and multilayer thin films of nanomaterials onto different substrates that plays a critical role in the development of functional devices for various applications. This paper describes detailed studies about the best coating configuration for nanoparticles of a porous metal-organic framework (MOF) onto both insulating or conductive threads and nylon fiber. We design and fabricate customized polymethylmethacrylate sheets (PMMA) holders to deposit MOF layers onto the threads or fiber using the LB technique. Two different orientations, namely, horizontal and vertical, are used to deposit MIL-96(Al) monolayer films onto five different types of threads and nylon fiber. These studies show that LB film formation strongly depends on deposition orientation and the type of threads or fiber. Among all the samples tested, cotton thread and nylon fiber with vertical deposition show more homogenous monolayer coverage. In the case of conductive threads, the MOF particles tend to aggregate between the conductive thread’s fibers instead of forming a continuous monolayer coating. Our results show a significant contribution in terms of MOF monolayer deposition onto single fiber and threads that will contribute to the fabrication of single fiber or thread-based devices in the future

ObjectivesTo determine the attitude of doctors towards the current model of primary care and to calculate its relationship with social and demographic and/or work variables.DesignMulti-centre cross-sectional study.SettingHealth centres in Area II of the Murcia region.ParticipantsAll general practitioners, family doctors and paediatricians in the health centres mentioned (54 in all).Main measurementsThe «Scale of attitudes towards the contents of primary health care» by Ballesteros et al. was used as the tool of evaluation. This scale provides both a total score and a specific score for each of its 7 dimensions.ResultsIn general, doctors´ attitudes were favourable (4.1 points average out of 5). We found a less favourable attitude in the dimension «Inclusion of second-level professionals in primary care», with family doctors most in agreement. The professionals working in centres on the periphery and those without tenure had a more positive attitude towards the current model, for the remaining variables.ConclusionsUnderstanding professionals´ attitudes and the variables related to them may serve as a basis for designing intervention strategies aimed at improving the quality of primary care and for the positive evolution of professionals working in PC

The anticancer effect related to disturbances in redox balance on Caco-2 cells caused by an alkynyl gold(I) complex

The alkynyl gold(I) derivative Au(C=CPh)(PTA)] (PTA = 1, 3, 5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) induces apoptosis in colorectal carcinoma tumour cells (Caco-2) without affecting to normal enterocytes. Au(C=CPh)(PTA)] is a slight lipophilic drug, stable in PBS (Phosphate Buffered Saline) and able to bind BSA (Bovin Serum Albumin) by hydrophobic interactions. Once inside the cell, Au(C=CPh)(PTA)] targets seleno proteins such as Thioredoxin Reductase 1, increasing ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) levels, reducing cell viability and proliferation and inducing mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic protein imbalance, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release and activation of caspases 9 and 3. Moreover, unlike other metal-based drugs such as cisplatin, Au(C=CPh)(PTA)] does not target nucleic acid, reducing the risk of side mutation in the DNA. In consequence, our results predict a promising future for Au(C=CPh)(PTA)] as a chemotherapeutic agent for colorectal carcinoma

In this work, the fabrication of ultrathin films containing the metal organic framework (MOF) Fe-MIL- 88B-NH2 by the Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) technique has been explored. MOF crystals of two different sizes (1.5 ± 0.3 and 0.07 ± 0.01 µm) have been synthesized and assembled at the air–liquid interface by the LB method. The effect of the subphase pH and particle size on the film formation process has been studied. Moreover, for the first time, mixed MOF+polymer (the commercial soluble polyimide Matrimid®) LB films containing different MOF loadings have been fabricated. These experiments show that it is possible to obtain ultrathin MOF + polymer films with a controlled MOF density. Furthermore, MOF particles are homogeneously distributed in the polymer matrix, even with very large amounts of MOF (up to 95 wt%). LB films have been incorporated into materials of different nature, including glass and mica substrates and also polymeric membranes based on polysulfone Udel® and PIM-1 (polymer of intrinsic microporosity), and the modification of water contact angle after LB film deposition has been analyzed
