    Climate Change and Temporal and Spatial Evolution of the Multifractal Universal Parameters in Ebro River Basin

    Multifractal techniques are applied to the study of rainfall daily time series over 14 stations from Ebro river Basin over the second half of XX century. The aim is to determine how climate change affects the evolution of the probability distribution of daily precipitation, through the values of universal multifractal parameters: C1; ; H y s for different periods of time. These will offer direct explanations of the shape of the distribution, especially about the extreme events: C1 is the mean intermittency codimension. When C1 increases the precipitation becoming less continuous and more sporadic in time. Therefore there is an increase of extremes. ; is a mesure of multifratility so an increase of it corresponds to a larger variation of the range of precipitation intensity, and thus also of extremes. H is the degree of non-conservation of the field, which measures the scale dependency of the average field. s; the maximal probable singularity that can be observed on a unique sample. It’s directly related to the ratio of the range and the mean of field. From the data collected, we perceive a decline in average rainfall, from 1980. But how is affected the global parameters in this situation?. Results vary according to different rainfall stations

    Lately, several researchers have pointed out that climate change is expected to increase temperatures and lower rainfall in Mediterranean regions, simultaneously increasing the intensity of extreme rainfall events. These changes could have consequences regarding rainfall regime, erosion, sediment transport and water quality, soil management, and new designs in diversion ditches. Climate change is expected to result in increasingly unpredictable and variable rainfall, in amount and timing, changing seasonal patterns and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Consequently, the evolution of frequency and intensity of drought periods is of most important as in agro-ecosystems many processes will be affected by them. Realising the complex and important consequences of an increasing frequency of extreme droughts at the Ebro River basin, our aim is to study the evolution of drought events at this site statistically, with emphasis on the occurrence and intensity of them. For this purpose, fourteen meteorological stations were selected based on the length of the rainfall series and the climatic classification to obtain a representative untreated dataset from the river basin. Daily rainfall series from 1957 to 2002 were obtained from each meteorological station and no-rain period frequency as the consecutive numbers of days were extracted. Based on this data, we study changes in the probability distribution in several sub-periods. Moreover we used the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) for identification of drought events in a year scale and then we use this index to fit log-linear models to the contingency tables between the SPI index and the sub-periods, this adjusted is carried out with the help of ANOVA inference

    Externalización de la función de recursos humanos: conceptos, retos y propuesta de sistematización

    In the current changing economic environment, organisations are searching for ever more flexibility in their quest towards competitiveness. One of the avenues towards flexibility is the outsourcing of some business processes, whether it is to achieve cost cutting or acquire expertise from external organisations. The human resource function or some of its components have also been subjected to outsourcing for some time (especially selection processes and training activities). However, the decision of what to outsource, how, when, and to whom in human resource is not exempt from risks. This article reviews the main concepts, logic and challenges to outsourcing the human resource function and it generates an agenda for research in order to orient researchers’ efforts to reach more conclusive evidence about the practice of human resource outsourcing. It concludes with a proposal for academics and practitioners alike in order to think of outsourcing as a process, and it systematises the steps of this process, from the initial identification of the need to outsource to the long term consequences of the decision of outsourcing the human resource management function.En el actual entorno económico, las organizaciones buscan constantemente nuevas formas de flexibilidad en su esfuerzo para devenir competitivas. Una de las avenidas hacia la flexibilización de las organizaciones es la externalización o outsourcing de algunos procesos empresariales, tanto si es con el objetivo de recortar costes como con el de adquirir experiencia y know-how de organizaciones externas. La función de recursos humanos o algunos de sus componentes también han estado sujetos a la externalización desde hace ya tiempo (especialmente procesos de selección o actividades de formación). Sin embargo, la decisión sobre qué externalizar, cómo, cuándo y a quién es una elección no desprovista de ciertos riesgos. Este artículo revisa los principales conceptos, lógica y retos a la externalización de la función de recursos humanos, y genera una agenda de investigación para orientar los esfuerzos de los estudiosos del tema a conseguir evidencias más concluyentes sobre la práctica de la externalización de recursos humanos. Se concluye con una propuesta dirigida tanto a investigadores como a directivos invitándoles a pensar sobre la externalización como un proceso. Para finalizar, se sistematizan las fases de este proceso, desde la identificación inicial de la necesidad de externalizar hasta las consecuencias a largo plazo que pueden asociarse a la decisión de haber externalizado la función de recursos humanos

    Change of extreme rainfall indexes at Ebro River Basin

    The purpose of this work is to provide a description of the heavy rainfall phenomenon on statistical tools from a Spanish region. We want to quantify the effect of the climate change to verify the rapidity of its evolution across the variation of the probability distributions. Our conclusions have special interest for the agrarian insurances, which may make estimates of costs more realistically. In this work, the analysis mainly focuses on: The distribution of consecutive days without rain for each gauge stations and season. We estimate density Kernel functions and Generalized Pareto Distribution (GPD) for a network of station from the Ebro River basin until a threshold value u. We can establish a relation between distributional parameters and regional characteristics. Moreover we analyze especially the tail of the probability distribution. These tails are governed by law of power means that the number of events n can be expressed as the power of another quantity x : n(x) = x? . ? can be estimated as the slope of log-log plot the number of events and the size. The most convenient way to analyze n(x) is using the empirical probability distribution. Pr(X mayor que x) ? x-?. The distribution of rainfall over percentile of order 0.95 from wet days at the seasonal scale and in a yearly scale with the same treatment of tails than in the previous section

    Universal Multifractal description applied to precipitation pattern in the Ebro River Basin

    Water supplies in the Ebro River Basin are increasingly stressed, especially during the summer season. The year-to-year fluctuations in rainfall over this area exert vital influence on the regional hydrology, agriculture and several related industries in the region. Repeated anomalous rainfall in recent decades has had a devastating impact on this region, both socially and economically. We characterised the change in the rainfall variability pattern in the Ebro River Basin using universal multifractal (UM) analysis, which estimates the concentration of the data around the precipitation average (C1, codimension average), the degree of multiscaling behaviour in time (α index) and the maximum probable singularity in the rainfall distribution (γs ). Fourteen meteorological stations were selected based on the length of rainfall series and the climatic classification to obtain a representative untreated data set from the river basin. Daily rainfall series from 1957 to 2002 were obtained from each meteorological station and subdivided (1957–1980 and 1981–2002) to analyse the difference between the 2 periods. The general scenario observed in this study, through the UM parameters, can be summarised as follows: the range of variation of precipitation amounts was spatially more homogenous in 1980–2002 than in 1957–1979; at the same time, there is higher frequency of dry periods at different scales in 1980–2002; and in almost all of the stations, the range of precipitation over the years has been decreasing at a lower rate than the rainfall average. We then analysed the evolution of the UM parameters from 1957 to 2002. Continuous variations in C1 and α were found for 2 of the stations, indicating that a precipitation regime change has begun in the last few decades and should be considered in the agricultural development of the region

    Spatial and temporal precipitation patterns of the Ebro River Basin, Spain

    The Ebro River Basin, with around 85 000 km2 and located in NE Spain, is characterized by the high spatial heterogeneity of its geology, topography, climatology and land use. Rainfall is one of the most important climatic variables studied owing to its non-homogenous behaviour in event and intensity, which creates drought, water runoff and soil erosion with negative environmental and social consequences. In this work we characterized the rainfall variability pattern in the Ebro River Basin using universal multifractal (UM) analysis, which estimates the concentration of the data around the precipitation average (C1, codimension average), the degree of multiscaling behaviour in time (? index) and the maximum probable singularity in the rainfall distribution ( s). A spatial and temporal analysis of the UM parameters is applied to study the possible changes. With this porpoise, 60 daily rainfall series were selected from 132 synthetic series generated by Luna and Balairón (AEMet). These daily rainfall series present a length of 60 years, from 1950 to 2009. Each one of them was subdivided (1950?1970 and 1980?2009) to analyse the difference between the two periods. The range of variation of precipitation amounts and the frequency of dry events between both periods are discussed, as well as the evolution of the UM parameters through the years

    Las técnicas utilizadas en el análisis de la señal de fibrilación ventricular (FV), obtenida mediante sistemas de mapeado utilizando matrices de electrodos, extraen información del proceso a partir de parámetros calculados principalmente en el dominio del tiempo o de la frecuencia. El presente trabajo plantea la aplicación del índice de regularidad (IR), propuesto inicialmente para caracterizar la fibrilación auricular humana, a la señal de FV en un modelo experimental de corazón animal. Los resultados obtenidos muestran que el IR permite extraer información de los mapas de FV no disponible de forma directa cuando se estudian mediante los métodos clásicos en el tiempo o la frecuencia, cuantificando el grado de modificación en la morfología de las ondas de activación durante la FV

    Relación entre el espectro y la regularidad en la señal de fibrilación ventricular modificada por el ejercicio físico

    El presente trabajo estudia las modificaciones intrínsecas que el ejercicio físico produce en la respuesta cardíaca durante la FV. Se han calculado dos parámetros relacionados con el espectro de la señal (FD: frecuencia dominante, y EN: energía normalizada), y otro relacionado con la regularidad de las OAL (IR: índice de regularidad), Se ha realizado un análisis de correlación entre los tres parámetros para valorar su grado de complementariedad. Se consideraron dos grupos de conejos: control (G1: sin entrenamiento, N=10) y entrenados (G2, N=9). Se utilizó un electrodo matricial de 240 canales localizado en ventrículo izquierdo de corazón aislado de conejo perfundido mediante un sistema de Langendorff. La FV se indujo por estimulación a frecuencias crecientes. Los resultados muestran que el grupo entrenado presenta una mayor regularidad de la señal (IR: G1: 0,757+-0,091; G2: 0,845+-0,084; p<0.001), así como menor FD (G1: 18.23±2.96Hz; G2: 14.13+-1.73Hz; p<0.001) y dispersión espectral (EN: G1: 0,138+-0.105; G2: 0,293+-0,176; p<0.001). El análisis de las relaciones entre parámetros muestra correlaciones significativas entre los parámetros para todos los casos excepto para IR y FD en G2, por lo que estos parámetros proporcionan información complementaria, ya que analizan aspectos diferentes de la señal como la morfología de las ondas de activación y su frecuencia. La existencia de correlación entre ambas para G1 puede ser debida a otras causas, tales como las modificaciones en ambos factores inducidas por la presencia de reentradas o colisiones entre frentes de activación.. Como conclusión, los resultados obtenidos sugieren que el entrenamiento físico produce una respuesta cardíaca más estable ante FV, debida a modificaciones intrínsecas en las características electrofisiológicas cardíacas

    Modifications on regularity and spectrum of ventricular fibrillation signal induced by physical training

    The objective of this work is to study the modifications on cardiac response during ventricular fibrillation (VF) induced by physical training. The analysis was performed in the frequency domain of VF, and the regularity of the signal was also considered. Two sets of records were acquired: control (G1: without physical training, N=10), and trained (G2, N=9). Cardiac registers were obtained using a 240-electrodes matrix located on left ventricle of isolated rabbit heart. A Langendorff system was used to maintain the heart perfusion. VF was induced by increased frequencies. To analyze the time course of VF, records were processed in 4-second segments. For every segment and channel, Welch periodogram with Hanning window, two non-overlapped sections and zero padding, was computed. Parameters considered in frequency domain are: dominant frequency (DF) and normalized energy (NE: spectral energy in the window DF±1Hz, normalized by spectral energy in 5-35Hz band). For every segment and channel, a regularity analysis of VF was performed, obtaining the regularity index (RI), which is a measure of similarity among local activation waves present in every channel. Mean values for the parameters (DF, NE and RI) of the whole set of electrodes were computed for every segment. Obtained results show that DF is lower for trained rabbits (G1: 18.234±1, 241Hz; G2: 14.370±0, 866Hz; p<0.001). NE is greater for this group (G1: 0.140±0.006; G2: 0.263±0.017; p<0.001), suggesting a greater spectral concentration around DF. Finally, a greater regularity has been observed in the fibrillation signal for trained group (IR, G1: 0.756±0.026; G2: 0.834±0.014; p<0.001). As a summary, the results suggest that both spectral characteristics and regularity of VF signal are clearly different for G1 and G2 groups. The trained group (G2) shows greater regularity, lower DF and spectral dispersion. These factors should be interpreted as a more stable cardiac response to V

    Analysis of spatial and temporal evolution of regularity maps during ventricular fibrillation

    The analysis of cardiac mapping allows investigating the structure of ventricular fibrillation (VF). This work analyzes regions of interest (ROI) on cardiac maps obtained from the regularity analysis of VF records, providing information about signal regularity at each time instant and its spatial distribution. Cardiac registers were obtained using a 240- electrodes matrix located on left ventricle of isolated rabbit heart. A Langendorff system was used to maintain the heart perfusion. VF was induced by increased frequencies. Two groups of records were considered: control (G1: without physical training, N=10), and trained (G2, N=9). Records were processed in consecutive 4-second segments. Regularity index (RI) was obtained for every segment and channel. RI is a measure of similarity degree among local activation waves for every channel. A map with the RI value of each channel was computed for the 82 register segments. To analyze the spatial distribution of RI, a threshold value was determined experimentally and applied to the map in order to obtain the ROI. Two parameters were calculated: ROI spatial number (ROIsn, a measure of spatial fragmentation), and ROI spatial area (ROIsa, the percentage of area map occupied by ROI). In case of the time course of ROI, two additional parameters were computed: the number of electrodes which value had changed respect to the threshold in two consecutive maps (ROIen, which is related with the change size), and the cumulative absolute differences of RI values for the electrodes which are changed (ROIed). Obtained results for spatial analysis show that the number of ROI is lower for trained rabbits (ROIsn; G1: 4.465±1.120; G2: 2.,227±0.623; p<0.001), but ROI spatial area is greater than the control group (ROIsa; G1: 76.235±5.355%; G2: 88.163±2.885%; p<0.001). Time-course analysis shows that more electrodes change between consecutive maps in the control group (ROIen, G1: 22.455±6.702; G2: 13.877±2.485; p<0.001). No significant differences were found for ROIed (G1: 18.509±6.932; G2: 18.619±4.196; n.s.). To conclude, ROI analysis on RI maps applied to trained and no trained rabbits groups shows that VF cardiac response is more irregular and spatially fragmented in no trained group. In addition, regularity maps are more stable with time in trained group
