A lean six sigma framework for continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector
This article aims to explore synergies between Lean Production (LP) and Six Sigma principles in order to propose a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) framework for continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector. The Three-Dimensional LSS Framework seeks to provide various combinations about the integration between LP principles, DMAIC cycle and PDCA cycle to support operations management needs. Design/methodology/approach - The research method is composed of two main steps: (i) diagnostic of current problems and proposition of a conceptual framework that qualitatively integrates synergistic aspects of LP and Six Sigma; and (ii) analysis of the application of the construct through semi-structured interviews with leaders from oil and gas companies to assess and validate the proposed framework. Findings - As a result, a conceptual framework of LSS is developed contemplating the integration of LP and Six Sigma and providing a systemic and holistic approach to problemsolving through continuous and incremental improvement in the oil and gas sector. Originality/value - This research is different from previous studies because it integrates LP principles, DMAIC and PDCA cycles into a unique framework that fulfils a specific need of oil and gas sector. It presents a customized LSS framework that guides wastes and costs reduction, while enhances quality and reduces process variability to elevate efficiency in operations management of this sector. The paper type is an original research that present new and original scientific findings.N/
The blaSHV-5 gene is encoded in a compound transposon duplicated in tandem in Enterobacter cloacae
AbstractThe presence of blaSHV-5 is described in a compound transposon, duplicated in tandem and flanked by IS26 copies on a 70-kb conjugative plasmid (pHNM1), in an Enterobacter cloacae strain associated with a nosocomial outbreak that occurred in Mexico
Evaluation of the nutritional quality of Chaetoceros muelleri Schütt (Chaetocerotales: Chaetocerotaceae) and Isochrysis sp. (Isochrysidales: isochrysidaceae) grown outdoors for the larval development of Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) (Decapoda: Penaeidae)
The biomass, proximal composition and fatty acid profile of Isochrysis sp., Chaetoceros muelleri and their mixture, grown under greenhouse conditions, were evaluated. The nutritional value of both species supplied as the monoalgal (Chaetoceros muelleri: Diet I, and Isochrysis sp. Diet II) and mixed diet (Diet III) for larval Litopenaeus vannamei was also assessed on the basis of the development and biochemical composition of the larvae. The highest protein levels were obtained in Diets I and II (40% and 35%, respectively). No significant differences in larval survival were found among the diets; however, larvae fed on Diet II had the lowest mean larval length
An empirical analysis of supply and manufacturing risk and business performance: A Chinese manufacturing supply chain perspective
Purpose – This study explores the importance and impact of supply and manufacturing
risk management upon business performance within the context of Chinese
manufacturing supply chains.
Design/Methodology/Approach – A two phased multi-method approach was adopted,
which included a survey questionnaire to practitioners in Chinese manufacturing supply
chains followed by semi-structured interviews. The findings included 103 valid survey
responses complemented by six semi-structured interviews.
Findings – The results indicate that in Chinese manufacturing context supply risk and
manufacturing risk management are both vital for business performance. A high
correlation between business and manufacturing risk management performance exists,
however no significant impact of supplier dependency, systematic purchasing, maturity
of production and supply chain, and human resources was found despite previously these
elements being regarded as key influencers for supply and manufacturing risk
management performance. The Chinese manufacturing supply chain indicated that
elements such as the supplier and customer orientation, flexibility, manufacturing and
supply risk highly connotes with business performance.
Theoretical/Practical implications – In the current unpredictable and volatile business
environment the competitiveness of manufacturing supply chains to a large extent depend
on their ability to identify, assess and manage the manufacturing and supply risks. The
findings of this study will assist supply chain managers in taking decision on
manufacturing and supply risk management and reducing the uncertainty upon their
business performance.
Originality/value – The supply chain risk has been widely explored within the context of
individual case studies, or standalone models focusing on either supply or manufacturing
risk in supply chains, however to what extent this has been applicable to a wider context
and its impact upon business process has not been explored. Hence, this study
simultaneously has analysed manufacturing risk and supply risk and its impact upon
Chinese manufacturing supply chains business performance. Moreover, this study uses a
combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, which is often limited in this area.
Finally, the institutional theory lens offers novel insights in better understanding the
factors that can affect the impact of supply and manufacturing risk management upon
business performance in those contexts, such as China, where the institutional aspect
presents specific features
Benevolent characteristics promote cooperative behaviour among humans
Cooperation is fundamental to the evolution of human society. We regularly
observe cooperative behaviour in everyday life and in controlled experiments
with anonymous people, even though standard economic models predict that they
should deviate from the collective interest and act so as to maximise their own
individual payoff. However, there is typically heterogeneity across subjects:
some may cooperate, while others may not. Since individual factors promoting
cooperation could be used by institutions to indirectly prime cooperation, this
heterogeneity raises the important question of who these cooperators are. We
have conducted a series of experiments to study whether benevolence, defined as
a unilateral act of paying a cost to increase the welfare of someone else
beyond one's own, is related to cooperation in a subsequent one-shot anonymous
Prisoner's dilemma. Contrary to the predictions of the widely used inequity
aversion models, we find that benevolence does exist and a large majority of
people behave this way. We also find benevolence to be correlated with
cooperative behaviour. Finally, we show a causal link between benevolence and
cooperation: priming people to think positively about benevolent behaviour
makes them significantly more cooperative than priming them to think
malevolently. Thus benevolent people exist and cooperate more
Mesh-related complications were responsible for a warning issued by the FDA in 2008 and they stopped being considered rare events. The most common complications are acute urinary retention, bleeding, recurrence or persistence of UI, erosion of the urethra, and mesh infection.AimsTo determine the complications derived from surgical UI treatment with the placement of suburethral mesh in women.Material and methodPatients diagnosed with UI that underwent anti-incontinence surgery with the placement of vaginal mesh within the time frame of 2007 and 2014 were analyzed. Mesh placement complications and the recovery of continence were evaluated.ResultsA synthetic mesh sling was placed in 58 patients with a mean age of 56 years. A total of 51% of the patients had stress urinary incontinence and 49% had mixed urinary incontinence. Early complications were: 4 patients with acute urine retention. Late complications were: urethral or vaginal pain (12.2%), dyspareunia (20%), and mesh extrusion (10%) that was managed through mesh removal; 2 of those patients required surgical procedures. Twelve percent of the patients presented with de novo urgency, 90.2% progressed with no incontinence, 9.7% presented with postoperative UI, and 2 patients had no improvement.DiscussionAlthough small, our case series showed a low long-term complication rate with the use of surgical mesh, compared with the majority of case series that demonstrate a re-operation rate>70%, as well as numerous cases of mesh removal. Thus, it is our experience that suburethral slings continue to be an adequate UI management option.ConclusionsSuburethral slings are a safe and effective option in UI management

Use of Genetic Stock Identification Data for Comparison of the Ocean Spatial Distribution, Size at Age, and Fishery Exposure of an Untagged Stock and Its Indicator: California Coastal versus Klamath River Chinook Salmon
Managing weak stocks in mixed-stock fisheries often relies on proxies derived from data-rich indicator stocks. For example, full cohort reconstruction of tagged Klamath River fall run Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) of northern California, USA, enables the use of detailed models to inform management. Information gained from this stock is also used in the management of the untagged, threatened California Coastal Chinook (CCC) salmon stock, by capping Klamath harvest rates. To evaluate use of this proxy, we used genetic stock identification (GSI) data to compare the two stocks\u27 size-at-age and ocean distribution, two key factors influencing fishery exposure. We developed methods to account for both sampling and genetic assignment uncertainty in catch estimates. We found that, in 2010, the stocks were similar in size-at-age early in the year (age-3 and age-4), but CCC fish were larger later in the year. The stocks appeared similarly distributed early in the year (2010), but more concentrated near their respective source rivers later in the year (2010 and 2011). If these results are representative, relative fishery impacts on the two stocks might scale similarly early in the year but management changes later in the year might have differing impacts on the two stocks
