An annotated checklist of the Tephritidae (Diptera) of Florida

    Get PDF
A total of 73 species of tephritid flies has been recorded from Florida since the early 1800s. Of these, 7 species are considered to represent occasional waifs or accidental introductions from surrounding regions that are not known to have established populations in Florida; 6 are exotic pests which failed to colonize or were extirpated; and 7 species are represented only by early literature records and are considered dubious for the state. Thus, the tephritid fauna of Florida currently comprises a total of 53 species of which 1 species is precinctive to the state and considered to be endangered

Performance of two 10-lb/sec centrifugal compressors with different blade and shroud thicknesses operating over a range of Reynolds numbers

    Get PDF
Centrifugal compressors often cannot be directly scaled to very small flow sizes because of structural and manufacturing limitations. The inability to directly scale all design parameters leads to a performance loss other than that which can be associated with the lower Reynolds number. A 10-lb/sec centrifugal compressor was scaled down to 2-lb/sec where adjustments to blade and shroud thickness and fillet radii were required. The modified 2-lb/sec compressor was then directly scaled back up to 10 lb/sec so that the effect of the modifications could be determined. The performance of the two 10-lb/sec compressors is compared over a range of speed and mass flow. The effect of variations in Reynolds number, impeller tip clearance, and shroud thickness on compressor performance is also presented

Planned improvements to the Owens Valley frequency-agile interferometer

Three small antennas will be added to the OVRO interferometer to form a five-element solar-dedicated array. This would provide up to 7 or 10 baselines (compared to the present 1 or 3). This would be sufficient to apply microwave diagnostics to most active region and burst sources. By using frequency-synthesis it would also provide an imaging capability comparable to that of an approximately 100 baseline interferometer. Expansion of the array is discussed

A DECISION MODEL TO ASSESS CATTLE FEEDING PRICE RISK

    Get PDF
Traditional break-even/fed cattle price projections do not provide adequate risk information to feeders, investors, lenders, and other stakeholders interested in cattle feeding decisions. The objectives of this study were two-fold: 1) develop a spreadsheet model that could estimate the net income distribution surrounding a cattle placement decision based on historical errors of futures based price forecasts, and 2) determine whether information generated from the model can be used to improve placement and marketing decisions. To accomplish objective 1, model was developed that could estimate the income distribution around a pen of cattle under a cash speculating and short hedge pricing strategy. Distribution estimates were based on 7 alternative forecast horizons and were derived from historical forecast errors. To accomplish objective 2, decision rules were developed that allow the feeder to specify the maximum probability he/she is willing to risk losing a specified level of income. These decision rules were compared to random and naive decision rules by simulating the outcomes over 168 discrete six months feeding periods between 1987 and 2000. Risk averse decision rules were successful in signaling highly unprofitable feeding periods, but also filtered out highly profitable feeding periods.Livestock Production/Industries, Marketing,

New records of Tephritidae (Diptera) from Great Smoky Mountains National Park - 2

Thirty additional species of tephritid flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) from Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), including historical records, are presented together with information on host(s), if known, distributions, and life histories. This brings the total number of tephritid flies recorded from GSMNP to 46
