Echoes of the sea around us—Human hopes in the balance
Earth’s human life-support system shows signs of failing. Human capacity to alter landscapes and the atmosphere is reaching catastrophic levels. Only the oceans seemed to be beyond control, but still they are not beyond human influence. Limited experience in protecting nature’s integrity, health, and resilience in seascapes offers the potential to reverse sliding global environmental conditions by providing realistic expectations, offering moral fortitude, stimulating imagination, and proffering hope. The ocean’s capacity to evoke human awe and inspiration may be sufficient to focusmankind on the global existential threats we face. It is now vital to heed Rachael Carson’s 1937 prescient observation “Against this cosmic background the lifetime of a particular plant or animal appears not as a drama complete in itself but only as a brief interlude in a panorama of endless change.” The world will keep spinning, whether people are able to enjoy the ride or not
Blade Tip Rubbing Stress Prediction
An analytical model was constructed to predict the magnitude of stresses produced by rubbing a turbine blade against its tip seal. This model used a linearized approach to the problem, after a parametric study, found that the nonlinear effects were of insignificant magnitude. The important input parameters to the model were: the arc through which rubbing occurs, the turbine rotor speed, normal force exerted on the blade, and the rubbing coefficient of friction. Since it is not possible to exactly specify some of these parameters, values were entered into the model which bracket likely values. The form of the forcing function was another variable which was impossible to specify precisely, but the assumption of a half-sine wave with a period equal to the duration of the rub was taken as a realistic assumption. The analytical model predicted resonances between harmonics of the forcing function decomposition and known harmonics of the blade. Thus, it seemed probable that blade tip rubbing could be at least a contributor to the blade-cracking phenomenon. A full-scale, full-speed test conducted on the space shuttle main engine high pressure fuel turbopump Whirligig tester was conducted at speeds between 33,000 and 28,000 RPM to confirm analytical predictions

Teaching ESOL To Adult Competencies
The author developed and implemented a program using adult based competencies in the ESOL classroom. A control group was taught the same grammatical skills by traditional methods without including adult-based competencies. The author\u27s purpose was to see whether the group taught with techniques which included adult competencies would master each skill better than the control group. Thus, a conclusion could be reached that teaching to adult competencies affects learning performance in a positive way. The basic steps of the program were to identify the problem; set the objectives; plan the activities on a daily schedule; evaluate the results; and formulate plans for its continued and expanded use in the future. Post-test results demonstrated significant positive learning performance of the group taught using adult-based competencies. Appendices include questionnaires used for students and teachers, pre and post-tests with the test results, and a placement test
