    A survey to investigate the association of pain, foot disability and quality of life with corns

    Background Corns are a common foot problem affecting a large proportion of the population. This study describes the characteristics of corns experienced by 201 participants taking part in a randomised controlled trial to investigate associations between demographic and corn parameters on pain, foot related disability and quality of life (QoL). Methods Pain from the main (index) corn was measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS); foot related disability was assessed with the Foot Disability Questionnaire (now known as the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index) and quality of life was recorded with the EQ-5D questionnaire. The effect of demographic and corn parameters on the pain and quality of life outcomes was assessed with analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods. The effect of the same factors on a linear combination of the foot-related disability outcome measures was assessed using multivariate ANOVA methods. Pain was also tested for its mediating properties on the causal pathway between the independent variables and quality of life. Results The mean pain score was 5.29 points on a 10 cm VAS, with females reporting substantively higher pain levels than males. Age affected foot-related disability, with lower levels on all domains of the MFPDI reported in older participants; each year of advancing age was associated with falls of: 0.009 points on the Concern about Appearance (CA) domain; 0.047 points on the Functional Limitation (FL) domain and 0.048 points on the Pain Intensity (PI) domain. Sex and corn type also affected disability, with higher scores reported by females and participants with plantar corns. Conclusions The effect of pain was shown to mediate the relationship between sex and foot-related disability. The presence of plantar corns has a more detrimental effect on QoL than dorsal/inter-digital corns

B. pseudomallei was isolated from a water storage tank and from spray formed in a pH-raising aerator unit.     Correlated Strength in Nuclear Spectral Function

    We have carried out an (e,e'p) experiment at high momentum transfer and in parallel kinematics to measure the strength of the nuclear spectral function S(k,E) at high nucleon momenta k and large removal energies E. This strength is related to the presence of short-range and tensor correlations, and was known hitherto only indirectly and with considerable uncertainty from the lack of strength in the independent-particle region.     Measurement of Nuclear Transparency for the A(e,e' pi^+) Reaction

    We have measured the nuclear transparency of the A(e,e' pi^+) process in ^{2}H,^{12}C, ^{27}Al, ^{63}Cu and ^{197}Au targets. These measurements were performed at the Jefferson Laboratory over a four momentum transfer squared range Q^2 = 1.1 - 4.7 (GeV/c)^2. The nuclear transparency was extracted as the super-ratio of (σA/σH)(\sigma_A/\sigma_H) from data to a model of pion-electroproduction from nuclei without pi-N final state interactions. The Q^2 and atomic number dependence of the nuclear transparency both show deviations from traditional nuclear physics expectations, and are consistent with calculations that include the quantum chromodynamical phenomenon of color transparency.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figs Changes to figure 2 and 3 (error band updated and theory curves updated

    Longitudinal-Transverse Separations of Structure Functions at Low Q2Q^{2} for Hydrogen and Deuterium

    We report on a study of the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio, R=σL/σTR=\sigma_L/\sigma_T, at low values of xx and Q2Q^{2}, as determined from inclusive inelastic electron-hydrogen and electron-deuterium scattering data from Jefferson Lab Hall C spanning the four-momentum transfer range 0.06 <Q2<2.8 < Q^{2} < 2.8 GeV2^{2}. Even at the lowest values of Q2Q^{2}, RR remains nearly constant and does not disappear with decreasing Q2Q^{2}, as expected.     Cross sections for the p(e,eπ+e,e'\pi^{+})n process on 1^1H, 2^2H, 12^{12}C, 27^{27}Al, 63^{63}Cu and 197^{197}Au targets were measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) in order to extract the nuclear transparencies. Data were taken for four-momentum transfers ranging from Q2Q^2=1.1 to 4.8 GeV2^2 for a fixed center of mass energy of WW=2.14 GeV. The ratio of σL\sigma_L and σT\sigma_T was extracted from the measured cross sections for 1^1H, 2^2H, 12^{12}C and 63^{63}Cu targets at Q2Q^2 = 2.15 and 4.0 GeV2^2 allowing for additional studies of the reaction mechanism. The experimental setup and the analysis of the data are described in detail including systematic studies needed to obtain the results. The results for the nuclear transparency and the differential cross sections as a function of the pion momentum at the different values of Q2Q^2 are presented. Global features of the data are discussed and the data are compared with the results of model calculations for the p(e,eπ+e,e'\pi^{+})n reaction from nuclear targets.Comment: 28 pages, 19 figures, submited to PR

    Scaling study of the pion electroproduction cross sections and the pion form factor

    The 1^{1}H(e,eπ+e,e^\prime \pi^+)n cross section was measured for a range of four-momentum transfer up to Q2Q^2=3.91 GeV2^2 at values of the invariant mass, WW, above the resonance region. The Q2Q^2-dependence of the longitudinal component is consistent with the Q2Q^2-scaling prediction for hard exclusive processes. This suggests that perturbative QCD concepts are applicable at rather low values of Q2Q^2. Pion form factor results, while consistent with the Q2Q^2-scaling prediction, are inconsistent in magnitude with perturbative QCD calculations. The extraction of Generalized Parton Distributions from hard exclusive processes assumes the dominance of the longitudinal term. However, transverse contributions to the cross section are still significant at Q2Q^2=3.91 GeV2^2.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
