    MULES IN SOUTHERN AGRICULTURE: REVISITED

    Get PDF
This article provides additional empirical evidence concerning the choice of the mule as the dominant draft animal in southern agricultural production in the latter 19th and early 20th century. While the mule was uniquely suited to the crops and climate of the region, two divergent arguments have been presented as to why the mule was the dominant draft animal in southern agricultural production. This research reevaluates these arguments and provides evidence that it was, in fact, the characteristics of this hybrid that made it the preferred draft animal for the South.mule, land owners, part owners, and managers, share tenants, sharecroppers, principal agent problem, Farm Management, N51, O13, Q12, Q13,

The Social Responsibility of Lawyers in Their Professional Capacity

    Get PDF
The lawyer in securities regulation has a responsibility to the public to make an adequate investigation to determine the truthfulness of all matters requiring disclosure. Protection of the public through the federal securities disclosure system relies upon the proper behavior of the professionals in the field. However, the developing actions and attitudes of the SEC toward attorney responsibility in securities regulation do not reflect a general assertion that legal counsel has a social responsibility that must prevail over the interests of the client. The objective of federal securities law to protect the investor and the public is the distinguishing factor. In securities regulation the primary responsibility of the lawyer is to effectuate compliance with federal regulations. The primary social responsibility of all lawyers is to provide guidance to their clients to enable them to comply with the law or to achieve their desired goals in a lawful manner

Analytical aerodynamic model of a high alpha research vehicle wind-tunnel model

    Get PDF
A 6 DOF analytical aerodynamic model of a high alpha research vehicle is derived. The derivation is based on wind-tunnel model data valid in the altitude-Mach flight envelope centered at 15,000 ft altitude and 0.6 Mach number with Mach range between 0.3 and 0.9. The analytical models of the aerodynamics coefficients are nonlinear functions of alpha with all control variable and other states fixed. Interpolation is required between the parameterized nonlinear functions. The lift and pitching moment coefficients have unsteady flow parts due to the time range of change of angle-of-attack (alpha dot). The analytical models are plotted and compared with their corresponding wind-tunnel data. Piloted simulated maneuvers of the wind-tunnel model are used to evaluate the analytical model. The maneuvers considered are pitch-ups, 360 degree loaded and unloaded rolls, turn reversals, split S's, and level turns. The evaluation finds that (1) the analytical model is a good representation at Mach 0.6, (2) the longitudinal part is good for the Mach range 0.3 to 0.9, and (3) the lateral part is good for Mach numbers between 0.6 and 0.9. The computer simulations show that the storage requirement of the analytical model is about one tenth that of the wind-tunnel model and it runs twice as fast

A Scriptural and Philosophical Evaluation of the Open Model of God as an Ontological Necessity and Its Compatibility with Evangelical Theology

    Get PDF
The Christian movement known as evangelicalism possesses a long and complex history or theological and practical development and expression. Through the years, the term evangelical has carried a wide range of meanings. While modern day evangelicalism is by no means a monolithic movement, its foundation across the spectrum lies in its affirmation of three major theological principles: (1) the complete reliability and final authority of Scripture in matters of faith and practice; (2) the necessity of a personal faith in Jesus Christ ... ; and (3) the urgency of seeking actively the conversion of sinners to Christ. The first theological truth is the most important for the question at hand

Active Development of Tacit Knowledge: ADTK In a World Without Farmers

    Get PDF
Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) and extensions such as Transformative Learning Theory offer significant potential for skill development later in life – reskilling. Despite wide acceptance and deployment, practitioners are still obliged to design their own methods and activities in order to implement these theories. This paper introduces a novel curricular model, Active Development of Tacit Knowledge (ADTK). Educators can use ADTK to effectively implement and scale ELT. Agricultural Education, specifically the training of new farmers, is used as a sample context to demonstrate ADTK. In new-farmer education, it is necessary to compress the educational cycles of dozens of years of seasonal feedback and generations of familial knowledge to replicate a farm upbringing, often within just weeks or months. Increasing global demand for farm products along with economic constraints limit options for learn by doing on the farm where a poor understanding of natural processes can cause a new farmer to irreparably harm the environment of production. Globally, highly productive farmers are aging out of production, adding urgency to the demand for competent new producers. The combination of system stresses requires teaching methodology that accurately develops frequent and repetitive on-farm decision-making processes that are production environment centered. Yet many new practitioners possess pre-existing and variable skills, knowledge, or information that may not be compatible with their successful farm management needs. ADTK encourages learners to draw out tacit knowledge and restructure pre-existing beliefs with new information into a stable foundation from which a more complex theoretical development and mastery of skills can evolve.
