Near-field antenna measurements were made using a Hewlett-Packard 8510 automated network analyzer. This system features measurement sensitivity better than -90 dBm, at measurement speeds of one data point per millisecond in the fast data acquisition mode. The system was configured using external, even harmonic mixers and a fiber optic distributed local oscillator signal. Additionally, the time domain capability of the HP8510, made it possible to generate far-field diagnostic results immediately after data acquisition without the use of an external computer

Casino revenue and the Illinois smoking ban

    Get PDF
Smoking was banned in all Illinois casinos in January 2008. We explore the effects that the smoking ban has had on Illinois casino revenue and attendance. Our empirical methodology extends and enhances that of previous literature in that we observe a natural experiment in comparing the performance of Illinois casinos with out-of-state casinos (no smoking ban) that share a market with Illinois casinos. Estimates suggest that revenue and admissions at Illinois casinos declined by more than 20 percent (400million)and12percent,respectively.Calculationsrevealthatcasinotaxrevenuetostateandlocalgovernmentsdeclinedbyapproximately400 million) and 12 percent, respectively. Calculations reveal that casino tax revenue to state and local governments declined by approximately 200 million.Gambling industry ; Tobacco industry ; Illinois

Do Voters Learn from Presidential Election Campaigns?

    Get PDF
Theory: We present a model of voter campaign learning which is based on Bayesian learning models. This model assumes voters are imperfectly informed and that they incorporate new information into their existing perceptions about candidate issue positions in a systematic manner. Hypothesis: Additional information made available to voters about candidate issue positions during the course of a political campaign will lead voters to have more precise perceptions of the issue positions of the candidates involved. Data and Methods: We use panel survey data from the 1976 and 1980 presidential elections, combined with content analyses of the media during these same elections. Our primary analysis is conducted using random effects panel models. Results: We find that during each of these campaigns many voters became better informed about the positions of candidates on many issues and that these changes in voter information are directly related to the information flow during each presidential campaign

e-EVN radio detection of Aql X-1 in outburst

    Get PDF
The neutron star X-ray binary Aql X-1 is currently in outburst. Using the European VLBI Network (e-EVN) we observed Aql X-1 at 5 GHz in two time-slots: 2013 June 18 between 19:48 - 20:36 UT (MJD 56461.825 - 56461.858), and 2013 June 19 between 02:53 - 05:54 UT (MJD 56462.120 - 56462.246). The two datasets were combined together and then calibrated

An outburst of SS 433 observed on milliarcsecond scale

SS 433 is a high-mass X-ray binary system (XRB) and one of the most persistent sources of relativistic jets in the Milky Way. The object has been intensively studied in radio at arcsecond scales, however the high-resolution observations (i.e. VLBI) are relatively scarce. In 2008 November the system was in outburst. Using the e-VLBI capabilities of the European VLBI Network (EVN) we observed SS 433 for three epochs during the active phase. The data offered a detailed view of the system’s behaviour in outburst at milliarcsecond scales. We used the “kinematic model" (which predicts the position along the jet of any knot ejected at some particular time in the past) to investigate the dynamic parameters of SS 433 and we examined the polarization properties of the ejected material. We report here the preliminary results

Government Partisanship, Labor Organization, and Macroeconomic Performance: A Corrigendum

Alvarez, Garrett and Lange (1991) used cross-national data panel data on the Organization for Economic Coordination and Development nations to show that countries with left governments and encompassing labor movements enjoyed superior economic performance. Here we show that the standard errors reported in that article are incorrect. Reestimation of the model using ordinary least squares and robust standard errors upholds the major finding of Alvarez, Garrett and Lange, regarding the political and institutional causes of economic growth but leaves the findings for unemployment and inflation open to question. We show that the model used by Alvarez, Garrett and Lange, feasible generalized least squares, cannot produce standard errors when the number of countries analyzed exceeds the length of the time period under analysis. Also, we argue that ordinary least squares with robust standard errors is superior to feasible generalized least square for typical cross-national panel studies
