    Expanding on existing research on women\u27s magazines, this essay examines the sexual etiquette developed in advice columns in magazines popular among teenage women. Over a span of 20 years, the advice has changed very little. Serving the rhetorical function of field guides and training manuals, teen magazines limit women\u27s sociality and sexuality within narrowly defined heterosexual norms and practices. The rhetoric of sexual etiquette encourages young women to be sex objects and teachers of interpersonal communication rather than lovers, friends, and partners.     Interactome comparison of human embryonic stem cell lines with the inner cell mass and trophectoderm

    Networks of interacting co-regulated genes distinguish the inner cell mass (ICM) from the differentiated trophectoderm (TE) in the preimplantation blastocyst, in a species specific manner. In mouse the ground state pluripotency of the ICM appears to be maintained in murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from the ICM. This is not the case for human ESCs. In order to gain insight into this phenomenon, we have used quantitative network analysis to identify how similar human (h)ESCs are to the human ICM. Using the hESC lines MAN1, HUES3 and HUES7 we have shown that all have only a limited overlap with ICM specific gene expression, but that this overlap is enriched for network properties that correspond to key aspects of function including transcription factor activity and the hierarchy of network modules. These analyses provide an important framework which highlights the developmental origins of hESCs

    Promoting childbirth companions in South Africa: a randomised pilot study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most women delivering in South African State Maternity Hospitals do not have a childbirth companion; in addition, the quality of care could be better, and at times women are treated inhumanely. We piloted a multi-faceted intervention to encourage uptake of childbirth companions in state hospitals, and hypothesised that lay carers would improve the behaviour of health professionals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial of an intervention to promote childbirth companions in hospital deliveries. We promoted evidence-based information for maternity staff at 10 hospitals through access to the World Health Organization Reproductive Health Library (RHL), computer hardware and training to all ten hospitals. We surveyed 200 women at each site, measuring companionship, and indicators of good obstetric practice and humanity of care. Five hospitals were then randomly allocated to receive an educational intervention to promote childbirth companions, and we surveyed all hospitals again at eight months through a repeat survey of postnatal women. Changes in median values between intervention and control hospitals were examined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>At baseline, the majority of hospitals did not allow a companion, or access to food or fluids. A third of women were given an episiotomy. Some women were shouted at (17.7%, N = 2085), and a few reported being slapped or struck (4.3%, N = 2080). Despite an initial positive response from staff to the childbirth companion intervention, we detected no difference between intervention and control hospitals in relation to whether a companion was allowed by nursing staff, good obstetric practice or humanity of care.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The quality and humanity of care in these state hospitals needs to improve. Introducing childbirth companions was more difficult than we anticipated, particularly in under-resourced health care systems with frequent staff changes. We were unable to determine whether the presence of a lay carer impacted on the humanity of care provided by health professionals. </p> <p><b>Trial registration</b>: Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN33728802</p

    The Care Programme Approach and the end of indefinitely renewable Leave of Absence in Scotland

    ObjectiveTo consider the relationship between the restriction of leave of absence (LOA) to 12 months, the introduction of community care orders (CCOs) and the implementation of the Care Programme Approach (CPA).DesignMultiple methods were employed: scrutiny of Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland (MWC) records; questionnaire to consultant psychiatrists and mental health officers (MHOs) regarding attitudes; survey of psychiatrists in respect of outcomes for named patients.SettingScotlandSubjectsTwo hundred and sixty six patients who were affected by the changes introduced by the Mental Health (Patients in the Community) Act 1995.ResultsInformation was available for 195 (73%) patients in relation to CPA. Of these 113 (58%) were included on CPA and for 63/113 (56%) (63/195 (32%)) CPA was considered to have enhanced patient care.Where CPA was considered useful it was because it was seen as bringing people together, enhancing the patient’s role in treatment and managing difficult situations. Negative comments regarding CPA were that it was unnecessary as the patient’s needs were straightforward, it duplicated current practices or it was too bureaucratic.ConclusionsDespite concerns expressed by professionals about the restriction to LOA and the guidance that patients should be on CPA, for only a minority of patients was CPA described as enhancing care. Questions are raised about the low use of CCOs and CPA by psychiatrists for patients who reached the new limits of LOA

    Examining individual and ecological predictors of the self-determination of students with disabilities

Baseline data from a multistate, longitudinal research project evaluating interventions to promote self determination were examined using structural equation modeling. The findings suggest that teachers viewed students' capacity for self-determination differently based on level of cognitive impairment, but not students' opportunities for self-determination. Capacity, opportunity, and transition empowerment predicted students' self-reported level of self-determination, but the degree to which students were included in general education did not. Significant differences emerged in the pattern of predictive relationships, however, depending on the measure of self-determination utilized. Also discussed are implications for research and practice

    Strength in diversity: enhancing learning in vocationally-orientated, master's level courses

    Postgraduate education in geography, especially at the Master’s level, is undergoing significant changes in the developed world. There is an expansion of vocationally-oriented degree programmes, increasing recruitment of international students, integration of work place skills, and the engagement of non-traditional postgraduate students as departments respond to policies for a more ‘inclusive’ higher education. This paper sets the context by outlining some programmatic changes in selected countries (Australia, the UK, and the USA). We briefly reflect on how postgraduate ‘bars’ or ‘levels’ are defined and explore in detail what ‘diversity’ or ‘heterogeneity’ means in these new postgraduate settings. The paper then explores some examples of practice drawn from our own experiences, whilst recognising that relevance will vary in other contexts. Finally we consider how diversity can be harnessed as a strength that has potential to enhance taught elements of contemporary postgraduate education in and beyond the discipline
