    Bounds on Slow Roll at the Boundary of the Landscape

    We present strong evidence that the tree level slow roll bounds of arXiv:1807.05193 and arXiv:1810.05506 are valid, even when the tachyon has overlap with the volume of the cycle wrapped by the orientifold. This extends our previous results in the volume-dilaton subspace to a semi-universal modulus. Emboldened by this and other observations, we investigate what it means to have a bound on (generalized) slow roll in a multi-field landscape. We argue that for anyany point ϕ0\phi_0 in an NN-dimensional field space with V(ϕ0)>0V(\phi_0) > 0, there exists a path of monotonically decreasing potential energy to a point ϕ1\phi_1 within a path length O(1)\lesssim {\cal O}(1), such that NlnV(ϕ1)V(ϕ0)O(1)\sqrt{N}\ln \frac{V(\phi_1)}{V(\phi_0)} \lesssim - {\cal O} (1). The previous de Sitter swampland bounds are specific ways to realize this stringent non-local constraint on field space, but we show that it also incorporates (for example) the scenario where both slow roll parameters are intermediate-valued and the Universe undergoes a small number of e-folds, as in the Type IIA set up of arXiv:1310.8300. Our observations are in the context of tree level constructions, so we take the conservative viewpoint that it is a characterization of the classical "boundary" of the string landscape.     Where we stand on structure dependence of ISGMR in the Zr-Mo region: Implications on K_\infty

    Isoscalar giant resonances, being the archetypal forms of collective nuclear behavior, have been studied extensively for decades with the goal of constraining bulk nuclear properties of the equation of state, as well as for modeling dynamical behaviors within stellar environments. An important such mode is the isoscalar electric giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) that can be understood as a radially symmetric density vibration within the saturated nuclear volume. The field has a few key open questions, which have been proposed and remain unresolved. One of the more provocative questions is the extra high-energy strength in the A90A\approx 90 region, which manifested in large percentages of the E0E0 sum rule in 92^{92}Zr and 92^{92}Mo above the main ISGMR peak. The purpose of this article is to introduce these questions within the context of experimental investigations into the phenomena in the zirconium and molybdenum isotopic chains, and to address, via a discussion of previously published and preliminary results, the implications of recent experimental efforts on extraction of the nuclear incompressibility from this data.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, invited to be submitted to a special issue of EPJA honoring Prof. P.     Spin Tunneling in Magnetic Molecules: Quasisingular Perturbations and Discontinuous SU(2) Instantons

    Spin coherent state path integrals with discontinuous semiclassical paths are investigated with special reference to a realistic model for the magnetic degrees of freedom in the Fe8 molecular solid. It is shown that such paths are essential to a proper understanding of the phenomenon of quenched spin tunneling in these molecules. In the Fe8 problem, such paths are shown to arise as soon as a fourth order anisotropy term in the energy is turned on, making this term a singular perturbation from the semiclassical point of view. The instanton approximation is shown to quantitatively explain the magnetic field dependence of the tunnel splitting, as well as agree with general rules for the number of quenching points allowed for a given value of spin. An accurate approximate formula for the spacing between quenching points is derived

    A two-step approach to achieve secondary amide transamidation enabled by nickel catalysis.

    A long-standing challenge in synthetic chemistry is the development of the transamidation reaction. This process, which involves the conversion of one amide to another, is typically plagued by unfavourable kinetic and thermodynamic factors. Although some advances have been made with regard to the transamidation of primary amide substrates, secondary amide transamidation has remained elusive. Here we present a simple two-step approach that allows for the elusive overall transformation to take place using non-precious metal catalysis. The methodology proceeds under exceptionally mild reaction conditions and is tolerant of amino-acid-derived nucleophiles. In addition to overcoming the classic problem of secondary amide transamidation, our studies expand the growing repertoire of new transformations mediated by base metal catalysis

    The problem of determining the distribution of stress in a semi – infinite elastic solid when a rigid body of prescribed shape is pressed against its free surface is associated with the name of Boussinesq, since it was first discussed in classical Treatise [1]. A detailed account of punch problem may be formed in Sneddon [2] and Green and Zerna [3]. Recently, Shibuya et.al. [4] devised a novel technique for determining stress distribution in elastic half space indented by flat annular punch. Shibuya et.al. [5] also extended this technique  to determine stress distribution in an elastic slab indented by  a pair of flat rigid annular punches. George and Sneddon [6] were first to study the axially symmetric problem of elastic half space indented by heated punch. Keer and Fu [7] also studied the thermo – elastic stress distribution problem due to combined loading of rigid, non– symmetrical, circular punches indenting thick elastic plate.  The axisymmetric Boussinesq problem for heated annular punch was discussed by Kumar and Hiremath [8]. The problem of determining axisymmetric distribution in a thick elastic plate indented by a pair of heated annular punches was also studied by Kumar and Hiremath [9]. The present paper extends the method of Kumar and Hiremath [8, 9] to study the problem of determining stress distribution in a transversely isotropic  half space indented by a heated annular rigid punch. The mixed boundary value problem is reduced to the solution of triple integral equations, which in turn are reduced to the solution of linear simultaneous algebraic equations.     Humoral and cytokine response elicited during immunisation with recombinant Immune Mapped protein-1 (EtIMP-1) and oocysts of Eimeria tenella

    Eimeria tenella, the causative agent of caecal coccidiosis, is a pathogenic gut dwelling protozoan which can cause severe morbidity and mortality in farmed chickens. Immune mapped protein-1 (IMP-1) has been identified as an anticoccidial vaccine candidate; in the present study allelic polymorphism was assessed across the IMP-1 coding sequence in E. tenella isolates from four countries and compared with the UK reference Houghton strain. Nucleotide diversity was low, limited to expansion/contraction of a CAG triplet repeat and five substitutions, three of which were non-synonymous. The EtIMP-1 coding sequence from a cloned Indian E. tenella isolate was expressed in E. coli and purified as a His-tagged thioredoxin fusion protein. An in-vivo vaccination and challenge trial was conducted to test the vaccine potential of recombinant EtIMP-1 (rEtIMP-1) and to compare post-vaccination immune responses of chickens to those stimulated by live oocyst infection. Following challenge, parasite replication measured using quantitative PCR was significantly reduced in chickens that had been vaccinated with rEtIMP-1 (rIC group; 67% reduction compared to UC or unimmunised controls; 79% reduction compared to rTC group or recombinant thioredoxin mock-immunised controls, p < 0.05), or the birds vaccinated by infection with oocysts (OC group, 90% compared to unimmunised controls). Chickens vaccinated with oocysts (OC) had significantly higher levels of interferon gamma in their serum post-challenge, compared to rEtIMP-1 vaccinated birds (rIC). Conversely rEtIMP-1 (rIC) vaccinated birds had significantly higher antigen specific serum IgY responses, correlating with higher serum IL-4 (both p < 0.05)

    Approximating the {Nash} Social Welfare with Budget-Additive Valuations

    We present the first constant-factor approximation algorithm for maximizing the Nash social welfare when allocating indivisible items to agents with budget-additive valuation functions. Budget-additive valuations represent an important class of submodular functions. They have attracted a lot of research interest in recent years due to many interesting applications. For every ε>0\varepsilon > 0, our algorithm obtains a (2.404+ε)(2.404 + \varepsilon)-approximation in time polynomial in the input size and 1/ε1/\varepsilon. Our algorithm relies on rounding an approximate equilibrium in a linear Fisher market where sellers have earning limits (upper bounds on the amount of money they want to earn) and buyers have utility limits (upper bounds on the amount of utility they want to achieve). In contrast to markets with either earning or utility limits, these markets have not been studied before. They turn out to have fundamentally different properties. Although the existence of equilibria is not guaranteed, we show that the market instances arising from the Nash social welfare problem always have an equilibrium. Further, we show that the set of equilibria is not convex, answering a question of [Cole et al, EC 2017]. We design an FPTAS to compute an approximate equilibrium, a result that may be of independent interest
