A Second Language Acquisition Toolkit for Teaching Introduction to Computing
Introduction to Computing and higher-level programming
courses are common first-year engineering curricula at the
university level and are key in developing logical thought
processes in engineering students. Recent research has shown
that employing second language acquisition (SLA) techniques
to teach programming increases exam performance and student
motivation compared to more classical approaches. However,
the presentation of pedagogical techniques has been largely
limited to higher-level languages with more intuitive linguistic
analogs and has not been extended to lower-level computing
course material. In this paper we present several SLA
techniques and their analogs in a computing course setting and
the results of implementing an SLA strategy in a first-year
engineering course. Statistical analysis shows that students
taught with SLA methods completed quizzes more quickly,
enjoyed recitation more, and had a higher perceived value of
the class when compared with students taught with non-SLA

Interior noise prediction methodology: ATDAC theory and validation
The Acoustical Theory for Design of Aircraft Cabins (ATDAC) is a computer program developed to predict interior noise levels inside aircraft and to evaluate the effects of different aircraft configurations on the aircraft acoustical environment. The primary motivation for development of this program is the special interior noise problems associated with advanced turboprop (ATP) aircraft where there is a tonal, low frequency noise problem. Prediction of interior noise levels requires knowledge of the energy sources, the transmission paths, and the relationship between the energy variable and the sound pressure level. The energy sources include engine noise, both airborne and structure-borne; turbulent boundary layer noise; and interior noise sources such as air conditioner noise and auxiliary power unit noise. Since propeller and engine noise prediction programs are widely available, they are not included in ATDAC. Airborne engine noise from any prediction or measurement may be input to this program. Atmospheric refraction effects on baseline error in satellite laser ranging systems
Because of the mathematical complexities involved in exact analyses of baseline errors, it is not easy to isolate atmospheric refraction effects; however, by making certain simplifying assumptions about the ranging system geometry, relatively simple expressions can be derived which relate the baseline errors directly to the refraction errors. The results indicate that even in the absence of other errors, the baseline error for intercontinental baselines can be more than an order of magnitude larger than the refraction error
Weibel Instabilities in Dense Quantum Plasmas
The quantum effect on the Weibel instability in an unmagnetized plasma is
presented. Our analysis shows that the quantum effect tends to stabilize the
Weibel instability in the hydrodynamic regime, whereas it produces a new
oscillatory instability in the kinetic regime. A novel effect the quantum
damping, which is associated with the Landau damping, is disclosed. The new
quantum Weibel instability may be responsible for the generation of
non-stationary magnetic fields in compact astrophysical objects as well as in
the forthcoming intense laser-solid density plasma experiments.Comment: Submitted to PR
Electrostatic forces for personnel restraints
The feasibility of utilizing electrostatic forces for personnel retention devices on exterior spacecraft surfaces was analyzed. The investigation covered: (1) determination of the state of the art; (2) analysis of potential adhesion surfaces; (3) safety considerations for personnel; (4) electromagnetic force field determination and its effect on spacecraft instrumentation; and (5) proposed advances to current technology based on documentation review, analyses, and experimental test data
Analysis of short pulse laser altimetry data obtained over horizontal path
Recent pulsed measurements of atmospheric delay obtained by ranging to the more realistic targets including a simulated ocean target and an extended plate target are discussed. These measurements are used to estimate the expected timing accuracy of a correlation receiver system. The experimental work was conducted using a pulsed two color laser altimeter
Meditations on Helping
While writing my dissertation there were many moments of writer’s block. During one, I wrote about the scene outside my window. It became a metaphor for my thesis: that reflecting on our actions and the stories we tell ourselves can help us be better educators, counselors, and human beings. The dissertation, titled--Living a Life Beyond Fear: A Narrative Exploration of College Career Counseling and Student Affairs Professional Preparation, is currently being reviewed by my faculty committee
