    Bacteria classification using Cyranose 320 electronic nose

    Background An electronic nose (e-nose), the Cyrano Sciences' Cyranose 320, comprising an array of thirty-two polymer carbon black composite sensors has been used to identify six species of bacteria responsible for eye infections when present at a range of concentrations in saline solutions. Readings were taken from the headspace of the samples by manually introducing the portable e-nose system into a sterile glass containing a fixed volume of bacteria in suspension. Gathered data were a very complex mixture of different chemical compounds. Method Linear Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method was able to classify four classes of bacteria out of six classes though in reality other two classes were not better evident from PCA analysis and we got 74% classification accuracy from PCA. An innovative data clustering approach was investigated for these bacteria data by combining the 3-dimensional scatter plot, Fuzzy C Means (FCM) and Self Organizing Map (SOM) network. Using these three data clustering algorithms simultaneously better 'classification' of six eye bacteria classes were represented. Then three supervised classifiers, namely Multi Layer Perceptron (MLP), Probabilistic Neural network (PNN) and Radial basis function network (RBF), were used to classify the six bacteria classes. Results A [6 × 1] SOM network gave 96% accuracy for bacteria classification which was best accuracy. A comparative evaluation of the classifiers was conducted for this application. The best results suggest that we are able to predict six classes of bacteria with up to 98% accuracy with the application of the RBF network. Conclusion This type of bacteria data analysis and feature extraction is very difficult. But we can conclude that this combined use of three nonlinear methods can solve the feature extraction problem with very complex data and enhance the performance of Cyranose 320

It has a wide dynamic range and an accurate square law response. Other desirable characteristics, which are all included in a single compact unit, are: (1) high-level dc output with immunity to ground loop problems; (2) fast response times; (3) ability to insert known time constants; and (4) good thermal stability. The detector and its performance are described in detail. The detector can be operated in a programmable system with a ten-fold increase in accuracy. The use and performance of the detector in a noise-adding radiometer system is also discussed

    ‘My journey through the system’: a grounded theory of service user-perceived experiences of recovery in forensic mental health services

    The ‘Recovery Approach’ is widely regarded as the guiding principle for mentalhealth service delivery in the UK. Forensic services face unique challenges in applying this approach. Numerous studies have explored themes associated with recovery in these settings but it is unclear how themes relate to each other. This study set out to build a theoretical model of service user experiences of recovery in forensic mental health settings. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 service users about their recovery. Grounded Theory methodology, with a constructivist epistemology, was used to analyse the data. A cyclical model was developed, with five-core recovery processes that interrelated; these were the environment, connectedness, hope for the future, who I am and empowerment. These occurred in three phases of 1) feeling safe and secure, 2) moving forward, and 3) empowerment. These processes were encompassed by two additional themes of arriving at the hospital and changes over time. This study is the first to provide a clear model of service user experiences of recovery in this setting

    The series Trees of Western Australia, which appeared in The Journal of Agriculture of Western Australia, was commenced in 1952 by Charles Austin Gardner, Government Botanist and Curator of the Western Australian Herbarium from 1929 to1960. Until his death in 1970 Gardner published in the series 29 articles, dealing with 117 species of Eucalyptus, the last article appearing in 1966. The articles are of historical and scientific interest. They contain valuable original information on the phytogeography and taxonomy of over half of the Western Australian species of Eucalyptus, based largely on Gardner\u27s personal observations made in the course of his extensive travels in Western Australia.
