Low Earth Orbit satellite/terrestrial mobile service compatibility
Currently the geostationary type of satellite is the only one used to provide commercial mobile-satellite communication services. Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite systems are now being proposed as a future alternative. By the implementation of LEO satellite systems, predicted at between 5 and 8 years time, mobile space/terrestrial technology will have progressed to the third generation stage of development. This paper considers the system issues that will need to be addressed when developing a dual mode terminal, enabling access to both terrestrial and LEO satellite systems
Effect of water-to-feed ratio on feed disappearance, growth rate, feed efficiency, and carcass traits in growing-finishing pigs
peer-reviewedThe optimum proportion of water for preparing liquid feed to maximize growth and optimize feed efficiency (FE) in growing-finishing pigs is not known. The aim of the current study was, using an automatic short-trough sensor liquid feeding system, to identify the water-to-feed ratio at which growth was maximized and feed was most efficiently converted to live-weight. Two experiments were conducted in which four commercially used water-to-feed ratios were fed: 2.4:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1, and 4.1:1 on a dry matter (DM) basis (the equivalent of 2:1, 2.5:1, 3.0:1, and 3.5:1 on a fresh matter basis). Each experiment comprised 216 pigs, penned in groups of 6 same sex (entire male and female) pigs/pen with a total of 9 pen replicates per treatment. The first experiment lasted 62 days (from 40.6 to 102.2 kg at slaughter) and the second experiment was for 76 days (from 31.8 to 119.6 kg at slaughter). Overall, in Exp. 1, FE was 0.421, 0.420, 0.453, and 0.448 (s.e. 0.0081 g/g; P < 0.01) for pigs fed at 2.4:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1, and 4.1:1, respectively. Overall, in Exp. 2, average daily gain was 1,233, 1,206, 1,211, and 1,177 (s.e. 12.7 g/day; P < 0.05) for pigs fed at 2.4:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1, and 4.1:1, respectively. At slaughter, in Exp. 1, dressing percentage was 76.7, 76.6, 76.7, and 75.8 (s.e. 0.17%; P < 0.01) for 2.4:1, 3.0:1, 3.5:1, and 4.1:1, respectively. There were no differences between treatment groups for DM, organic matter, nitrogen, gross energy, or ash digestibilities. These findings indicate that liquid feeding a diet prepared at a water-to-feed ratio of 3.5:1 maximizes FE of growing-finishing pigs without negatively affecting dressing percentage. Therefore, preparing liquid feed for growing-finishing pigs at a water-to-feed ratio of 3.5:1 DM is our recommendation for a short-trough liquid feeding system
Athena: A New Code for Astrophysical MHD
A new code for astrophysical magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is described. The
code has been designed to be easily extensible for use with static and adaptive
mesh refinement. It combines higher-order Godunov methods with the constrained
transport (CT) technique to enforce the divergence-free constraint on the
magnetic field. Discretization is based on cell-centered volume-averages for
mass, momentum, and energy, and face-centered area-averages for the magnetic
field. Novel features of the algorithm include (1) a consistent framework for
computing the time- and edge-averaged electric fields used by CT to evolve the
magnetic field from the time- and area-averaged Godunov fluxes, (2) the
extension to MHD of spatial reconstruction schemes that involve a
dimensionally-split time advance, and (3) the extension to MHD of two different
dimensionally-unsplit integration methods. Implementation of the algorithm in
both C and Fortran95 is detailed, including strategies for parallelization
using domain decomposition. Results from a test suite which includes problems
in one-, two-, and three-dimensions for both hydrodynamics and MHD are given,
not only to demonstrate the fidelity of the algorithms, but also to enable
comparisons to other methods. The source code is freely available for download

Master equation for collective spontaneous emission with quantized atomic motion
We derive a markovian master equation for the internal dynamics of an
ensemble of two-level atoms including all effects related to the quantization
of their motion. Our equation provides a unifying picture of the consequences
of recoil and indistinguishability of atoms beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime on
both their dissipative and conservative dynamics, and applies equally well to
distinguishable and indistinguishable atoms. We give general expressions for
the decay rates and the dipole-dipole shifts for any motional states, and we
find closed-form formulas for a number of relevant states (Gaussian states,
Fock states and thermal states). In particular, we show that dipole-dipole
interactions and cooperative photon emission can be modulated through the

Synthesis, Crystallographic Characterization and Density Functional Study of Novel Spoke-Molecular Tetravent ethyltriphenylphosphorous Dibromide
A novel molecular tetravent ethyltriphenylphosphorous dibromide ((C6H5) 3PCH2Br2) has been synthesized in toluene and has been characterized by single crystal x-ray crystallography. Theoretical studies have been conducted utilizing DFT (B3LYP/6-311+ G (d, p) level of theory both in gas phase and solution using diverse solvents. Potential surface energy calculations revealed the existence of the tetravelent diionic form as a global minimum except in dimethylsolfoxide where our adduct is more stable. Calculations showed that the Br-Br bond distance is in quadratic variation with the medium dielectric constant. The unusual Br-Br lengthen is reasonably rationalized in terms of charge transfer of electron density from the π clouds in phenyl moieties to the σ* of the dibromine entity. The average harmonic oscillator index of aromaticity of the complex are found suffering a deviation from unity
Surveillance Data Highlights Feed Form, Biosecurity, and Disease Control as Significant Factors Associated with Salmonella Infection on Farrow-to-Finish Pig Farms

No use, distribution or reproduction is permitted which does not comply with these terms.[EN] Among the zoonotic pathogens affecting pigs, Salmonella stands out due to the high number of human cases linked to pork consumption. In the last two decades many countries have put considerable effort into the control of the infection by surveillance and control strategies on farm. Despite this effort, many herds still have a high Salmonella prevalence and they require guidance to address this problem. The present study, using the serological surveillance data of finishing pigs from the Irish National pig Salmonella Control Programme, aimed to highlight factors associated with increased risk or that might mitigate Salmonella occurrence on farm. A questionnaire with 33 questions regarding herd characteristics, management, feeding, biosecurity, and health was completed for 61 individual herds. After the multivariate analysis by linear regression, nine variables were retained in the final model and linked to herd seroprevalence. Home produced-feed linked to the use of meal showed an eight points reduction in Salmonella prevalence compared to purchased feed (p = 0.042). Different biosecurity measures were associated to lower seroprevalence. Changing of footwear from outside to inside the farm decreased seroprevalence nearly 20 units (p = 0.014) and policies not permitting access to the farmyard to feed trucks (p = 0.048) or avoiding the presence of cats on the farm (p = 0.05) were estimated in 10 units less of seroprevalence. In contrast, the lack of perimeter fence increased the chance to have higher seroprevalence in five units (p = 0.05). Finally, intestinal diseases such as swine dysentery (p = 0.044) and E. coli diarrhea (p = 0.1) were estimated to increase Salmonella prevalence in ~20 and 10 units, respectively, demonstrating the importance of controlling other enteric pathogens in an on-farm Salmonella control programme. Effect of Raw and Extruded Propionic Acid-Treated Field Beans on Energy and Crude Protein Digestibility (In-Vitro and In-Vivo), Growth and Carcass Quality in Grow-Finisher Pigs
The in-vitro ileal digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), and crude protein (CP) of field beans treated with propionic acid (trFB) and extruded trFB (exFB) was determined in experiment 1. The DE and dCP values of trFB and exFB were determined using the difference method in experiment 2. The effect of replacing SBM with trFB and exFB in grow-finisher diets on growth, carcass quality, apparent ileal digestibility (AiD), and total tract digestibility (ATTD) of DM, OM, gross energy (GE), and CP were investigated in experiment 3. Evolutionary Status of Dwarf ``Transition'' Galaxies
We present deep B, R and Halpha imaging of 3 dwarf galaxies: NGC3377A,
NGC4286, and IC3475. Based on previous broadband imaging and HI studies, these
mixed-morphology galaxies were proposed by Sandage & Hoffman (1991) to be,
respectively, a gas-rich low surface brightness Im dwarf, a nucleated dwarf
that has lost most of its gas and is in transition from Im to dS0,N, and the
prototypical example of a gas-poor ``huge low surface brightness'' early-type
galaxy. From the combination of our broadband and Halpha imaging with the
published information on the neutral gas content of these three galaxies, we
find that (1) NGC3377A is a dwarf spiral; (2) NGC3377A and NGC4286 have
comparable amounts of ongoing star formation, as indicated by their Halpha
emission, while IC3475 has no detected HII regions to a very low limit; (3) the
global star formation rates are at least a factor of 20 below that of 30
Doradus for NGC3377A and NGC4286; (4) while the amount of star formation is
comparable, the distribution of star forming regions is very different between
NGC3377A and NGC4286; (5) given their current star formation rates and gas
contents, both NGC3377A and NGC4286 can continue to form stars for more than a
Hubble time; (6) both NGC3377A and NGC4286 have integrated total B-R colors
that are redder than the integrated total B-R color for IC3475, and thus it is
unlikely that either galaxy will ever evolve into an IC3475 counterpart; and
(7) IC3475 is too blue to be a dE. We thus conclude that we have not identified
potential precursors to galaxies such as IC3475, and unless signifcant changes
occur in the star formation rates, neither NGC3377A nor NGC4286 will evolve

Resonance fluorescence in a band gap material: Direct numerical simulation of non-Markovian evolution
A numerical method of calculating the non-Markovian evolution of a driven
atom radiating into a structured continuum is developed. The formal solution
for the atomic reduced density matrix is written as a Markovian algorithm by
introducing a set of additional, virtual density matrices which follow, to the
level of approximation of the algorithm, all the possible trajectories of the
photons in the electromagnetic field. The technique is perturbative in the
sense that more virtual density matrices are required as the product of the
effective memory time and the effective coupling strength become larger. The
number of density matrices required is given by where is the number
of timesteps per memory time. The technique is applied to the problem of a
driven two-level atom radiating close to a photonic band gap and the
